David ‘Buddy’ Atwell Jr.

David Alexander “Buddy” Atwell Jr., 68, Belt, Mont., a Salisbury native, died Thursday (Jan. 25, 2001) at Great Falls Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Born May 20, 1932, Mr. Atwell was a son of the late Pearl Henderson and David Alexander Atwell. He attended Boyden High School. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW and a championship pool player.

His wife Shirley Mae Anderson Atwell died in 1998.

Survivors include daughter Pam Buckley, Missoula, Mont., and Patti Jacques, Helena, Mont.; son Gary Atwell, Great Falls, Mont.; sisters Becky Wellhouse, Stafford, Va., Virginia Brown, Miami, Fla., and Elizabeth Gushue, Salisbury; and four grandchildren.

Services: 11:15 a.m. Monday, O’Connor Funeral Home Chapel, Great Falls, Mont. Burial at Highland Cemetery, Great Falls, Mont., with military honors.

Memorials: Donor’s choice.

 

Gladys L. Brooks

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Gladys L.Brooks, 75, 102 S. Rose Ave., who died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 2001) at her home.

Born April 23, 1925, in Chesterfield County, S.C., Mrs. Brooks was a daughter of the late Samuel H. and Maude Hancock Lisenby. She retired from Cannon Mills plant 1 No. 6 weave room after 43 years.

A member of Central Baptist Church and Grace Morning Circle, she was active in the senior citizens program. She was a charter member of the Kannapolis CBClub.

Her husband, Dewey Teal Brooks, died Nov. 1, 1998.

Survivors include daughters Dianne B. Shoe, China Grove, and Kaye B. Hunter, Salisbury; sister Dorothy Foust, Cheraw, S.C.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, CentralBaptist Church, conducted by the Rev.Curtis Parker and the Rev.Dean Hunter. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on South Rose Avenue.

Larry Wilson Caraway

KANNAPOLIS — Larry Wilson Caraway, 53, 505 Cook St., died Thursday (Jan. 25, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Eugene Hope Earnhardt

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Eugene Hope “Buddy” Earnhardt, 40, 1575 Dale Earnhardt Blvd., who died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Feb. 7, 1960, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Earnhardt was a son of the late Hope and Jean Wike Earnhardt. He attended Northwest Cabarrus High School and graduated from A.L. Brown High School.

Survivors include fiancee Heather Alexander,Kannapolis.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Saturday, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Billy Huneycutt.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of an aunt, Kay Morris, 875 Crestmont Drive, Concord.

Maude McKinney Fisher

The funeral will be Monday for Maude McKinney Fisher, 93, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 2001) at Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks after a period of declining health.

Born May 5, 1907, in Rowan County, Mrs. Fisher was a son of the late Fred G. and Margaret Fleming Mc-Kinney. She was educated in the Rowan County schools and was a 1928 graduate of Salisbury Hospital Nursing School. She was a homemaker.

A member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the Annie Fink Sunday School Class, she was also a member of Hudson-Miller-Tatum VFW Auxiliary.

Her husband, Marcus Henry Fisher, whom she married April 30, 1929, died May 19, 1982. A grandson also preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughter Margaret Fisher Clifton, Faith; brother Dr. Hugh L. McKinney, Austin, Texas; sister Margaret McKinney Foster, Salisbury; and one grandson.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, St. John’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Carl Sachtleben, pastor, and the Rev. Malcolm Bullock. Burial, Fisher Family Cemetery, Faith.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at their respective homes.

 

Frances Batte Foil

The funeral will be Saturday for Frances Mallory Batte Foil, 91, formerly of 1530 Arbor Drive, who died Thursday (Jan. 25, 2001) at Genesis Health Care Center.

Born Dec. 5, 1909, in Charlotte, Mrs. Foil, a daughter of the late George Albert and Frances Mallory Batte, was a 1926 graduate of Concord High School and a 1930 graduate of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro.

She taught for a year at Davenport College, a Methodist college in Lenoir that later merged with Greensboro College. In 1931, she came to Catawba College, where she was director of physical education for women for six years.

