Firefighters from a number of departments responded to the fire in Landis this morning.

LANDIS — A fire destroyed a Landis apartment this morning and sent a child and his father to the hospital with burns.

Firefighters responding to the duplex on South Central Avenue found Apartment 331 engulfed in flames. A caller alerted authorities at 7:20 a.m.

Units from Landis, China Grove and Kannapolis fire departments helped fight the blaze.

Rowan County Emergency Medical Services transported 29-month-old Daniael Salazar and his father, Mariano Salazar, 34, to NorthEast Medical Center in Concord.

Emergency Services Director Wayne Ashworth said the two sustained first-degree burns to their cheeks. The father also sustained second-degree burns.

Ashworth said the injuries were “nothing that appeared to be serious.” He said their oxygen levels were good, and they were both in stable condition when paramedics left them at the hospital.

The two remained in the emergency room at NorthEast late this morning.

Assistant County Fire Marshal Dan Peters, who investigated the fire with the Landis department, said it began when a television set in the living room had an electrical short.

A group of residents gathered outside the duplex this morning as firefighters investigated.

Landis Fire Chief Reed Linn said Apartment 331 appeared to be a complete loss. The Salazars, a family of five, lived there. Apartment 229, home to a family of five, sustained some smoke and fire damage but can be repaired, Reed said. The Red Cross will assist both families.

Linn said Larry Palmer owns the duplex.
