Catawba women go for title

BY HORACE BILLINGS
SALISBURY POST

Catawba’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, whose records rank among the best in Division II, will face perhaps their most important doubleheader of the season when they entertain Presbyterian’s Blue Hose in a South Atlantic Conference battle tonight at Goodman Gym.

The Lady Indians, 20-4 overall and 11-1 in the SAC, can capture the conference championship with a victory in the 6 p.m. game.

A win will give the Lady Indians a two-game lead with a game with Carson-Newman here Saturday left on their schedule.

A loss, however, will drop the Lady Indians into a tie with Presbyterian, which edged the Lady Indians 86-79 in overtime in their first meeting.

Presbyterian carries a 10-2 SAC record and 20-6 overall mark into the game.

“It will be a tough game for us,”said Catawba coach John Duncan, who earned his 100th victory with the Lady Indians at Newberry Saturday night. “We are in good shape. We have everybody healthy and should be up for the game,” he added. “We are confident. We have played well at home.”

The Lady Indians have won their last seven games — and 12 of the past 13 — and are unbeaten at home.

A great deal of attention will be focused on the men’s game as well. The Indians will be gunning for their 21st win against four losses. They share second place in the SAC race with Presby with a 9-3 record.

A win over the Blue Hose will give the Indians second place heading into Saturday’s Carson-Newman game.

Sharing the spotlight tonight will be a football awards ceremony at halftime of the men’s game. SAC Commissioner Doug Echols will present the conference championship trophy to the Indians.
