Boyce Lee Carter

Boyce Lee Carter, 71, Salisbury, died Saturday (Jan. 20, 2001) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation after a period of declining health.

Born Nov. 27, 1929, in Union County, Mr. Carter was a son of the late Robert Lee and Gertie Elizabeth Klontz Carter. Educated in the Union County schools, he had retired from Parkdale Mills.

Survivors include sons Gerald Brumley, Patrick Carter and Robert Carter, all of Salisbury; daughters Tammy Carter, Salisbury, and Lisa Shipman, Lattermore; a brother; a sister; and 12 grandchildren.

The body will be cremated. There will be no services or visitation.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Elmer Edgar Edwards

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Tuesday for Elmer Edgar Edwards, 56, 1514 Valwood St., who died Saturday (Jan. 20, 2001) at the home of a sister, Rachael Stancel, in Marshville. He had been in declining health for five months.

Born Aug. 8, 1944, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Edwards was a son of the late James O. and Lydia Collins Edwards. Educated in the Cabarrus County schools, he had retired last year due to ill health. Prior to his retirement, he was an inspector with the Fieldcrest Cannon packaging department.

Survivors include brothers Jimmy and David Edwards, both of Kannapolis, and another sister, Margaret Edwards, Longdale.

Services: Graveside, 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Marshville City Cemetery, Marshville, conducted by the Rev. Leon Smith.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Tuesday,Whitley’s Funeral Home.

 

Jean Hunter Gaylor

KANNAPOLIS — Funeral services were held Sunday for Jean Elizabeth Hunter Gaylor, 74, 1519 Lydia St., who died Thursday (Jan. 18, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord.

Born June 7, 1926, in Norfolk Va., she was the daughter of the late Catherine Elizabeth Rowe and Robert Hunter. A homemaker, she was educated at Rufner High School in Norfolk.

Her husband, Carroll Christenberry Gaylor, died Feb. 6, 1988.

Survivors include sons Carroll Christenberry Gaylor Jr. of Reno, Nev., Raymond Ray Gaylor of Concord, and Robert Allen Gaylor, Paul Edward Gaylor and Roy Roger Gaylor, all of China Grove; daughter Sandra Gibson of Kannapolis; brothers Robert Hunter Jr. of Orlando, Fla., and Paul Hunter of California; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home in Landis, conducted by the Dr. Leighon Culler. The body was cremated.

 

Louis N. Hand Jr.

GREENSBORO— Louis N. Hand Jr., 88, a native of Spencer, died Sunday (Jan. 21, 2001) at Carolina Commons, Greensboro.

Born Oct. 15, 1912, Mr. Hand was a son of the late Louis N. and Flora Collins Hand. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1932 from Davidson College, where he was a summa cum laude graduate. He earned a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1940.

A lieutenant commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve, he was former vice president of finance and secretary/treasurer of Wysong &Miles Co. From 1933 to 1942, he taught and served as an administrator in the Salisbury City Schools.

His wife, Irma R. Hand, preceded him in death.

Survivors include sisters Doris Hand Rex, Greensboro, and JeanetteHand Saintsing, Salisbury; and brother Frank R. Hand, Greensboro.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Westminster Gardens Mausoleums.

Visitation: Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, 515 N. Elm St.

 

Ethel Poplin Haneline

MOCKSVILLE — Ethel Poplin Haneline, 93, West Maple Avenue, died Sunday (Jan. 21, 2001) at Somerset Court.

Born April 6, 1907, in Guilford County, Mrs. Haneline was a daughter of the late Thomas and Lizzie White Poplin. A homemaker, she was a charter member of Mocksville Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Her husband, Harrison Haneline, died in 1985. She was also preceded in death by a son, Harold Poplin, and two stepsons, Kenneth and Robert Haneline.

Survivors include stepson Bill Haneline, Wyoming, Del.; stepdaughters Clara Eggeston and Louise Haneline, both of Lexington, and Evelyn Jarrett, Thomasville; sister Frances Cromer, Winston-Salem; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Union Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Calvin Anderson.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Eaton Funeral Home.

 

Dempsey Larry Raby

MOUNT AIRY — Dempsey Larry Raby, father of Gloria Ann Howard, China Grove, died Saturday (Jan. 20, 2001) at High Point Care Center.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Skyline Memory Gardens.

Visitation: 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, Moody Funeral Home.

 

Leola Gardner Safrit

FAITH — Leola Gardner Safrit, 87, Blue Ridge, Ga., formerly of Faith, died Friday (Jan. 19, 2001, at Chatuge Regional Hospital, Hiawassee, Ga.

Born March 1, 1913, in Rowan County, Mrs. Safrit was a daughter of the late Clifton T. and Clara Gantt Gardner. She was educated at Granite Quarry High School. A bookkeeper, she had retired in 1970 from the Dade County-Miami Airport Authority in Florida.

A longtime member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Florida, she was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Rockwell, where she sang in the choir, at the time of her death. She was also a member of Eastern Star 117 in Salisbury.

Her husband, Joseph Eugene Safrit, died Jan. 8, 1987.

Survivors include son Joseph G. Safrit, Raleigh; daughter Sandra G. Brauns, Blue Ridge, Ga.; sisters Mildred Byrd and Juanita Somers, both of Salisbury; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell, conducted by the Rev. James Melton, pastor, Bethel Baptist Church, Rockwell. Burial, Shiloh United Church of Christ cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Jacy Thomas

Marlin “Ja-Cy” Jacy Thomas, 65, 540 Log Barn Road, died Saturday (Jan. 20, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.