A member of First United Methodist Church, she served on the altar guild for three years and as chairman for one year. She was a member of the Literary Guild Book Club, and a trustee of Rowan Museum for a number of years. She was overall chairman of the annual antique show sponsored by the museum.

Her husband, Everett Linwood Foil, whom she married July 22, 1934, died Feb. 22, 2000.

Survivors include daughters Frances Tatum, Salisbury, and Elizabeth Carter, Concord; brother George A. Batte, Concord; sister Virginia Phillips, Winston-Salem; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 3 p.m. Saturday, Chestnut Hill Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Griffis, pastor, First United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Jim Foil, retired Presbyterian minister.

Visitation: After the service at the home of daughter Frances Tatum, 223 N. McCoy Road.

Louise Myers Goss

LEXINGTON —Louise Myers Goss, 86, E.L. Myers Road, died Thursday (Jan. 25, 2001) at Lexington Memorial Hospital after a year of declining health.

Born June 21, 1914, in Forsyth County, Mrs. Goss was a daughter of the late Ezra Lewis and Ida Louise Craver Myers. A member of Reed’s United Methodist Church, she worked in the Reeds Elementary School cafeteria for 25 years.

Her husband, John Franklin Goss, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Lewis Goss, Lexington; sister Betsy Greer, Lynchburg, Va.; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Reed’s United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. John Gottula. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on E.L.Myers Road.

Carl R. Hughes

LEXINGTON — Carl Revere Hughes, 75, formerly of the Green Needles community, died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 2001) at Centerclair Inc.

Born Oct. 4, 1925, in Delware County, Ohio, Mr. Hughes was a son of the late Miles and Gertrude Craig Hughes. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, he retired from the furniture industry.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virgie Eloise Reebel Hughes, and a son, Steven Hughes.

Survivors include daughter Candy Greene, Lexington; sons Robin Hughes, Freemont, Ohio, Glenn Hughes, Midway, and Terry Hughes, Huntersville; sister Hoama Chappel,Pleasant, Ohio; brother Miles Hughes, Marion,Ohio; 19 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 today, Forest Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel.

Visitation: 2:30 today at the mausoleum chapel. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Candy Greene, 127 Rockcrusher Road.

Nesbit Johnston

MOORESVILLE — Nesbit Johnston, 89, Decatur, Ga., a native of Mooresville, died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 2001) at Highland-Cashiers Hospital, Highland.

Born May 21, 1911, Mr. Johnson was a son of the late Cyrus Robert and Nannie Lee Kerr Nesbit Johnston and a 1932 graduate of Davidson College. He retired as regional marketing manager for Ciba-Geigy after 40 years.

A member of Decatur Presbyterian Church, Decatur,Ga., he was a former member of the Pastor’s Aid and a former president of the Men’s Sunday School Class. He was a member of Atlanta Athletic Club and active in the Quarter Century Club of Ciba-Geigy.

His wife, Elizabeth McKnight Johnston, preceded him in death.

Survivors include children Ann Johnston Scott, Cullowhee, and Robert McKnight Johnston, Atlanta, Ga.; sister Helen Johnston Fridell, Charlotte; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gerald R. Hallman. Burial, Willow Valley Cemetery.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Preston James Livengood

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Preston James Livengood, 91, 1523 Plaza Ave., who died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a month of serious illness.

Born Dec. 12, 1909, in Rowan County, Mr. Livengood was a son of the late Zeb P. and Addie McIntyre Livengood. He retired after 48 years from Cannon Mills Co. A member of Lane Street Church of God, he was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church, China Grove.

Considered the “fix-it” man in China Grove, in his earlier years he worked at Weant’s Texaco,China Grove Glass and China Grove Exxon.

His first wife, Bessie Faggart Livengood, died Dec. 31, 1985; a daughter, Marvie Sloane, died Dec. 13, 1994; and a stepdaughter, Patricia Seagraves, died in 1990.

