James E. Bumgarner
HARMONY —James E. Bumgarner, 75, County Line
Road, died Wednesday (Jan. 3, 2001) at Davis Medical Center.
Born May 28, 1925, in Iredell County, Mr.
Bumgarner was a son of the late James Osmond and Florence Sweet Bumgarner.
Retired from Ryder PIE in 1982, Mr. Bumgarner was a truck driver and a member of
Rock Spring Baptist Church.
Survivors include wife Betty Branson Bumgarner;
sons James T. Bumgarner, Mocksville, Samuel O. Bumgarner, Carlyle, Ill., Terry
Cardwell, Belews Creek, and Jerry Cardwell, Harmony; daughters Faye Harris,
Harmony, Sue Bumgarner, Augusta, Ga., and Tracy Sanbavol, Faith; sister Doris
Shinn, Charlotte; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

conducted by the Rev. Steve Hedgecock. Burial, church cemetery.

Edith Stoner Cranford
The funeral will be Saturday for Edith Stoner
Cranford, 92, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (Jan. 3, 2001) at Rowan Regional
Medical Center.
Born Nov. 20, 1908, in Rowan County, Mrs.
Cranford was a daughter of the late Fannie Morgan and William M. Stoner. She was
educated in Rowan County schools and retired from Macannal Mills.
She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran
Church, the WELCA and the Senior Saints and was a life member of the Lutheran
Southern Seminary Auxiliary.
Her husband, Crevice Cranford, died Oct. 15,
1973.
Survivors include daughter Carolyn Sides,
Salisbury; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, St. Peter’s
Lutheran Church, conducted by the Revs. Doug and Lori Hefner, co-pastors.
Burial, church cemetery.

Roland Poindexter Craven
MOORESVILLE — Roland Poindexter Craven, 91,
2025 Coddle Creek Highway, died Thursday (Jan. 4, 2001)at Lake Norman Regional
Medical Center.
Born March 29, 1909, in Iredell County, Mr.
Craven was a son of the late Frank McKnight and Roberta Kimmons Craven. Educated
in Cabarrus County schools, he was a graduate of Davidson College and was a
member of the Kannapolis YMCA board of directors for 25 years. He was employed
with Cannon Mills Co. for 44 years and was Plant 4 superintendent. He was a
member of Coddle Creek ARP Church, where he was a former deacon.
His wife, Helen Jones Craver, died in 1992.
Survivors include daughters Margo Craven Ervin,
New Bern, Jeanette Craven, Mooresville, and Debbie Craven Kluttz, Salisbury; son
Frank M. Craven, Concord; stepdaughter Nancy Allman, China Grove; sister Lola
Mann, Mooresville; and 10 grandchildren.

Samuel ‘Sam’ Gordon Jr.
Samuel Harvey “Sam”Gordon Jr., 79, Salisbury,
died Thursday (Jan. 4, 2001) at his home.
Born Oct. 5, 1921, in Spencer, Mr. Gordon was a
son of the late Mary Withers and Samuel Harvey Gordon. He was a graduate of
Spencer High School and Mars Hill College in Mars Hill and was a veteran of the
U.S. Army, serving during World War II.
He was employed by Southern Railway for 47 years,
retiring as a conductor in 1987.
Mr. Gordon was a member of the Spencer First
Baptist Church and the United Transportation Union.
His first wife, Mary Beaver Gordon, died July 25,
1960.
Survivors include wife Helen McGee Gordon, whom
he married March 15, 1964; daughters Cynthia G. Stafford, Morganton, and Harriet
G. Goad, Wilmington; and one grandchild.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, graveside, Rowan
Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Franklin Myers, minister, Spencer First
Baptist Church.

Ruth McIntyre W. Helms
OAKBORO — Ruth McIntyre Whitley Helms, 220 West
Eight St., died Thursday (Jan. 4, 2001) at her residence.
Born in Stanly County, Mrs. Helms was a daughter
of the late Sunny Lewis and Martha Tucker McIntyre. She was a retired seamstress
at Allison Manufacturing Co. and a member of Big Lick Baptist Church.
Mrs. Helms was preceded in death by her first
husband, Grant Hugh Whitley.
Survivors include husband W.C. “Lum” Helms;
sons the Rev. Barry Grant Whitley, Albemarle, and Donald E. Whitley, Oakboro;
stepsons W.C. Helms Jr., New Bern, and Jimmy Helms, Albemarle; daughters Gayle
Whitley Jamison, Monroe, and Pamela Whitley Jenkins, Concord; stepdaughter Patsy
Helms Carpenter, Oakboro; brother Roy McIntyre, Troy; sisters Lena Hartsell,
Thomasville, Ruby Canup and Doris Huneycutt, both of Oakboro, Fannie Sossomon,
Concord, and Rachel Hatley, Stanfield; eight grandchildren; six
step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

MOUNT OLIVE — Zbina “Tim” Stanley Holt, 72,
119 Tarheel Drive, died Sunday (Dec. 31, 2000) at the home of daughter Rebecca
H. Dean, Raleigh.
He is survived by a daughter Veronica Holt,
Salisbury.

with full military honors.

SPENCER — Kathryn Freeman Rushing, 82, of
Cleveland, Tenn., formerly for Spencer, died Thursday (Jan. 4, 2001) in
Cleveland.

Modena E. Ward
KANNAPOLIS —Modena E. Ward, 80, 1402 Venus St.,
died Wednesday (Jan. 3, 2001) at her residence, after two months of declining
health and four weeks of serious illness.
Born May 12, 1920, in Forsyth County, Mrs. Ward
was a daughter of the late Lonnie Columbus and Lola Alexander Wilhelm. A
homemaker, she was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church, Kannapolis.
Her husband, William “Bill” Ward, died Sept.
24, 1991.
Survivors include daughter Judy Ward Gainey,
Kannapolis; sons Mike Ward and Robert Ward, both of Kannapolis, and Bill Ward,
Landis; brothers John Lamb, Birmingham, Ala., and Jim Lamb, Kannapolis; sisters
Ruth Kirouac, Onancock, Va., and Ejoe “Tootie” Bolman, Georgia; nine
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
