Charlie M. Earnhardt Jr.

Charlie Monroe Earnhardt Jr., 63, of Salisbury, died Monday (Jan. 1, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born June 10, 1937, in Rowan County, Mr. Earnhardt was a son of Charlie Monroe and Virginia Russ Earnhardt. Educated in Rowan County schools, he was retired from the City of Salisbury, where he served as a water operator at the water plant. He was a member of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ and Spencer Moose Lodge and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include wife Barbara Coley Earnhardt, whom he married May 16, 1965; brothers Grady Odell Earnhardt and Delmer Ray Earnhardt, both of Salisbury; sisters Delcie Marie Smith, Carolyn E. Cress, Ruth E. Jordon and Patricia E. Bowers, all of Salisbury, and Doris Elizabeth Carter, Rockwell.

Services:11 a.m. Wednesday, St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Charles Sigler, interim pastor. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

 

Dwight Wilburn Goodman

GOLD HILL — Dwight Wilburn Goodman, 75, of Gold Hill, died Tuesday (Jan. 2, 2001) at Spencer Health Care.

Powles Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

Clyde ‘Cowboy’ Herrin

OAKBORO —Clyde Eugene “Cowboy” Herrin, 71, 20180 Newsome Road, died Monday (Jan. 1, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born May 7, 1929, in Stanly County, Mr. Herrin was a son of the late Paul William and Ida Mae Hatley Herrin. He was a retired supervisor from Wiscassett Mills, where he worked for 48 years.

Mr. Herrin was preceded in death by infant daughters Shelby Jean Herrin and Sharon Ann Herrin.

Survivors include wife Mary Burleson Herrin, Oakboro; son Clyde Ray Herrin, Stanfield; daughter Linda Herrin Morgan, Charlotte; sister Jewell Efird, Albemarle; brothers Norman Herrin, Alabama, and Rayvon Herrin, Charlotte; sister Betty Jean Tucker, New London; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.

Services:11 a.m. Wednesday, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Oakboro, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Phillip Hunter. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home.

 

Willette Kelly Hollar

EAST SPENCER — Willette Kelly Hollar, 81, 510 Andrews, died Saturday (Dec. 30, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, after an extended illness.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

 

Shelby J. Allen Hutchens

MOCKSVILLE — Shelby J. Allen Hutchens, 63, U.S. Highway 601, died Sunday (Dec. 31, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Oct. 25, 1937, in Surry County, Mrs. Hutchens was a daughter of Pauline Soffley Allen of Mocksville and the late Clyde Allen.

She retired from QST in 1993 and was a member of Turrentine Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband William Roger Hutchens; son William Gary Hutchens, Mocksville; daughter Kathy Jean Hutchens, Midland; brother Fred Allen, Cooleemee; sisters Joanne Barney, Jane Sammons, Peggy Gaither, Glenda Call and Darlene Naylor, all of Mocksville; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Davie Funeral Service, conducted by the Rev. Joe Smith. Burial, Turrentine Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation: 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Willavene ‘Billie’ Jones

Willavene “Billie” Jones, 84, North Carolina Lutheran Home, formerly of E. Colonial Drive, died Monday (Jan. 1, 2001) at her residence.

Edward Josey

Edward Josey, 79, 807 Yost Road, died Sunday (Dec. 31, 2000) at his home.

Born on Sept. 13, 1921, in Rowan County, Mr. Josey was a son of the late Laura Bostian and John Josey.

He was educated in the Rowan County schools and was a saw mill operator.

He was preceded in death by a son, Glenn Josey, who died in February, 1995.

Survivors include daughters Ruby J. Starnes, Lexington, Bertha J. Daniels, Granite Quarry, Ethel J. Combs, Mount Holly, and Ann J. Benfield, Concord; sister Kathleen Rymer, Rockwell; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Joe Black. Burial, Salisbury City Cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Katherine Mabrey

KANNAPOLIS — Katherine Wilamena Mabrey, 83, 406 Jackson St., died Tuesday (Jan. 2, 2001) at the home of daughter Joann Talbert, 522 Wright Ave.

Allen Clayton Overcash

MOORESVILLE —Allen Clayton Overcash, 65, of Shinnville Road, died Sunday (Dec. 31, 2000) at Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation, Statesville.

Born March 8, 1935, in Iredell County, Mr. Overcash was a son of the late Ira M. and Emma Mackey Overcash. He worked for Union Carbide for 15 years and was a member of Amity Lutheran Church, Cleveland.

Survivors include daughter Mary Jo Horne, Mooresville; brothers Max D. Overcash, Mooresville, and Ira M. Overcash Jr., Statesville; sisters Katherine Lytzner, Burton, Mich., and Doris Bass, Troutman; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Jay Boggs. Burial, Amity Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home.

 

Francis ‘Sonny’ Shaw

Francis Gordon “Sonny” Shaw, 41, 5907 Mooresville Road, died Saturday (Dec. 30, 2000) at his residence.

