David Andrew Lewis, 64, Port Richey, Fla., died
Dec. 9, 2000, in Hudson, Fla.
Born in Guilford County, Mr. Lewis formerly lived
in Salisbury, where he owned and operated Lewis Used Cars, Paint &Body Shop,
Car Wash & Wrecker until his retirement. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Survivors include wife Virginia “Ginger”
Riggs, Port Richey, Fla.; son Davie Lewis, Tarpon Springs, Fla.; sisters Marilyn
Harrison, Charlotte, Betty Troutman, Salisbury, and Peggie Wilhelm, Fort Myers,
Fla.; and several stepchildren and step-grandchildren.
Hazel Hight Buffaloe
Hazel Hight Buffaloe, 76, formerly of
Brownsville, Tenn., died Thursday (Jan. 4, 2001)at Brightmoor Nursing Center.
Born Nov. 16, 1974, in Wellwood, Tenn., Mrs.
Buffaloe was a daughter of the late Thomas E. and Estella Church Hight. Educated
in the Haywood County (Tenn.) schools, she owned and operated Buffaloe Store in
Brownsville with her husband before retiring.
She was a member of Union Grove United Methodist
Church in Brownsville, where she was also active in the Home Demonstration Club.
Her husband, Jack “J.W.” Williamson Buffaloe,
died April 8, 1995.
Survivors include son Ronald “Ron” E.
Buffaloe, Salisbury; brothers John High, Brownsville, Tenn., Loyd Hight,
Bolivar, Tenn., and James Hight, Memphis, Tenn.; sister Betty H. Jones,
Southaven, Misss.; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Brownsville Funeral
Home, Brownsville, Tenn. Burial, Haywood County Memorial Gardens, also in
Brownsville.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.
The body will remain at Summersett Funeral Home until taken to Brownsville.

Jake Junior Gray, 59, 1144 Laurel St., died
Friday (Jan. 5, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center,
Winston-Salem, after an illness of six weeks.

Lucille Mitchell Mauldin
CHARLOTTE — Lucille Mitchell Mauldin, 73, 6009
King George Drive, died Thursday (Jan. 4, 2001) at Mercy Hospital after four
years of declining health and 18 months of serious illness.
She was born Oct. 10, 1927, in Madison County,
Ga., the daughter of the late Guy Henry and Lee Ottis Parham Mitchell. Mrs.
Maudlin was formerly assistant manager of L.A. Bowen Grocery. She was a member
of Lane Street Baptist Church, Kannapolis.
Survivors include husband Bill E. Mauldin;
daughter Janice Mauldin Bowers, Charlotte; son Jeffrey Mauldin, Charlotte;
sisters Hazel Sexton and Ora Belle Hildreth, both of Kannapolis; and three
grandchildren.

Dorothy Odom Nantz
MOORESVILLE —Dorothy Odom Nantz, 68, Mount Ulla
Highway, died Thursday (Jan. 4, 2001) at Genesis Eldercare.
Born May 21, 1932, in Lincoln County, Mrs. Nantz
was a daughter of the late William George and Mary Moore Odom. She had retired
as an inspector for Burlington Industries after 27 years with the company.
Survivors include husband William Gray Nantz,
whom she married Dec. 9, 1950; son Preston Nantz, Statesville; daughter Sheila
Austin, Iron Station; brother George Odom, Marietta, Ga.; sisters Willie
Morrison, Winston-Salem, Addie Mae Dean and Linda Moser, both of Mooresville,
Brenda Sellers, Kannapolis, and Ruby Mayhew, Loganville, Ga.

Francis LaFollette Smith
The funeral will be Sunday for Francis LaFollette
Smith, 76, 3785 Shue Road, who died at the Hefner VA Medical Center on Friday
(Jan. 5, 2001).
Mrs. Smith was born Feb. 28, 1924, in Smithfield,
Ky., daughter of the late Edna Wolfolk and Thomas Luther LaFollette. She
attended the Kentucky and Indiana schools.
Mrs. Smith worked at Cannon Mills as an overedger
operator in the washcloth department. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, she
was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.
Survivors include husband Harold Eugene Smith;
son Darrell Smith, Salisbury; daughters Frances Gene Lamberth, Statesville, and
June Marie Smith and Katrina M. Myrick, both of Salisbury; sister Anabell
Burdette of New Albany, Ind.; seven grandchildren; and several
great-grandchildren.
Services: 2:30 p.m. Sunday, St. Mark’s Lutheran
Church, Highway N.C. 150, conducted by the Rev. Gene Bruce. Burial, church
cemetery, with military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Wade A. Underwood
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. —Wade A. Underwood, 87,
704 S.W. 16th St., died Thursday (Jan. 4, 2001) at Hospice House.
Born Feb. 18, 1913, in Stanly County, N.C., Mr.
Underwood was a son of the late William Jackson and Ellen Poplin Underwood. He
had retired as owner and operator of a gas station.
Survivors include wife Deloris Poplin Underwood;
daughter Doris Wilbur, Boca Raton; and a granddaughter.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Hartsell Funeral Home,
Albemarle, N.C., conducted by Rom Kerley. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory, also
in Albemarle.
