CHINA GROVE — Samuel Elliott Clark, 63,
formerly of 1985 Mt. Hope Church Road, China Grove, died Saturday (Feb. 17,
2001) at Brightmoor Nursing Center in Salisbury.

Paul Taylor Currin
KANNAPOLIS —The funeral will be Monday for Paul
Taylor Currin, 79, of 290 South Circle Drive NW, Concord, who died Thursday
(Feb. 15, 2001) at his home.
Born Dec. 14, 1921, in Oxford, Mr. Currin was the
son of the late Crawford C. and Minnie Bell Williamson Currin. He retired in
1990 after 57 years as a self-employed jeweler.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of
Kannapolis and the Ben Jones Sunday School Class. He was a member of the
American Legion Beaver Pittman Post 115, a World War II veteran and a graduate
of Evans Business College and Spencer’s Watchmaker’s School.
A daughter, Emily Taylor Currin, preceded him in
death.
Survivors include wife Evelyn Boone Currin, of
the home; son Brian Lee Currin, Concord; daughters Beth C. Loew, Vienna, Va.;
and Paula Ann Currin, Falls Church, Va.; and one granddaughter.

Loia Marie Holt
ALBEMARLE —Lois Marie Walker Holt, 77, of 1401
N. 6th St. Apt. 503A, Albemarle, died Friday (Feb. 16, 2001) at Hospice of Union
County.
Born Sept. 30, 1923, in Stanly County, Mrs. Holt
was the daughter of the late Laura Helen Simmons Walker and William Elijah
Walker. She worked at Wiscassett Mills for 43 years as a spinner until she
retired.
She was a member of Congregational Christian
Church and a graduate of Albemarle schools.
Survivors include sons Allan Reed Rothwell,
Kingsport, Tenn., David Rothwell, Statesville, and Billy Holt, Albemarle;
daughter Myra Wallace, Smithfield; six grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.

Myrtle Hughes
KANNAPOLIS — Myrtle Creswell Hughes, 86,
formerly of 306 E. 26th St., Kannapolis, died Saturday (Feb. 17, 2001) at Brian
Center in Salisbury after she had been in declining health for two years and
seriously ill for three days.
Born June 8, 1915, in Cabarrus County, Mrs.
Hughes was the daughter of the late Frank and Mollie Blackwelder Creswell. She
worked for the former Draymore Manufacturing Inc. in Mooresville for 30 years
until retiring in 1980.
She was a member of North Kannapolis Baptist
Church and taught Sunday school for many years.
Her husband, John W. Hughes, preceded her in
death.
Survivors include son John Hughes, Kannapolis;
daughter Judy McClamrock, Silver Springs Fla.; sister Pauline Karriker,
Kannapolis; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Alvin ‘Wolf’ Jones
ROCKWELL — Alvin Eugene “Wolf” Jones, 49,
of Rockwell, died Thursday (Feb. 15, 2001) at his home.
Born July 20, 1951, in Rowan County, Mr. Jones
was the son of Evelyn West Jones of Rockwell and the late W.C. Jones. He was a
graduate of East Rowan High School and was a press operator in the textile
industry.
He was a Baptist and a veteran of the U.S.
Marines who served during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include wife Kimberley Lambert Jones,
of the home; son Joshua Jones and daughter Casandra Jones, of the home; and
sisters Paula Foster and Sandra Gail Jones of Rockwell.

Salisbury National Cemetery, the Statesville Boulevard site, conducted by the
Rev. Larry Perry.

Liby Eller Mayhew
MOORESVILLE — Liby Eller Mayhew, 79, S. Academy
St., Mooresville, died Saturday (Feb. 17, 2001) at Lake Norman Regional Medical
Center.
Born June 23, 1921, in Mooresville, Mrs. Mayhew
was the daughter of the late Carrie Benfield Eller and W. Neal Eller. She was a
homemaker and member of Jones Memorial United Methodist Church. She was active
in the Mooresville chapter of the AARP.
Her husband, Edward Eugene Mayhew Sr., preceded
her in death.
Survivors include sons Ed E. Mayhew Jr.,
Statesville; Don Mayhew, Northfield, Mass.; and Larry Mayhew, Chapel Hill;
sisters Elizabeth Reid, Mooresville; and Nell Watts, Matthews; seven
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ruby Darnell McRorie
KANNAPOLIS — Ruby Darnell McRorie, 86, died
Saturday (Feb. 17, 2001) at Transitional Health Services in Kannapolis. She had
been ill for several years and seriously ill for one week.
Born Nov. 26, 1914, in Mecklenburg County, Mrs.
McRorie was the daughter of the late W.W. Darnell and Margaret Cole Darnell. She
was educated in Mecklenburg County schools and worked at the W.T. Grant Co. for
28 years, retiring in 1975.
She was a member of Kirkwood Presbyterian Church
and was a former Sunday school teacher.
Her husband, Grover E. McRorie Sr., preceded her
in death.
Survivors include sons Grover E. McRorie Jr. and
Bobby Lee McRorie, both of Kannapolis; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren
and four great-great-grandchildren.

Leon Richardson
KANNAPOLIS — Capt. Herbert Leon Richardson, 59,
of 406 Brentwood Circle, died Saturday (Feb. 17, 2001) at NorthEast Medical
Center in Concord after suffering a stroke on Feb. 11.
Born Sept. 12, 1941, in Cabarrus County, Capt.
Richardson was the son of the late Avery Odell Richardson and Grace Bogan
Richardson.
He joined the Kannapolis Police Department in
1965 and moved through the ranks until his promotion to captain in 1985. He
retired in November 2000 after 35 years of service.
A graduate of A.L. Brown High School and Davidson
County Community College, he received an Advanced Certificate in law enforcement
in 1976 and was a certified instructor for the N.C. Criminal Justice Training
and Standards Commission. He was past president of the Southeastern Internal
Affairs Investigators Association.
Through the Kannapolis Police Department, he
received the Robert Eury Award in 1997 and the Distinguished Service Award in
2000.
Capt. Richardson served in the U.S. Air Force
from 1961 to 1965 as a member of the 3320th Retraining Group stationed in
Amarillo, Tex. He was a member of the Oasis Temple, treasurer of the Cabarrus
Shrine Club, a member of Allen Graham Masonic Lodge and a member of the Blue
Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club Inc.
Survivors include wife Karen Harless Richardson,
of the home; son Chris Richardson, Concord; daughters Angela Buchanan, Banner
Elk; and Gina Airheart, Concord; brothers Ray Richardson, Jacksonville, Fla.;
and Charles Richardson, Altamonte Springs, Fla.; sister Marjorie Chambers,
Kannapolis; and four grandchildren.
Services: Full police burial at 3 p.m. Tuesday,
North Kannapolis Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Coy Privette. Burial in
Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis. Members of the Kannapolis Police
Department’s Special Response Team, which Capt. Richardson was instrumental in
forming, will serve as pallbearers.