Born June 11, 1959, in Washington, D.C., Mr. Shaw was a son of the late Richard Manning and Doris Burden Shaw. Educated in Maryland public schools, he served in the Merchant Marines for 12 years. He had been employed for the past two years with his brother at Sudden Impact Auto Body &Paint Shop, Mooresville Road, Salisbury. He was a member of the Milbridge Ruritan Club.

Survivors include brother Danny Lee Shaw, Salisbury; sisters Margaret Ann Kuhn and Patricia Walsh, both of Maryland, Donna Burkey, Georgia, and Sandra Ruth Hager, Virginia.

Services:7 p.m. Thursday, Trinity Wesleyan Church, conducted by the Rev. Ernest Mullins, pastor. The body will be cremated, and burial will be at a later date in Anderson, S.C.

Visitation: The family will receive friends following the service at the church. At other times, family will be at the home of the Danny Shaw, 6328 Mooresville Road, Salisbury.

Adrian L. Shuford Jr.

CONOVER — Adrian Lafayette Shuford Jr., 90, 609 First Avenue Place, Northeast, Conover, died Saturday (Dec. 30, 2000).

At the time of his death, Mr. Shuford was trustee emeritus of Catawba College, Salisbury. First elected to the Board of Trustees in 1944, he served as secretary of the board and served as its chairman for 26 years from 1951 to 1977. Catawba College honored him with a Doctor of Humanitarian Service degree for his outstanding leadership. A major benefactor of the college, the stadium on the campus was named for him and his wife.

Services:Memorial, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Trinity United Church of Christ in Conover, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Carroll Bartholomew and the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Clapp, chaplain and senior vice president of Catawba College.

Visitation:6-7 tonight at the residence.

Billy Ray Sparks

ALBEMARLE — Billy Ray Sparks, 63, 602 Prospect Road, died Sunday (Dec. 31, 2000)at his residence.

Born July 4, 1937, in Catawba County, Mr. Sparks was a son of the late Arlow Hubert and Elizabeth Harris Sparks. He was employed with Proctor Silex and was a member of Hillside Baptist Church.

Survivors include sons Michael Sparks and Billy Arnold Sparks, both of Dobson; daughters Debra Hamilton Myers, Albemarle, and Dona Mullis, Oakboro; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services:4 today, Hartsell Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Joe E. Smith. Burial, Old Fashion Mission, Albemarle.

Visitation:None. The family will be at the home of Debra Hamilton Myers, 602 Prospect Road.

 

Cletus Eli Whitley

ALBEMARLE — Cletus Eli Whitley, 80, 24465 Half Mile Road, died Monday (Dec. 31, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 23, 1921, in Stanly County, Mr. Whitley was a son of the late James Daniel and Sarah Eleanor Huneycutt Whitley. He was a retired sales supervisor with Stanly Hardware. A member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where he was a past Sunday School teacher, he was a past Brotherhood leader of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and the Stanly Baptist Association. He was serving as the director of Stanly Baptist Association Disaster Relief.

Survivors include wife Irene Huneycutt Childers Whitley, Albemarle; daughter Jeanette Whitley, Albemarle; stepdaughter Cynthia Furr, Albemarle; son Durayne Whitley, Albemarle; sisters Madge Whitley, Patricia Whitley, Mildred Furr, and Jewel Purser, all of Albemarle, and Betty W. Almond, Ridgecrest; brothers Buford Whitley, Oakboro, and James C. Whitley, Albemarle; three grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Phillip Hunter. Burial, Canton Baptist Church Cemetery.

Doris Daniel Wilson

Doris Daniel Wilson, 63, of Salisbury, died Sunday (Dec. 31, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born March 22, 1937, in Rowan County, Mrs. Wilson was a daughter of the late William Austin and Carrie Daniel. Educated at Boyden High School and Rowan Technical College, she was a licensed practical nurse and a member of the Nursing Association. She had been employed at Rowan Regional Medical Center and later at the Hefner Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where she retired in October 2000. She was a Baptist.

Survivors include husband Harry Stanural Wilson, whom she married April 7, 1954; sons William E. Wilson, Welcome, Harry Stanural Wilson III, Salisbury; daughters Beth Ann Wilson, Wallburg, Leigh Anna Schultze, Lexington, S.C., and McKensie Leigh Wilson, of the home; and seven grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Wednesday, Powles Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Benny L. Vickrey, pastor First Baptist Church, Rockwell. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Garden.

Visitation:6:30-8 tonight, at the funeral home.

 

Fanny Mae G. Winburn

KANNAPOLIS —Fanny Mae Gainey Winburn, 66, 513 Martin Circle, died Sunday (Dec. 31, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Feb. 9, 1934, in Darlington County, S.C., Mrs. Winburn was a daughter of the late Worthy B. and Frances Shehorn Gainey. A homemaker, she was a member of Peace Free Will Baptist Church, Kannapolis.

Her husband, Cord Winburn, died June 12, 1990.

Survivors include sons Larry Winburn and Jerry Winburn, both of Chesterfield, S.C.; sister Geneva Ray, Kershaw, S.C.; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Prince of Peace Free Will Baptist Church, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Chuck Overcash and the Rev. Ralph Willis. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.
