Kathleen Coggins

Sarah Kathleen Baker Coggins, 80, of 514 Idlewood Drive, died Saturday(Feb. 10, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born May 23, 1920, in Lancaster County, S.C., Mrs. Coggins was a daughter of the late Susie Humphries and Lewis Baker.

She graduated from Kershaw High School and was a homemaker and a charter member of Milford Hills Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by a son, Benjamin Lewis Coggins, on April 13, 1960.

Survivors include husband Ray B. Coggins, whom she married on July 12, 1951; sons Larry Gregory, Salisbury, and Alan Coggins, Cleveland, Tenn.; daughter Kathy Anderson, Salisbury; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Milford Hills Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Allen and the Rev. Tom Roberts. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial, City Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today, Summersett Funeral Home. Other times the family will be at the home of Larry Gregory, 3227 Player Court, Crescent Golf Club.

Mary Ida Upright Davis

KANNAPOLIS — Mary Ida Upright Davis, 69, 315 W. 13th St., died Saturday (Feb. 10, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born June 15, 1931, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Davis was a daughter of the late Mary Edna Isenhour and G.C. Upright. She retired in 1993 from Rowan-Salisbury Schools after 25 years of service.

Survivors include husband Thomas Floyd Davis; children James Douglas Ross, Concord, Alice Faye Blackwelder and Janice Louise Lazenby, both of China Grove, Barry Wayne Ross and Linda Darlene Honeycutt, both of Kannapolis; stepdaughter Sherry Fink, Utah; brothers John “Bo” Upright, Sammy Upright and Marshal “Buck” Upright, all of Kannapolis; sister Ruth Mayfield, Kannapolis; six grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, Memorial Independent Baptist Church, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Bill Baugess and the Rev. Howard Torrence. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

 

Floyd Junior Fleming

EAST SPENCER — Floyd Junior Fleming, 72, of 313 Barbour St., died Wednesday (Feb. 7, 2001) at his home.

Born Oct. 15, 1928, in Rowan County, Mr. Fleming was a son of the late Beulah Luckey and Floyd Fleming. Educated in Rowan County schools, he was a former employee of Cone Mills. He attended Trinity Baptist Church in Mocksville.

Survivors include wife Lucille Pulliam Fleming, Mocksville; son Len Montgomery, Salisbury; daughters Mary “Liz” Heggins and Sarah Ann Fleming, both of Salisbury, Catherine Fleming, New York, and Patricia White, High Point; brothers John and Carl Fleming, both of Salisbury, and Ralph Fleming, Spencer; sisters Ruth Fleming, Louise F. Gray and Leila Cuthbertson, all of Salisbury; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Rowan Funeral Service, conducted by the Rev. W.T. Jackson. The body may be viewed Monday and Tuesday until the service time. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: None. The family will be at the home of Ruth Fleming, 517 N.Long St.

 

Leotha Dulin Fowler

MOCKSVILLE — Leotha Dulin Fowler, 77, 159 Holman St., died Thursday (Feb. 8, 2001) at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Winston-Salem, after four weeks of serious illness.

Mrs. Fowler was a daughter of the late Exie Booe Dulin. A housewife, she attended Davie County schools and attended St. John AMEZion Church, Mocksville.

She was preceded in death by husband Roland Fowler in February 1973.

Survivors include son Garland Fowler, Salisbury; daughter Valerie R. Chunn, Lewisville; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Monday, St. John AMEZion Church, Mocksville, conducted by the Rev. Michael McCray. Burial, Fairfield Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 2 p.m. Monday at the church.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Sue Pickler Lisk

ALBEMARLE — Dora Mae “Sue” Pickler Lisk, 84, 622 Yadkin St., died Friday, (Feb. 9, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born May 23, 1916, in Stanly County, Mrs. Lisk was a daughter of the late Dora Miller and Edgar Poe Lisk.

Survivors include daughter Peggie Lisk Smith, Albemarle; sisters Ruth P. Fraley, Greensboro, Beatrice P. Fuller, Hendersonville; two grandchilsons; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, First Baptist Church, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Harold McDonald. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today, Hartsell Funeral Home.

Leslie Allen McFalls

Leslie Allen McFalls, 55, of Salisbury, died Friday (Feb. 9, 2001) in a fire at his home.

Born Jan. 16, 1946, in Rowan County, Mr. McFalls was a son of the late Louise Lesley and Otis McFalls.

An architect for Odell and Associates in Charlotte, he attended Salisbury city schools and served in the U.S.Air Force during the Vietnam War.

Survivors include son Nickolaus McFalls, Charlotte; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: None. The body will be cremated.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

Joseph Lester Outen

KANNAPOLIS — Joseph Lester Outen, 78, of 303 Echo Ave., died Saturday (Feb. 10, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Aug. 16,1922, in Cleveland County, Mr. Outen was a son of the late Lillian Hallman and Joseph Lester Outen. He retired from General Motors and was a charter member of Memorial United Methodist Church.

