MISENHEIMER— The only really memorable thing about Pfeiffer’s 58-45 CVAC women’s basketball victory over Coker on Saturday night was that the visiting Cobras forgot their uniforms and had to borrow the Falcons’ black road apparel.
“Coker looked good,” said Pfeiffer coach Angie Morton, “because our uniforms are nice. Ours are a lot prettier than theirs.”
Ordinarily, third-place Pfeiffer (9-7, 8-4) also plays much prettier basketball than the last-place Cobras, who are slithering along at 0-12, 0-9. Unfortunately, the Falcons played down to the level of the competition and were fortunate to win.
“I was real disappointed because now we’ve played bad two games in a row,” said Morton. “Thursday’s game (a surprising home loss to Barton) should have been a wake-up call. But we still didn’t wake up. We were way too relaxed out there — like we expected to just walk in here and blow Coker out.”
Morton was concerned that her gold-clad squad might accidentally throw the ball to those strange ladies wearing black Pfeiffer jerseys. The Falcons didn’t do that very often, but they did throw it off the walls and into the stands and off one another’s feet and knees at an alarming pace. Pfeiffer made 24 turnovers, just one less than the careless Cobras.
Still, Pfeiffer cruised to a 35-18 halftime lead with its South Caldwell High combination of Amanda Joplin and Shannon Reid dominating. Center Joplin made all five of her field goal tries in the first half, while guard Reid shot 5-for-6, including three 3-pointers. Together, the duo outscored Coker 23-18.
But in the early moments of the second half, Pfeiffer had some really ugly possessions, turning the ball over repeatedly as the Cobras scored six quick points to get within 11.
“Their press wasn’t a very good press, but anytime they put the least amount of pressure on us, we crumbled,” said Morton. “It’s not like we don’t work on on the press every day. That got me upset.”
Fortunately, the Falcons got it back together. Jess Wilber made a big shot from the corner to end a four-minute Pfeiffer drought and stop Coker’s run. Then Amie Williams hit Emily Goad for a layup to push the lead back to 15. The danger of a real disaster had passed.
Still the Falcons know they were lucky. “They jumped on us,” said Pfeiffer guard Brooke Misenheimer, who handled the ball late. “That team didn’t have anything to lose.”
Now the Falcons have a chance to lose a few pounds of complacency. Morton promised a tough practice this afternoon.
