Joe Louis Heggins

Joe Louis Heggins, 64, 526 W. Marsh St., died Thursday (Jan. 11, 2001) at Genesis Eldercare, after three weeks of serious illness.

Born Oct. 28, 1936, in Rowan County, Mr. Heggins was a son of the late John Albert and Rochelle Johnson Heggins and stepmother Virginia H. Heggins. Educated in Rowan County and Davie County public schools, he had retired from Rico Tile and Marble.

He was a member of Mount Zion CME Church, where he was on the steward and trustee boards and was a member of the senior choir and Methodist Men. He was also a former member of Eureka Lodge 45, Scottish Rite.

Survivors include wife Dorothy A. Ballard Heggins; foster son Rodrick Lewis, Aston, Pa.; daughter Vanessa Heggins Black, of the home; foster daughters Gwendolyn Seaman, Monica Brown, Robin Pharr and A’Shanta L. Scarbough, all of Salisbury; brothers Walter Heggins, Salisbury, Andrew Heggins, New Haven, Conn., and Novell Heggins and Henry Heggins, both of Washington, D.C.; sisters Mary Graham, Statesville, and Helen M. McQuiller, Inez Price and Shirley Reid, all of Salisbury; grandchildren Tonya Heggins and Shannon Heggins, reared in the home; and one great-grandchild.

Amber Nicole Morton

ALBEMARLE — Amber Nicole Morton, 17, 34158 George Road, died Wednesday (Jan. 10, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born June 30, 1983, in Stanly County, Miss Morton was the daughter of Billy James and Karen Denita Wooten Morton of the home. She was also the daughter of Phil Clayton. She was a senior at South Stanly High School.

A member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, she was in the youth choir and youth group. She was a member of South Stanly High School softball team and Dixie softball team. Named to Who’s Who in High School Students in N.C., she was in the South Stanly Marching Band and studied cosmetology at West Stanly High School. She was a part-time employee of Wal-Mart.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include brothers Bryan and Cory Morton, of the home; maternal grandparents Keith and Barbara Burris, Albemarle; paternal grandparents Elwood and Mildred Morton and Betty Clayton, all of Albemarle; paternal great-grandparents Mary Huneycutt and Claude Burleson, both of Albemarle; and maternal great-grandparents Virgil and Pauline Burris, New London, and Mrs. James E. Burleson, Albemarle.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Bethlehem Baptist Church, Norwood, conducted by the Rev. Lowell Brown and Jeff Parsons. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Hartsell Funeral Home. The remainder of the time, the family will be at the home of Keith and Barbara Burris, 35232 Beth Road.

 

Helen Carter Patterson

Helen Carter Patterson, 74, Monetta, S.C., formerly of Rowan County, died Wednesday (Jan. 10, 2001) at Medical College of Georgia, Augusta.

Elizabeth Schessow

LEXINGTON — Elizabeth Brock Schessow, 79, Arbor Drive, died Thursday (Jan. 11, 2001) at her residence.

Born April 28, 1921, in Duplin County, Mrs. Schessow was a daughter of the late Albert B. and Winnie Estelle Merrit Brock. Her mother died and she was raised by the late Hattie Lee May Holder. A homemaker, she was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph H. Schessow, and son Leland Tyndall.

Survivors include daughter Beverly Pauline Schessow, Sacramento, Calif.; son Richard Ralph Schessow, Oklahoma City, Okla.; sisters Kathleen Norris, Dunn, Ethel Bevins, Lexington, Ruby Christine Smith, Wilmington, and Mildred McGee and Rebecca Long, both of Thomasville; brothers Tommy Brock and Dewey Brock, both of Lexington; and two grandsons.

Services: 4 p.m. Saturday, Pilgrim Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Jim White. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Saturday, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home.

Jessie Willard Yates

Jessie Willard Yates, 74, of Salisbury, died Thursday (Jan. 11, 2001) at his residence, after a period of declining health.

Born Feb. 2, 1926, in Rowan County, Mr. Yates was a son of the late William Henry and Mary Bell Shives Yates. A graduate of Granite Quarry High School, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II.

He was a retired dye house supervisor with Cone Mills, where he served for 45 years. He was a member of Haven Lutheran Church, the Walt Wagoner Sunday School Class, Lutheran Men in Mission, Rowan Civitan Club and Rufty-Holmes Senior Center Breakfast Club.

Survivors include wife Betty Rinehart Yates, whom he married July 27, 1949; daughters Fonda Howard, Hilton Head Island, S.C., and Susan Crump, Huntersville; brothers Hayden Yates, Faith, and Wallace Yates, Salisbury; and four grandchildren.

Services: Service of Remembrance, 11 a.m., Saturday, Haven Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Ronald W. Fink, pastor. The body will be cremated. Burial, 10 a.m., Tuesday, Salisbury National Cemetery, Statesville Boulevard site.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

Hugh Raney Bradshaw

OAK ISLAND — Hugh Raney Bradshaw, 69, 1207 W. Yacht Drive, died Thursday (Jan. 11, 2001) at his home.

Born March 3, 1931, in Rowan County, Mr. Bradshaw was a son of the late Hugh Raney and Juanita Ervin Bradshaw.

He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War and played professional baseball on the AAA level.

Mr. Bradshaw retired from the finance business and moved from Charlotte to Oak Island in 1995. He attended First Baptist Church in Oak Island and was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Charlotte and Oak Island Lodge 758.

Survivors include Louise Miller Bradshaw, his wife of 45 years; sons Darrell Bradshaw and Mark Bradshaw, both of Charlotte; and two grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Saturday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Leland Stephens.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Peacock-Newnam Funeral Home, Southport.

Johnny Emory

FAITH — Johnny Emory, 79, of Faith, died Friday (Jan. 12, 2001) at Genesis Eldercare in Salisbury.

Bessie Elizabeth Hart

The funeral will be Sunday for Bessie Elizabeth Hart, 78, 911 Locke St., who died Tuesday (Jan. 9, 2001) at her home.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Trinity Presbyterian Church USA, conducted by the Rev. George Hunter, pastor. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the church. Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

John Hassell Joyce

John Hassell Joyce, 91, 319 Idlewood Drive, formerly of Mount Airy, died Thursday (Jan. 11, 2001) at his home.

Born Oct. 7, 1909, in Stokes County, Mr. Joyce was a son of the late John Rufus and Mary Hester Goins Joyce.

Educated in the Mount Airy Schools, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of Sanford American Legion Post 382.

He worked for Mack’s, a chain of dime stores, and managed the home office store in Sanford from 1936 to 1968. He served as district manager from 1968 to 1971 and as buyer from 1971 to 1975, when he retired.

His wife, Nell Tritt Joyce, died on Jan. 9, 1981.

Survivors include daughter Barbara Joyce Chambers, Salisbury, with whom he lived; brother Jack Joyce, Henderson, Nev.; sister Mary Goins, Mount Airy; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Saturday, Buffalo Cemetery, Sanford, conducted by the Rev. Tom Loftis, minister, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Sanford.

Visitation: None.

Joyce Parker

Joyce Parker, 51, 203 E. Horah St., died Thursday (Jan. 11, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