Survivors include wife Gladys “Scotty” Scott Outen.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Memorial United Methodist Church, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Otis Snow. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial, Kannapolis Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

 

John Alexander Owings

KANNAPOLIS — John Alexander Owings, 102, 1810 Concord Lake Road, formerly of South Rose Avenue, died Saturday (Feb. 10, 2001) at Transitional Health Services in Kannapolis.

Born June 15, 1898, in Iredell County, Mr. Owings was a son of the late Maria Elizabeth Misenheimer and Richard Marshall Turner Owings. Aretired employee of Cannon Mills, he was a charter member of Memorial Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elise Nix Owings, on March 1, 1983.

Survivors include daughters Sharon Lawrence, Martinsville, Va., and Mary Shearon, Forest City; brother Thurman T. “Buck” Owings; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Memorial Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Jim Harris and the Rev. Steve Davis. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Monday at the church.

Naomi Rymer Shepler

Naomi Rymer Shepler, 71, 520 Idlewood Drive, died Friday (Feb. 9, 2001) at her residence after an extended illness.

Born June 16, 1929, in Ellenboro, W. Va., Mrs. Shepler was a daughter of the late Fay Drucilla Brannon and Orval B. Rymer. Educated in the Pennsboro, W. Va. schools, she was a homemaker. She attended New Covenant Christian Fellowship.

Survivors include husband Kenneth W. Shepler, whom she married on Aug. 14, 1949; three sons, Thomas W. Shepler, Salisbury, Gregory W. Shepler, Lexington, and Randall A. Shepler, Singapore; daughter Debra D. Krieg, Charleston, W. Va.; sisters Evalena Moneypenny, Columbus, Ohio, Sylvia Freeland, Parkersburg, W. Va., and Nedra Paugh, Atlanta; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Vaughan Funeral Home, Parkersburg, W.Va. Burial, Masonic Cemetery, West Union.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Summersett Funeral Home.

Marcus Eli Sifford

FAITH — Marcus Eli Sifford, 73, of Faith, died Friday (Feb. 9, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after two week of serious illness.

Born March 13, 1927, in Rowan County, Mr. Sifford was a son of the late Nora Pauline Fraley and Eli Jacob Sifford.

He attended Rowan County schools and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and served in the U.S.Navy during World War II. He retired from Isenhour Brick and Tile Co.

A lifelong member of Shiloh United Church of Christ, he served there as a deacon, elder and trustee. He was a scout master for more than 42 years with Shiloh Troop No. 351, and received the Silver Beaver Award and the Life, Family and Church Award.

He was a charter member of Faith American Legion Post 327, a member of Shiloh Seniors and a life member of Faith Jaycees. He was a former mayor of the town of Faith and served on the town board. He served on the advisory board for East Rowan High and Faith Elementary schools and for 20 years was a special deputy with the Rowan County Sheriff’s Department. He was a volunteer firefighter for more than 20 years and was once an assistant chief.

Survivors include wife Rachel Cole Sifford, whom he married April 11, 1948; son John C. Sifford, Faith; daughters June Misenheimer, Salisbury, and Fail Fowler, Faith; brothers Franklin Sifford, Salisbury, and Jimmy and Douglas Sifford, both of Rockwell; sisters Rebecca Belk, Yvonne Misenheimer and Sylvia Hardin, all of China Grove, Janet Young, Jean Taylor, Wanda Sifford, Karen Wilhelm and Pamela Burris, all of Salisbury, Phyllis Erwin, Aurora, Colo., Jacqueline Allen, Lexington, and Gwen Morgan, Gold Hill; and five grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Shiloh United Church of Christ, Faith, conducted by the Rev. Lawrence Bolick and the Rev. Charles Sigler. Burial, church cemetery with military rites conducted by the Faith American Legion Post.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. today, Lyerly Funeral Home. Other times, the family will be at the home of Gail Fowler.

Frances Miller Sloop

Frances Miller Sloop, 72, 840 Patterson Road, died Friday (Feb. 9, 2001) at Spencer Health Care.

Born May 10, 1928, in Rockwell, Mrs. Sloop was a daughter of the late Della Beaver and Lester Miller. She graduated from Anna Costa High School in Washington, D.C.

She was a seamstress for Cannon Mills and attended Grace Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Mitchell Sloop, on June 28, 1996

Survivors include daughters Donna Peeler, Panama City, Fla., Myra Sechler and Patti Aldridge, both of Salisbury; sister Nell M. Miller, Salisbury; and six grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. today, Grace Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Woodrow F. Frick. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 3-4 p.m. today at the church. Other times the family will be at the home of Myra Sechler, 855 Patterson Road.

Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home in China Grove is in charge of arrangements.
