Monday (Jan. 22, 2001).

Rev. L.H. Clayton
KANNAPOLIS — The Rev. L.H. Clayton, 88, 427
West Ave., died Monday (Jan. 22, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born April 6, 1912, in Jackson County, Mr.
Clayton was a son of Calvin Christopher and Martha Eugene Owens Clayton. He
attended the Marion schools and was a graduate of Berea College, Berea,Ky. He
was a member of Freewill Baptist Church, Spartanburg, S.C.
He retired as a Freewill Baptist Church minister
after serving 46 years. He served pastorates in Marion, Kannapolis and Pilgrim
in North Carolina; Toledo, Ohio; Chester, Spartanburg and Lancaster, S.C.
In addition to his pastoral labors, he was also
active in local, state and national association service. He was moderator of the
Bear Creek Association; was chairman of the Beaver Creek Ordaining Counsel for
five years; served on the Presbytery Board of Wolverine Conference, Michigan,
the Freewill Baptist Children’s Home Board, S.C., for 11 years, the General
Board of National Association for two years; and one term on the National Sunday
School Board. He taught at Beaver Creek Bible Institute, Lockhart, S.C., for
three years.
His wife, Lucy Taylor Clayton, died June 9, 1991,
and a son, Billy Ray Clayton, died June 17, 1963.
Survivors include daughters Bobbie C. Pressley
and Opal C. Burris, both of Kannapolis; other sons Daniel and Charles Clayton,
both of Chester, S.C.; sister Bertie Wilbanks, Marion; 10 grandchildren; and 15
great-grandchildren.

Paul Soloman Cornatzer
ADVANCE — Paul Soloman Cornatzer, 88,
Fork-Bixby Road, died Monday (Jan. 22, 2001) at Hefner VAMedical Center,
Salisbury.
Born June 3, 1912, in Davie County, Mr. Cornatzer
was a son of the late Jacob Soloman and Ellen Berryman Cornatzer. He had worked
as a nursing assistant at Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury, for 20 years. A
veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a charter member of Bixby Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include wife of 50 years Louise Crews

Donald Carlton Grubbs
Donald Carlton Grubbs, 53, Phillips Street,
formerly of Germanton, died Monday (Jan. 22, 2001) after a lengthy period of
declining health.
A native of Forsyth County, Mr. Grubbs was born
Oct. 31, 1947, to the late Ivey Carlton and Odessa Beshears Grubbs. He was a
member of Baux Mountain Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, and was employed by
R.J.Reynolds Tobacco Co., Winston-Salem, for over 33 years.

ALBEMARLE — Patricia Gaynail Eury Hammonds, 35,
30780 Tom Road, died Monday (Jan. 22, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Born July 7, 1965, in Stanly County, Mrs.
Hammonds was a daughter of Fronail Morton Eury, Albemarle, and the late R.J.
Eury. A 1984 graduate of North Stanly High School, she was a student at Stanly
Community College and attended Hill Street Church of God, Badin.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include
husband Jeffery Scott Hammonds; son Jeffery Nicholas Scott Hammonds, of the
home; daughter Terri Danelle Nichole Eury, of the home; brothers Robert Wayne
and Donald Bruce Eury, both of Albemarle; and sister Susan Eury, Albemarle.

ALBEMARLE — James Coy Hartsell, 76, 210 E.
Fifth St., Smackover, Ariz., died Monday (Jan. 22, 2001) at Medical Center of
South Arkansas.
Born Oct. 20, 1924, in Albemarle, Mr. Hartsell
was a son of the late William Lee and Anna Brooks Hartsell. A veteran of the
U.S. Navy, he served during World War II. He retired as a truck driver from
Frank Thompson Transport Co.
Survivors include wife Melba McBroom Hartsell,
Smackover, Ark.; sons Charles R. Hartsell, El Dorado, Ark., and Tony Hartsell,
Loganville, Ga.; daughters Pamela Hinson, Monroe, and Vicki Hartsell Wetzler,
Charlotte; brother Steve Hartsell, Albemarle; sisters Betty Payne, Naples, Fla.,
and Jo Ann Thompson, Mount Gilead; eight grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.

KANNAPOLIS — Laura Mae Hendricks Phillips, 76,
1206 Margaret Ave., died Jan. 22, 2001 at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord,
after two years of declining health and two weeks of serious illness. She had
resided at the home of daughter Pansy Jones of 2905 Compton Court, Concord, for
the past eight months.
Born June 29, 1924, in Pickens, S.C., Mrs.
Phillips was a daughter of the late Dillard and Essie Iola Lafoy Hendricks. She
retired from Cannon Mills Plant 1, weave room.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Julius
Jasper Phillips, and a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Phillips.
Survivors, in addition to daughter Pansy Jones,
include daughter Sherry Dalton, Mount Ulla; sons J.J. Phillips Jr. and
Christopher D. Phillips, both of Kannapolis; brothers James Hendricks,

LEXINGTON — Margelene Allen Robbins, 74, Clay
Street, died Sunday (Jan. 21, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical
Center, Winston-Salem.
Born Oct. 6, 1926, in Davie County, Mrs. Robbins,
a daughter of the late Brake and Rena Williams Allen, was a homemaker. She was a
member of Psalms 91 Church, Linwood.
Her husband, Paul Edward “Pete” Robbins, died
in 1990.

Robbins, both of Lexington; daughters Jan Taylor, Vickie Cook, Gail Combs and

Born Jan. 27, 1923, in Topeka, Kan., Mrs.
Shipley, a daughter of the late Vernon and Myrtle Hatfield, was educated at West
High School, Columbus, Ohio. She was a homemaker and a Methodist.
Her husband, Robert H. Shipley, preceded her in
death.

a daughter of the late Clegg Watson and Sudie Newton Whitaker. A member of
Highland Baptist Church, New London, she retired as a chef from Sunset Motel.
Her husband, Billy D. Shoe, preceded her in
death.

Born Oct. 11, 1935, in Springfield,Ohio, Mr.
Thomas was a son of Evelyn Farrish Thomas. He graduated from the University of
Illinois with a master’s degree in economics.
He was an economic professor at Catawba College
from 1964-1974 and was chairman of the Business Education Department at Rowan-Cabarrus
Community College for the remainder of his career.

The funeral is today for Rosalie York, 60, Bethel
Church Road, who died Sunday (Jan. 21, 2001) at her home.
Born Feb. 18, 1940, in Iredell County, Miss York
was a daughter of Colin James and Ruby Barnette York of Mocksville. She worked
for Rowan Vocational Workshop and was a member of Bethel United Methodist
Church.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include
brother Dennis James York, Mocksville; and sister Shirley Ann York,
Winston-Salem.
Services were held at 11 this morning at Bethel
United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. S.B. Warner, the Rev. Pam Strader and the
Rev. Jack Luther officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
