Larry Wilson Caraway

KANNAPOLIS — Larry Wilson Caraway, 53, 505 Cook St., died Thursday (Jan. 25, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born on July 11, 1947, in Cabarrus County, he was the son of the late Wilson Hazel “Doc” and Ethel Clayton Caraway.

Retired due to disability, he had previously worked at Metrolina Greenhouses, Home Depot and Wal-Mart. Mr. Caraway was a member of Midway United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Absher Caraway; a daughter, Christina Michelle Caraway, of the home; and a brother, Ricky Caraway, Kannapolis.

Services: 3:30 p.m. today at Whitley’s Funeral Home, with the Rev. William Rintz officiating. Burial in Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

Marianne Cushman

Marianne McNeeve Cushman, 40, 5187 Old Concord Road, died Friday (Jan. 26, 2001) at Rowan RegionalMedical Center after an illness of 18 months.

Born Jan. 25, 1961, in Cincinnati, she was a daughter of Arthur McNeeve, Plantation, Fla., and the late Shirley Buckewicz McNeeve. Educated in the Florida schools, she was office manager with Action Recovery Service. She was a member of Main Street Baptist Church in China Grove.

Survivors include her husband, Daniel Preston Cushman; a daughter, Rebekah Cushman, of the home; and a brother, Colin Stewart of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Main Street Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Larry Beaver. Entombment at West Lawn Mausoleum.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Emma Irene Giles

LEXINGTON — Emma Irene Giles, 60, 1460 Giles Road, died Thursday (Jan. 25, 2001) at her home.

Born April 24, 1940, in Davidson County, Mrs. Giles was a daughter of the late Walter Jefferson and Ruth Leonard Giles. An Edgewood employee for more than 25 years, she was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Lutheran Church Women.

Survivors include sister Frances Copple, Efland; and brothers Billy C. Giles and Dermont Giles, both of Lexington, Bobby Giles, Randleman, and Alfred Giles, Asheboro.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev.Donald Phillips. Burial, Sandy Creek Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Giles Road.

Kenneth Bruce Keeter

MIAMI — Kenneth Bruce Keeter, 50, 8362 N.E. Fourth Place, died Sunday (Jan. 21, 2001) at NorthShore Medical Center.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the arboretum at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis, N.C.

Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, N.C., is handling arrangements.

 

Ralph R. McLeod

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Sunday for Ralph R. McLeod, 83, 405 Helen St., who died Thursday (Jan. 25, 2001) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, after four years of declining health.

Born April 11, 1917, in Alexander County, Mr. McLeod was the son of the late Richard Brown McLeod, Molly Rebecca Johnson McLeod and Ada Watts McLeod.

He had retired in 1979 from Western &Southern Life Insur-ance Co. A member of Trinity United Methodist Church, he was active with the Bullock Bible Class. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Allen-Graham Masonic Lodge 659.

His wife of 59 years, Agnes Rainey McLeod, died Dec. 20, 2000.

Survivors include daughters Rebecca Fisher, Vienna, Va., and Cathy Linn, Tega Cay, S.C.; son Kevin McLeod, Charlotte; brothers Brian McLeod, Webberville, Mich., and John McLeod, Taylorsville; sister Elma Price, Taylorsville; and seven grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday,Trinity United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Don Shuman, the Rev.Pat Purdy and Sarah Weaver. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home onHelen Street.

‘Sunnie’ Openlander

LARGO, Fla. — Adeline “Sunnie” E. Openlander, 75, Largo, died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 2001).

Born in Craven County, N.C., she had lived in Largo since 1978. Prior to that she had been a sales manager for J.C. Penney Co. in St. Louis. She was a member of the Morton Plant Hospital Women’s Auxiliary.

Survivors include a son, Skip Bailey of Largo; a daughter, Susan Odom, Largo; a stepson, Robert Openlander, St. Louis; sisters Ruth R. Miller, Eva Williams and Alice Fields, all of Salisbury, N.C.; two granddaughters; and a great-grandson.

National Cremation Society, Clearwater, is in charge.

 

Dennis Earle Phelps

Dennis Earle Phelps, 42, Salisbury, died Friday (Jan. 26, 2001) at the Hefner VA Medical Center.

Summersett Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

 

Cordia Stallings Powers

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Sunday for Cordia Stallings Childress Powers, 104, who died Thursday (Jan. 25, 2001) at Big Elm Retirement Center after a short illness.

Born May 2, 1896, in Buncombe County, Mrs. Powers was a daughter of the late John Henderson and Mittie Steep Stallings. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, J.E. Powers, died in 1960. A son, James Childress, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Carl Childress, Concord, Raymond Childress, Kannapolis, and William “Buddy”Childress, Salisbury; daughter Helen C. Stutts, Mooresville; 16 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and 36 great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev.Richard Pethel. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter-in-law Lucille C. Jenkins, 913 Circle St.

Mary Lee Fish Reid

MOORESVILLE — Mary Lee Fish Reid, 83, Mooresville, died Friday (Jan. 26, 2001) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born in Iredell County on Feb. 6, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Bessie Alley Fish. She last worked at Bridgeport Fabrics in Davidson. She was a member of Williamson’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Franklin Reid.

Survivors include sons Harold “Buddy” Reid, David L. Reid and Danny Reid, all of Mooresville; a brother, John Fish, Mooresville; sisters Annie Ruth Little, Cornelius, and Pearl Cunnup, Davidson; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Williamson’s Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. W. Lyn Sorrells and the Rev. Dr. Paul E. Childers officiating. Burial in church cemetery.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.

Charles L. Ridenhour

Charles Luther Ridenhour, 71, Salisbury, a volunteer fireman for more than 40 years, died Friday (Jan. 26, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after six months of declining health.

Born on July 19, 1929, in Iredell County, he was a son of the late Elsie Poteat and Luther Graham Ridenhour. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he owned and operated Ridenhour Grocery Store from 1955 to 1972 and Ridenhour Pump and Electric from 1964 to 1995.

A veteran of the Korean War, Ridenhour served with the 82nd Airborne Division. He retired as a first sergeant with the N.C. National Guard after 28 years of service in 1989.

He was a charter member of the Ellis Cross Country Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of the Rowan County Rescue Squad, where he was Rookie of the Year in 1994 and Officer of the Year in 1995.

Firefighter of the Year for Ellis Cross Country in 1993 and 1994, he was also Firefighter of the Year for the Rowan County Fire and Rescue Association in 1994. He was an EMT-I with Rowan County Emergency Medical Services.

Mr. Ridenhour served as secretary/treasurer of the Spencer Optimist Club from 1991 to 1993. He was a member of Harold B.Jarrett American Legion Post 342 and Veterans of Foreign War Post 3070. He was a life member of the National Ranger Association.

He was also a member of Maupin Avenue Associate Reform Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon.

Survivors include his wife, Lenora Porter Ridenhour, whom he married June 21, 1953; a son, Charles Luther “Chuck” Ridenhour Jr., Largo, Fla.; a daughter, Laurie R. Helms, Salisbury; and four grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Sunday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Fred Crisco, pastor of Maupin Avenue Associate Reform Presbyterian Church, and the Rev.Paul Crisco. Burial in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, with military graveside honors conducted by the Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 tonight at Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Memorials: Rowan County Rescue Squad, 1140 Julian Road, Salisbury, NC 28146.

 

Ethelda Wiseman

KANNAPOLIS — Ethelda Lineberger Wiseman, 92, Williams Street, , died Friday ( Jan. 26, 2001) at Five Oaks Nursing Center in Concord.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.
