Hallie M. Brantley

HANAHAN, S.C. — Hallie M. Brantley, 90, died Monday (Jan. 22, 2001).

Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury, N.C., is in charge.

 

Rev. L.H. Clayton

KANNAPOLIS — The Rev. L.H. Clayton, 88, 427 West Ave., died Monday (Jan. 22, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born April 6, 1912, in Jackson County, Mr. Clayton was a son of Calvin Christopher and Martha Eugene Owens Clayton. He attended the Marion schools and was a graduate of Berea College, Berea,Ky. He was a member of Freewill Baptist Church, Spartanburg, S.C.

He retired as a Freewill Baptist Church minister after serving 46 years. He served pastorates in Marion, Kannapolis and Pilgrim in North Carolina; Toledo, Ohio; Chester, Spartanburg and Lancaster, S.C.

In addition to his pastoral labors, he was also active in local, state and national association service. He was moderator of the Bear Creek Association; was chairman of the Beaver Creek Ordaining Counsel for five years; served on the Presbytery Board of Wolverine Conference, Michigan, the Freewill Baptist Children’s Home Board, S.C., for 11 years, the General Board of National Association for two years; and one term on the National Sunday School Board. He taught at Beaver Creek Bible Institute, Lockhart, S.C., for three years.

His wife, Lucy Taylor Clayton, died June 9, 1991, and a son, Billy Ray Clayton, died June 17, 1963.

Survivors include daughters Bobbie C. Pressley and Opal C. Burris, both of Kannapolis; other sons Daniel and Charles Clayton, both of Chester, S.C.; sister Bertie Wilbanks, Marion; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Whitney Freewill Baptist Church, Spartanburg, S.C., conducted by the Rev. Johnnie Bullman and the Rev. Tim Hackett. Burial, Green Lawn Memorial Park, Spartanburg, S.C.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. The family will also receive friends from 12-1 p.m. Wednesday at Whitney Freewill Baptist Church, Spartanburg, S.C.

Paul Soloman Cornatzer

ADVANCE — Paul Soloman Cornatzer, 88, Fork-Bixby Road, died Monday (Jan. 22, 2001) at Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury.

Born June 3, 1912, in Davie County, Mr. Cornatzer was a son of the late Jacob Soloman and Ellen Berryman Cornatzer. He had worked as a nursing assistant at Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury, for 20 years. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a charter member of Bixby Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include wife of 50 years Louise Crews Cornatzer; sons Don Cornatzer, Marietta, Ga., and Emery and Jeffery Cornatzer, both of Advance; sister Sadie Gross, Pfafftown; and four grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Eaton Funeral Home chapel, Mocksville, conducted by the Rev. Carol Jackson. Burial, Bixby Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Donald Carlton Grubbs

Donald Carlton Grubbs, 53, Phillips Street, formerly of Germanton, died Monday (Jan. 22, 2001) after a lengthy period of declining health.

A native of Forsyth County, Mr. Grubbs was born Oct. 31, 1947, to the late Ivey Carlton and Odessa Beshears Grubbs. He was a member of Baux Mountain Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, and was employed by R.J.Reynolds Tobacco Co., Winston-Salem, for over 33 years.

Survivors include wife of 31 years Nancy Smith Grubbs; and daughters Donna Grubbs Rymer and Angela Grubbs Waddell, both of Salisbury.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home chapel, Rural Hall, conducted by the Rev. George Presson and the Rev. Clayton Smith. Burial, Crestview Memorial Park, Rural Hall.

Visitation:7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Patricia Eury Hammonds

ALBEMARLE — Patricia Gaynail Eury Hammonds, 35, 30780 Tom Road, died Monday (Jan. 22, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born July 7, 1965, in Stanly County, Mrs. Hammonds was a daughter of Fronail Morton Eury, Albemarle, and the late R.J. Eury. A 1984 graduate of North Stanly High School, she was a student at Stanly Community College and attended Hill Street Church of God, Badin.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include husband Jeffery Scott Hammonds; son Jeffery Nicholas Scott Hammonds, of the home; daughter Terri Danelle Nichole Eury, of the home; brothers Robert Wayne and Donald Bruce Eury, both of Albemarle; and sister Susan Eury, Albemarle.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday,Hill Street Church of God, Badin, conducted by the Rev. Robert Hart. Burial, Canton Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 11 a.m. Tuesday at the home of Fronail M. Eury, 30770 Tom Road.

James Coy Hartsell

ALBEMARLE — James Coy Hartsell, 76, 210 E. Fifth St., Smackover, Ariz., died Monday (Jan. 22, 2001) at Medical Center of South Arkansas.

Born Oct. 20, 1924, in Albemarle, Mr. Hartsell was a son of the late William Lee and Anna Brooks Hartsell. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II. He retired as a truck driver from Frank Thompson Transport Co.

Survivors include wife Melba McBroom Hartsell, Smackover, Ark.; sons Charles R. Hartsell, El Dorado, Ark., and Tony Hartsell, Loganville, Ga.; daughters Pamela Hinson, Monroe, and Vicki Hartsell Wetzler, Charlotte; brother Steve Hartsell, Albemarle; sisters Betty Payne, Naples, Fla., and Jo Ann Thompson, Mount Gilead; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A son, David Hartsell, preceded him in death.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Joe E. Smith. Burial, Red Cross Baptist Church cemetery. Full military rites by Albemarle-Stanly County DAV.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Tessie Hartsell, 16307 Highway 205, Oakboro.

