While the money for heating has taken the biggest hit, Rowan Helping Ministries is swamped with calls for assistance for food, clothing and shelter.
Pleas for assistance and spending have doubled.
“This is by far the greatest number we have ever served,” said Dianne Scott, director of the agency located at 226 N. Long St.
In 1999, the agency spent just over $149,000 between July 1 and Dec. 31, helping 4,775 people.
In the same six-month period that ended Dec. 31, 2000, the agency spent almost $300,000, helping 6,679.
The numbers do not include the overnight shelter and the soup kitchen.
While the greatest pressure is on for emergency heating funds, Scott said all of the assistance programs are being challenged.
The agency has a budget of $1,047,000 this year, the largest ever.
The budget is likely to be tested with the unexpected downtown in the economy.
Although plant closings and layoffs are a major factor, Scott said that in many cases people are “underemployed.” In some cases, both parents are working, but still not bringing home enough money to pay the bills, particularly with huge heating costs.
As dozens of people continue to seek assistance daily, the agency is seeking volunteers and money.
Anyone wanting to volunteer should contact Linda Coplin at 633-5771.
