Obituaries

            Dwight Wilburn Goodman

Dwight Wilburn Goodman, 75, of Gold Hill, died Tuesday (Jan. 2, 2001) at Spencer Health Care.

Born Jan. 25, 1925, in Rowan County, Mr. Goodman was a son of the late Paul T. and Emma Arey Goodman. Educated in Rowan County schools, Mr. Goodman was a retired truck driver and tool and die maker. He was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church.

Survivors include wife Lois Lomax Goodman; stepson Lee Powell, Albemarle; daughter Deborah Lynn Goodman, Gold Hill; stepdaughters Brenda Melton, Albemarle, and Barbara Poplin, Aquadale; brother Harry K. Goodman, Denton; sisters Rachael Hahn, Stanfield, Ruth Hammill, Gold Hill, and Geneva Royston, Ga.; five step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Services:3:30 p.m. Thursday, Liberty United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mark Helms, pastor, and the Rev. Floyd Wood, former pastor. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home.

Maggie Belle C. Hilburn

DENTON — Maggie Belle Crumpler Hilburn, 84, 106 Mountain Vista Road, formerly of Albemarle, died Tuesday (Jan. 2, 2001) at Mountain Vista Health Park.

Born April 8, 1916, in Fayetteville, Mrs. Hilburn was a daughter of the late David Crumpler and Claudia Crumpler Melvin. Mrs. Hilburn was a retired teacher with the Cumberland County schools. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, where she had served on the administrative board. She was a member of Albemarle Woman’s Club and Dogwood Garden Club, for as long as her health permitted, and was a 1938 graduate of East Carolina Teacher College.

Survivors include stepsister Annie Laurie Goetz, Raleigh; halfbrother Ralph Melvin, Fayetteville; and half-sister Kathleen Atkinson, Charlottesville, Va.

Services: Graveside, 3 p.m. Thursday, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Ben Wilson.

Visitation:No scheduled time.

Willavene ‘Billie’ Jones

Willavene “Billie” Jones, 84, N.C. Lutheran Home, and formerly of East Colonial Drive, died Monday (Jan. 1, 2001) at N.C. Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Born Oct. 21, 1916, in New Castle, Pa., Mrs. Jones was a daughter of the late Charles and Lona Gray. A homemaker, she was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a past Worthy Matron, and was a member of the Mr. and Mrs. Sunday School.

Survivors include husband W. Don Jones; sons Melvin D. Jones, Surf City, N.J, and Kenneth W. Jones, Spring City, Pa.; daughters Katherine J. Fazler, Moneta, Va., and Janet J. Nifong, Clayton; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Griffis, minister of First United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Sherri Barnes, associate minister of First United Methodist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8 tonight and 1-1:45 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.

 

Willie Mae Bailey Jones

Willie Mae Bailey Jones, 68, 519 N. Cedar St., died Friday (Dec. 29, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, after three weeks of serious illness.

Services:1 p.m. Thursday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Ethel Reavis. Burial, U.S. National Cemetery-VA Medical Center, Salisbury.

Visitation:12:30 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence and at 320 Acres Lane, Salisbury.

 

Katherine Beaver Mabrey

KANNAPOLIS —Katherine Wilamena Beaver Mabrey, 83, 406 Jackson St., died Tuesday (Jan. 2, 2001) at the home of her daughter, Jo Ann Talbert, after six months of declining health.

Born Nov. 8, 1917, in Rowan County, Mrs. Mabrey was a daughter of the late George M. and Maybelle Funderburk Beaver. Mrs. Mabrey was employed with Cannon Mills Co. Plant No. 1 wash cloth department for 44 years until her retirement. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Kannapolis, where she was active with the Exodus Sunday School Class. In earlier years she had grown up in the Ebenezer Lutheran Church community of China Grove.

Her husband, Henry L. Mabrey, died April 15, 1989.

Survivors include daughter Jo Ann Mabrey Talbert, Kannapolis; stepson Arthur Lee Mabrey, Forest, Va.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Don Shuman, the Rev. Pat Purdy, and Sarah Weaver. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of a daughter, Jo Ann M. Talbert, 522 Wright Ave., Kannapolis.

Jake ‘Tang’ McCullough

The funeral will be Thursday for Jake “Tang” McCullough, 67, 1305 W. Marsh St., who died Friday (Dec. 29, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Services:2 p.m. Thursday, Mount Zion Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Nilous Avery II, pastor. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation:1 p.m. Thursday, at the church. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Mitchell &Fair Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Steve Franklin Orrell

ADVANCE —Steve Franklin Orrell, 82, of Baltimore Road, died Tuesday (Jan. 2, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center.

Born May 3, 1918, in Davie County, Mr. Orrell was a son of the late Lee B. Orrell and Nannie Beauchamp. Retired from Drexel-Heritage Furniture Co. of Mocksville, Mr. Orrell served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church.

His wife, Ruth Jones Orrell, died in 1997, and son Steve Dale Orrell also preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughter Barbara O. Frye, Advance; brother Herman B. Orrell, Clemmons; sisters Aldine Daniels, Cooleemee, Modell Munday, Mocksville, and Kirby Price, Greensboro; and two grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Thursday, Bethlehem United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mark Weekley. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial, Mocks United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation:7-9 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of a daughter, Barbara O. Frye, 1090 NC Highway 801 S., Advance.