Survivors include wife Ruby Clarke Livengood; son Donald J.Livengood, Salisbury; stepson Lee David Clarke, Lewiston, Maine; brothers Fletcher Livengood, Kannapolis, and Harry Livengood, Dalton,Ga.; sister Edna Shumaker, Mooresville; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; six step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Wade Easom. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Ralph R. McLeod

KANNAPOLIS — Ralph R. McLeod, 83, 405 Helen St., died Thursday (Jan. 25, 2001) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

LaGrande ‘Lee’ Moskowitz

SPENCER — The funeral will be Saturday for LaGrande Lomax “Lee” Moskowitz, 78, Florida, formerly of Atlanta, Ga., and Spencer, who died Tuesday (Jan. 23, 2001) at Good Shepherd Hospice, Auburndale, Fla.

Born Nov. 12, 1922, in Davidson County, Mrs. Moskowitz, a daughter of the late George W. and Mamie Lanning Lomax, was educated in the Rowan County schools. She operated a dress manufacturing company, B.C. Temple, in New York City for 15 years. She later was employed by Rich’s Department Store, Atlanta, Ga., for 12 years before her retirement.

Survivors include sons David L. Moskowitz, Fairfax, Va., and Daniel L. Moskowitz, Lakeland, Fla.; sister Dorothy Hendricks, Bethune, S.C.; and six grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Summerett Funeral Home Chapel, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. David Alexander. Burial, Oakdale Baptist Church cemetery, Spencer.

Donald Lee Parks

ALBEMARLE — Donald Lee Parks, 27, 44148 Vickers Store Road, died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 2001) at 200 RussellRoad.

Born Jan. 23, 1974, in Baltimore, Md., Mr. Parks was a son of Raymond Lee and Mary Jean Stipe Parks, of the home. He was employed by Danny Russell’s Welding &Sandblasting as a heavy equipment mechanic. He was a member of Dunn’s Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include brother William “Chris” Parks, of the home; and grandmother Hildred Taylor, Star.

Services: 2 today,Dunn’s Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Stephen Jackson. Burial, Norview Gardens, Norwood.

At other times the family will be at the home on Vickers Store Road.

Paul E. Penley

The funeral will be Sunday for Paul E. Penley, 88, formerly of Highway 601, who died Thursday (Jan. 25, 2001) at Spencer Health Care, Spencer.

Born Nov. 10, 1912, in Asheville, Mr. Penley, a son of the late Joe Harrison and Maggie Medecca GosnellPenley, was educated in the Buncombe County schools.

He worked for Cannon Mills plant 7 and then for Southern Railway for 13 years. Later he worked for Fowler Motor Company as a small motor mechanic and detail man until he retired in 1977. He pitched for Cannon Mills No. 7 baseball team and was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals.

His wife, Aline Thomason Penley, died June 3, 1993.

Survivors include sons Paul Terry Penley, Salisbury, and Donald L. Penley, Mount Ulla; daughter Sylvia P. McDaniel, Salisbury; brother Velt Penley, Salisbury; sister Maoma Penley, Salisbury; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Franklin Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev.Larry Summey. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: The family will receive friends after the service.

KANNAPOLIS — Cordia Stallings Childress Powers, 104, Big Elm Retirement Center, died Thursday (Jan. 25, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Charles Luther Ridenhour, 71, Salisbury, died Friday (Jan. 26, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Hovis E. Spurrier

LEXINGTON — Hovis Edgar Spurrier, 79, Oak Avenue, died Wednesday (Jan. 24, 2001) at Brian Center Nursing Home.

Born Dec. 17, 1921, in Davidson County, Mr. Spurrier was a son of the late Hamlet Justice and Martha Tussey Spurrier. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II.

He retired from the North Carolina State Department of Administration. He was a member of VFWPost 3074, American Legion Post 8 and Amvets Post 13.

Survivors include sons Danny Spurrier, Southmont, and Douglas Spurrier, Pilot Mountain; daughter Joni Messer, Lexington; brother Paul Spurrier, Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Davidson Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev.Ted Hendrix and the Rev.Jerry Moore. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.
