Marshall Bell

LEXINGTON — Marshall Bell, 85, 1430 New Jersey Church Road, died Saturday (Dec. 30, 2000)at Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury.

Mr. Bell was born March 8, 1915, in Davidson County.

Leo Adolphus Brown

Leo Adolphus Brown, 81, 119 Richmond Road, died Saturday (Dec. 30, 2000)at Rowan RegionalMedical Center after one year of declining health and two weeks of serious illness.

Born Nov. 25, 1919, in Rowan County, Mr. Brown was a son of the late James and Amanda Elizabeth Morgan Brown. Educated in the Salisbury schools, he graduated from Boyden High School and Lees- McRae College.

He was manager of the Advance Store for 20 years. He also worked at Isenhour Brick & Tile Co. for 20 years and at Security Bank for 10 years before retiring.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where he served as an usher and was a member of the Fisher Cox Sunday School Class. Mr. Brown was also a member of the Golden Opportunity Club and a former member of Salisbury Lions Club.

Survivors include wife Mildred Brown Brown, whom he married Nov. 2, 1941; son Stuart Scott Brown, Atlanta; daughter Leigh B. Shelton, Salisbury; sister Edna B. Kluttz, North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, St. John’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Carl Sachtleben, pastor, and the Rev. Dr. Joseph Crowther, pastor of King of Glory Lutheran Church, North Myrtle Beach, S.C. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation:7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Doris Daniel Wilson

Doris Daniel Wilson, 63, Salisbury, died Sunday (Dec. 31, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Ruby Mae Burrell Farrell

Ruby Mae Burrell Farrell, 75, 805 Safrit Road, Lot No. 6, died Saturday (Dec. 30, 2000)at Rowan RegionalMedical Center after five years of declining health.

Born Oct. 5, 1925, in Akron, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late John Clayton and Mamie Floyd Jones Burrell. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Samuel William Farrell, died Nov. 10, 1980.

Survivors include daughters Brenda Farrell Vinson, and Judy Farrell Dwiggins, both of Salisbury, Barbara Watkins White, Columbia, S.C., and Teresa Farrell Jones, Camden, S.C.; sons William Floyd Farrell, Camden, S.C., Thomas Lee Farrell, Durham, and Martin Clayton Farrell, Salisbury; brothers Robert Burrell, Delta, Pa., Jerry and Butch Burrell, both of Robbinsville, and Joe Burrell, Toney, Ala.; sisters Euna Mae Waldrup and Cathy Morgan, both of Robbinsville; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Donald Smith and the Rev. Clayton Palmer Jr. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation:7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home.

 

Mary Evelyn Harkey

ALBEMARLE — Mary Evelyn Whitley Harkey, 71, 306 Burleson St., died Sunday (Dec. 31, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 5, 1929, in Stanly County, she was a daughter of the late Kelsey E. and Ossie Lee Cline Whitley. She was a seamstress with East Apparel, and a member of Grace Baptist Church.

Survivors include husband Grady Lee Harkey; sons Douglas R. Harkey, Stanfield, and Gary Steven Harkey, Reidsville; sisters Lillie Hinson and Ruby Litaker, both of Albemarle; brothers Grady L. and Lowell “Pete” Columbus Whitley, both of Albemarle; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Hartsell Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Eddie Barbee and the Rev. Sid Martin. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory.

Visitation:6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

William Harvey Hundley

William Harvey Hundley, 66, 270 Lariat Circle, died Sunday (Dec. 31, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 4, 1934, in Rockingham County, Mr. Hundley was a son of Maude Dealie Hundley, Biscoe, and the late Cyrus Russell Hundley. Educated in Rockingham County schools, Mr. Hundley was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in Korea. He retired from Southern Railway, where he was a conductor for 31 years. He was co-owner of Play Skool Day Care in Spencer.

Survivors include wife Shelby Joyce Hundley; daughter Teresa Gayle Stout, Salisbury; brothers Robert Earl, James Leon, and Cyrus Kenneth Hundley, all of Seagrove, Howard Odell Hundley, Baltimore, Md., Donald Wayne Hundley, Ramseur, and John Michael Hundley, Mount Julie, Tenn.; sister Margaret Ann Neal, Robbins; and two grandchildren.

Services:3 p.m. Wednesday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Arnold Comer, Seagrove. Entombment, Rowan Memorial Park.

Johnny Melvin Mesimer

WOODLEAF —Johnny Melvin Mesimer, 70, 1980 Highway 801, died Saturday (Dec. 30, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born June 24, 1930, in Union County, Mr. Mesimer was a son of the late Alban Luther and Lela Rabel Barringer Mesimer. Educated in Union County schools, Mr. Mesimer was a lifelong farmer and involved with rodeo. He was also a construction worker. He was a member of Woodleaf Baptist Church, a deacon and member of the church council, a Sunday school superintendent and a Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include wife Sarah Rebanell Graver Mesimer, whom he married June 6, 1954; sons Michael “Mike” Lynn, and Timothy “Tim” Melvin Mesimer, both of Mount Grove, Mo., and Johnny Craig Mesimer, Woodleaf; daughter Wanda Gail Pender, Woodleaf; granddaughter raised in the home Robin Marie Mesimer; brothers Terry, Everette and Vauldery Mesimer, all of Concord, and Elvin Mesimer, North Wilkesboro; and 16 grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Tuesday, Woodleaf Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Chris Williams. Burial, Legion Memorial Park, Cooleemee.

Nellie Weaver Robinette

KANNAPOLIS —Nellie Evelyn Weaver Robinette, 87, formerly of Venus Street, died Saturday (Dec. 30, 2000)at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a year of declining health.

Born Jan. 11, 1913, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Martin R. and Maggie Casper Weaver. She was a member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Robinette.

Survivors include sister Willa W. Alexander, Landis; brother Jack C. Weaver, Salisbury; and half brother Dennis Weaver, Rockwell.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Coy Privette. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation:7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of sister Willa W. Alexander, 511 W. Ridge Ave., Landis.

 

Earl Cooper Sercy

The funeral will be Tuesday for Earl Cooper Sercy, 72, 240 Mike Drive, who died Saturday (Dec. 30, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 28, 1928, in Harnett County, Mr. Sercy was a son of the late Eddie Preston and Flora Bain Sercy. Educated in Harnett County schools, Mr. Sercy was a security guard for National Starch. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include wife Mary Sanders Cordell Sercy; brother Jeff Sercy, Dunn; and sister Thelma Wilson, Sanford.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Michael Taylor. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home of Zona Morris, 2530 Highway 152, China Grove.

Francis ‘Sonny’ Shaw

Francis Gordon “Sonny” Shaw, 41, 5907 Mooresville Road, died Saturday (Dec. 30, 2000)at his residence.

Margaret Litaker Wilson

CHINA GROVE —Margaret Amelia Litaker Wilson, 93, 220 Brown Road, died Sunday (Dec. 31, 2000) at Care Inn Nursing after a period of declining health.

Born July 24, 1907, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late John Franklin and Maggie Cress Litaker. Educated in Rowan County schools, she retired from Cannon Mills sewing department. She was a member of Thyatira Presbyterian Church.

Her husband, James Franklin Wilson, died Jan. 8, 1980. She was also preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Wilson.

Survivors include daughter Virginia W. Goodman, China Grove; and three grandchildren.

Services:11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Thyatira Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Layton Culler and the Rev. Malcolm Bullock. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the church.
