Larry Julian Bean

Larry Julian Bean, 58, of High Point, and formerly of Spencer, died Sunday (Jan. 7, 2001) at his mother’s residence.

Born April 11, 1942, in Rowan County, Mr. Bean was a son of Betty K. Bean, Spencer, and the late Raymond Floyd Bean. Educated in Rowan County schools, he was a graduate of North Rowan High School, class of 1960, and a graduate of Mitchell Community College, Statesville. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he was employed with Delta Airline, Greensboro, for the past 21 years. He was a member of Spencer Jaycee’s and Oakdale Baptist Church, Spencer, where he was a former Sunday school teacher.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Lyerly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Robert T. Heard, former pastor, Oakdale Baptist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, with military rites conducted by the Rowan County Veteran’s Council.

Visitation:7-8:30 tonight, at the funeral home.

Memorials:Donor’s choice.

 

Ernest Broadway

The funeral will be Thursday for Ernest Broadway, 64, 3720 Stokes Ferry Road, who died Saturday (Jan. 6, 2001) at his residence, after several years of declining health.

Born March 14, 1936, in Rowan County, Mr. Broadway was a son of the late Woodrow and Sallie Scott Broadway. Educated in Rowan County public schools, he was last employed in waste management. He was a member of New Zion Baptist Church, Dunns Mountain, Salisbury.

Survivors include wife Mary Wilkerson Broadway, Linwood; sons Scotty Wilkerson, Kannapolis, Steven Broadway, Concord, Michael Broadway, Greensboro, Frederick Broadway, Linwood, Ernest Broadway, Salisbury, and William Broadway, Atlanta, Ga.; a godson reared in the home, Ronald Beatty, Granite Quarry; daughters Sheryl Kerns, Salisbury, and Ernestine Broadway, Kannapolis; brothers Stephen Broadway, Suitland, Md., and William Broadway, Killen, Texas; sisters Willis Charleston and Elzona Charleston, both of Salisbury; 21 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services:3 p.m. Thursday, Noble &Kelsey Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Paul Jones. Burial, New Zion Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 2:30 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.

 

B.C. Collins Jr.

KANNAPOLIS —B.C. Collins Jr., 68, 203 Small St., died Sunday (Jan. 7, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after 17 years of declining health and three weeks of serious illness.

Born March 3, 1932, in Chesterfield County, S.C., Mr. Collins was a son of the late Bolton C. and Pearline Sims Collins. Employed with Cannon Mills, Plant 1, No. 1 card room for 22 years and later with Linn-Corriher Mills, Landis, he retired in 1984. He and his wife were house parents at the Church of God Children’s Home, Concord, from 1977 to 1990.

Survivors include wife Wilhelmina Register Collins; stepsons Chris Arnette and Dale Arnette, both of Kannapolis, and Joseph Arnette, Mount Pleasant; stepdaughters Joanna Cramer, Rockwell, and Hilda Boswell, Kannapolis; brother Larry Collins, Kannapolis; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 8 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Walter Burgess. Graveside, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, at the funeral home.

Lois Peoples Cranfill

Lois Peoples Cranfill, 76, of Bethel Drive, died Monday (Jan. 8, 2001) at her residence.

Born Oct. 3, 1924, in Davie County, Mrs. Cranfill was a daughter of the late Barns and Emma Hutchins Peoples. She worked at the Hefner VA Medical Center for over 17 years and was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school in the 3- to 5-year-old class. She was a member of Salisbury VFW.

Survivors include daughter Jean C. Lefler, Mount Ulla; sister Lucille P. Cline, Salisbury; and one grandchild.

Services:Memorial, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Eaton Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. James Cook. The body will be cremated.

Visitation:Immediately following the service. At other times the family will be at 1070 Bethel Drive, Salisbury.

Millard F. Gamble

Millard F. Gamble, 87, 1022 South Church St., died Sunday (Jan. 7, 2001) at Brightmoor Nursing Center.

Born May 9, 1913, in Manning, S.C., Mr. Gamble was a son of the late William and Hattie F. Gamble. Educated in South Carolina public schools, he was the owner and operator of the Shoe Repair Shop of City Hatters, Salisbury, and retired from Phil’s Shoes. He was a member of Mount Calvary Holy Church, where he was a deacon.

He was preceded in death by a stepson, Karry E. Daniels.

Survivors include wife Bertha Gamble; stepsons Billy Daniels Jr., and David A. Daniels, both of Salisbury; daughters Millicent G. Jackson and Susan G. Barnes, both of Silver Springs, Md.; stepdaughters Marvel Daniels and Darlene Meekins, both of Kannapolis; brothers William Gamble and Wesley Gamble, both of Florence, S.C.; sisters Louise G. Smith, Arling, Va., Connith Lewis, San Diego, Calif., and Elizabeth G. Black, Florence, S.C.; two grandchildren; and 11 step-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Wednesday, Noble &Kelsey Funeral Home, conducted by Bishop Harvey Rice. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation:1 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home.

 

Frances Scott Graham

STATESVILLE — Frances Scott Shoe Graham, 79, of Troutman, died Monday (Jan. 8, 2001) at her residence.

Born Sept. 28, 1921, in Davie County, Mrs. Graham was a daughter of the late Arthur Victor and Mary Cauble Scott. She was a retired inspector for Cannon Mills, Kannapolis, and was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, Statesville.

Mrs. Graham was preceded in death by her first husband, Murl Jacob Shoe, and second husband, Eubert Heglar Graham.