 

Rev. P.H. Jackson

CHESTER, S.C. — The Rev. P.H. Jackson, 68, Chester, brother of the Rev. W.T. Jackson of Salisbury, N.C., died Sunday (Jan. 21, 2001) at his home.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Black Rock Baptist Church, Chester.

Harvey Pearson

Harvey Pearson, 1331 Hillsborough St., died Monday (Jan. 22, 2001) at his home.

Laura Hendricks Phillips

KANNAPOLIS — Laura Mae Hendricks Phillips, 76, 1206 Margaret Ave., died Jan. 22, 2001 at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after two years of declining health and two weeks of serious illness. She had resided at the home of daughter Pansy Jones of 2905 Compton Court, Concord, for the past eight months.

Born June 29, 1924, in Pickens, S.C., Mrs. Phillips was a daughter of the late Dillard and Essie Iola Lafoy Hendricks. She retired from Cannon Mills Plant 1, weave room.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Julius Jasper Phillips, and a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Phillips.

Survivors, in addition to daughter Pansy Jones, include daughter Sherry Dalton, Mount Ulla; sons J.J. Phillips Jr. and Christopher D. Phillips, both of Kannapolis; brothers James Hendricks, Liberty,S.C., and Gene Hendricks, Gordonville, Pa.; sister Lydia Sutherland,Pickens, S.C.; seven granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. John Sell and the Rev. Wes Judy. Entombment, Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Pansy Jones, 2905 Compton Court, Concord.

Margelene Allen Robbins

LEXINGTON — Margelene Allen Robbins, 74, Clay Street, died Sunday (Jan. 21, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Oct. 6, 1926, in Davie County, Mrs. Robbins, a daughter of the late Brake and Rena Williams Allen, was a homemaker. She was a member of Psalms 91 Church, Linwood.

Her husband, Paul Edward “Pete” Robbins, died in 1990.

Survivors include sons James E. and Donnie Robbins, both of Lexington; daughters Jan Taylor, Vickie Cook, Gail Combs and Sherry Potts, all of Lexington; brothers Clarence Comer, Yadkinville, and Ed Allen, Mocksville; sisters Carolyn McCrary, Cooleemee, and Faye Comer, Yadkinville; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Eaton Funeral Home chapel, Mocksville, conducted by the Rev. Max Shoaf. Burial, Jerusalem Baptist Church cemetery.

Inez Hatfield Shipley

ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Wednesday for Inez Hatfield Shipley, 77, Rockwell, who died Saturday (Jan. 20, 2001) at The Meadows Retirement Center.

Born Jan. 27, 1923, in Topeka, Kan., Mrs. Shipley, a daughter of the late Vernon and Myrtle Hatfield, was educated at West High School, Columbus, Ohio. She was a homemaker and a Methodist.

Her husband, Robert H. Shipley, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Jean Cheesman, Rockwell, and Carol Cline, Columbus,Ohio; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Rader-McDonald Funeral Home, West Jefferson, Ohio. Burial, Alton Cemetery, Alton, Ohio.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Hazeline Whitaker Shoe

ROCKINGHAM — Hazeline Whitaker Shoe, 80, 804 Long Drive, died Sunday (Jan. 21, 2001) at Windsor House of Rockingham.

Born July 20, 1920, in Mount Holly, Mrs. Shoe was a daughter of the late Clegg Watson and Sudie Newton Whitaker. A member of Highland Baptist Church, New London, she retired as a chef from Sunset Motel.

Her husband, Billy D. Shoe, preceded her in death.

Survivors include stepdaughter Doris Jean Haynes, Rockwell; two stepgrandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Doland T. Humphries.. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Marlin ‘Ja-Cy’ Thomas

The funeral will be Thursday for Marlin “Ja-Cy”Jacy Thomas, 65, 540 Log Barn Road, who died Saturday (Jan. 20, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 11, 1935, in Springfield,Ohio, Mr. Thomas was a son of Evelyn Farrish Thomas. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a master’s degree in economics.

He was an economic professor at Catawba College from 1964-1974 and was chairman of the Business Education Department at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College for the remainder of his career.

Survivors include sons Jim Thomas,Salisbury, and Jason A. Thomas, Cary.

Services: 7 p.m. Thursday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Clements. The body will be cremated.

Visitation: None.

Memorials: Holy Angels Residential Center, P.O.Box 710, 6600 E. Wilkinson Blvd., Belmont, NC 28012.

 

Rosalie York

The funeral is today for Rosalie York, 60, Bethel Church Road, who died Sunday (Jan. 21, 2001) at her home.

Born Feb. 18, 1940, in Iredell County, Miss York was a daughter of Colin James and Ruby Barnette York of Mocksville. She worked for Rowan Vocational Workshop and was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include brother Dennis James York, Mocksville; and sister Shirley Ann York, Winston-Salem.

Services were held at 11 this morning at Bethel United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. S.B. Warner, the Rev. Pam Strader and the Rev. Jack Luther officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Eaton Funeral Home was in charge.