Survivors include daughter Gail S. Torbush, Mocksville; son Richard Shoe, Myrtle Beach; stepdaughters Dorothy G. Brackett, Huntersville, Marion G. Smith, Mooresville, Brenda G. Freeland, Statesville, and Anne G. Ladd, Statesville; and four grandchildren.

James Franklin Hudson

CHINA GROVE — James Franklin Hudson, 89, 330 Rose Ave., died Monday (Jan. 8, 2001) at Rowan RegionalMedical Center, Salisbury.

Born July 19, 1911, in Stanly County, Mr. Hudson was a son of the late James Frank and Mintie Whitaker Hudson. Educated in Stanly County and Montgomery County schools, he retired in 1972 from China Grove Textiles. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Sam May Sunday School Class.

Survivors include wife Ruth Haywood Hudson, whom he married April 16, 1938; son Donald Barry Hudson, Ft. Wright, Ky.; and daughter Patsy Hudson Parnell, Salisbury.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Edward Daniel and the Rev. Jimmy Hinson. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation:6:30-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Z.V. King Jr.

KANNAPOLIS — Z.V. King Jr., 84, 307 West 20th St., died Monday (Jan. 8, 2001)at his residence.

Born Feb. 12, 1916, in Anson County, Mr. King was a son of the late Zeb Vance and Mary Jane Medlin King. He was self-employed, operating King’s Auto Body Co. Inc., Kannapolis, since1960 and had worked for the former Bill Dove Motor Co., Kannapolis.

Mr. King was a member of Center Grove Lutheran Church, Kannapolis. He was a charter member of Allen-Graham Masonic Lodge No. 695 where he was a past-master, a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Charlotte, a member of Oasis Temple Shrine, where he was active with the Flying Fezes, and was a charter member of the Cabarrus Shrine Club.

Survivors include wife Maxine Watson King; sons Butch King, Barry W. King and Daryl W. King, all of Kannapolis; daughter Zebetta M. King, Apex; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services:Memorial, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Center Grove Lutheran Church, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Zachariah Harris III. Graveside, 10 a.m. Wednesday, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Hazel Bernhardt Kluttz

The funeral will beWednesday for Hazel Bernhardt Glover Kluttz, 94, of Salisbury, who died Monday (Jan. 8, 2001) at N.C. Lutheran Home, Hickory.

Born June 18, 1906, in Rowan County, Mrs. Kluttz was a daughter of the late James “Jim”Monroe and Mollie Bernhardt Glover. Educated in Rowan County schools and China Grove Farm Life School, she was a switchboard operator and general office employee for the Salisbury Post for 21 years before her retirement in 1972. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, WELCA, the Eva Peeler Sunday School Class, the Golden Opportunity Club, the Retired Senior Citizens Club of Salisbury, and was a former member of the Eastern Star.

Her husband, Roy L. Kluttz, died Dec. 20, 1942.

Survivors include sons Roy L. Kluttz, North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Harold L. Kluttz, Jefferson; daughter Donna Lee Jarrett, Newton; sister Addie G. Ketner, Salisbury; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, St. John’s Lutheran Church chapel, conducted by the Rev. Carl Sachtleben, senior minister, and the Rev. Dr. Bill Mims of Beth Eden Lutheran Church, Newton. Burial, Union Lutheran Church cemetery.

‘Pop’ Boyden Lefler

Jelamyre “Pop” Boyden Lefler, 87, of Gold Hill, died Monday (Jan. 8, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 11, 1913, in Rowan County, Mr. Lefler was a son of the late Boyden Alexander and Jane Ludwig Lefler. Retired from Cannon Mills, Plant No. 6 weave room, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Rockwell and attended Liberty United Methodist Church. He was in the CCWork Camps.

His first wife, Carrie Mae Heilig Lefler, died in February 1942; his second wife, Ruth Holshouser Lefler, died July 2, 1988; and son Jerry Dean Lefler died Dec. 2, 1995.

Survivors include wife Marie Ketchie Hill Lefler; stepson Dennis F. Hill, Gold Hill; daughter Carrie Elizabeth Shinn, Rockwell; stepdaughter Jean Lefler, Salisbury; stepbrother Paul Sheeks, Salisbury; sister Dovie L. Fesperman, Spencer; four grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

Services:4 p.m. Wednesday, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Benny L. Vickrey, pastor, First Baptist Church of Rockwell. Burial, First Baptist Church cemetery.

Virginia Moore

Virginia Faye Beck Moore, 64, of Pasadena, Texas, and formerly of Rowan County, died Friday (Jan. 5, 2001) in Houston, Texas.

Lady’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

Margaret Smith Potts

MOCKSVILLE — Margaret Smith Potts, 81, of U.S. Highway 64 East, died Monday (Jan. 8, 2001) at Forsyth Medical Center.

Born Jan. 2, 1920, in Davie County, Mrs. Potts was a daughter of the late Tallmadge and Josephine Armsworthy Smith. Co-owner of Smith Shoe Store in Mocksville, she was a member of Cornatzer Baptist Church.

Her husband, Worth Garland Potts, died in 1974.

Survivors include son W.C. “Dub”Potts, Mocksville; daughters Kay Potts West and Glenda Potts Boger, both of Mocksville; brothers Mark A. Smith, Wareham, Mass., and Norman T. Smith, Mocksville; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Wednesday, Cornatzer Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Richard Whiteheart and the Rev. B.A. Carroll. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home.
