EAST SPENCER — The funeral will be Saturday for Essie Jeter Crawley, 96, Welder Street, who died Monday (Feb. 5, 2001) at Land’s Nursing Center.
Born March 23, 1904, in Union, S.C., Mrs. Crawley, a daughter of the late Michael and Mary Goudlock Jeter, was educated in the Union, S.C., schools. She was a homemaker. A member of New Zion’s Baptist Church, Salisbury, she was affiliated with the Pastor’s Aide.
Survivors include daughter Roxie Brown, Landis; foster daughter Jeannette Rudisell, Salisbury; sister Elizabeth Holmes, Orlando, Fla.; five grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

KANNAPOLIS — Roger Lewis Davis, 50, 1312 Browdis St., died Tuesday (Feb. 6, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born June 24, 1950, in Concord, Mr. Davis was a son of the late Lewis and Hazel Overcash Davis, was a graduate of A.L. Brown High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 16 years.
Survivors include daughter Sara Elizabeth Davis, Magnolia, Del.; son Jonathan Roger Davis, Magnolia,Del.; and sister Judith Davis Hill, Kannapolis.

The funeral will be Friday for Larry Wayne Holshouser, 52, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (Feb. 7, 2001) at Rowan RegionalMedical Center.
Born July 12, 1948, in Rowan County, Mr. Holshouser was a son of the late Clifford Bernard and Elizabeth Virginia Holshouser Holshouser. He was educated in the Rowan County schools, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and Pfeiffer University, Misenheimer.
He was a veterans of the U.S. Air Force and was self-employed. He was a member of Christiana Lutheran Church.
Survivors include wife Florencia “Flora” Lagasit Holshouser, whom he married May 20, 1972; brothers Clifford Bernard Holshouser Jr., Salisbury, Michael “Mickey” William Holshouser, Hunters-ville, and Donald Gene Holshouser, Rockwell; and sisters Joyce Ketchie and Judy Livengood, both of Salisbury, Sandra Taylor, Marietta, Ohio, and Peggy Owen, Asheboro.

Annie Mae Hupp, 94, died Tuesday (Feb. 6, 2001) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation after a period of declining health.
Born June 2, 1906, in Halifax County,Va., Miss Hupp was a daughter of the late Philip Thomas and Rosa Shapard Hupp. She was educated in the Halifax County schools. A retired practical nurse, she was a member of Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church.

CLEVELAND — Bernice “Bun” Viola Turner Jones, 69, 106 Brevard St., died Saturday (Feb. 3, 2001) at Davis Hospital, Statesville, after a week of illness.
Born March 13, 1931, in Rowan County, Mrs. Jones, a daughter of the late Harrison and Janie Hyde Turner, was a graduated of R.A.Clement High School. She retired from Blackwelder Restaurant and was a member of Third Creek AME Zion Church.
A daughter, Delores Turner, died in 1966.

MOORESVILLE — Nellie Parker Lackey, 80, Eden Gardens Nursing Center, died Tuesday (Feb. 6, 2001) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.
Born March 14, 1920, in IredellCounty, Mrs. Lackey was a daughter of the late Charles Lee and Nancy Lambert Parker. She had worked as a payroll clerk in the textile industry.
Her husband, Elmer Lackey, died in 1985.

Born July 25, 1951, in Haywood County, Tenn., Mrs. Latham was a daughter of Pearl Smith and Jewell R. English, Gates, Tenn. She was a homemaker and an employee of National Health Labs, Winston-Salem., where she worked as a medical technologist. She attended Faith Covenant Church, Concord.

John Quincy Steele
ADVANCE — John Quincy Steele, 76, formerly of the Advance community, died Monday (Feb. 5, 2001) at Winston-Salem Rehabilitation Center after a period of declining health.
Born in Davie County, Mr. Steele was a son of the late Forest McKinley and Blanche Steele. He was a graduate of Salisbury High School and received a certificate in auto body and fender repair from the Utilities Institute of Chicago.
In 1972, he formed the first Black American softball team from Davie County. Steele’s Body Shop’s team won league and tournament championships in Fork, Mocksville and Smith Grove. They also won the National Softball Association Black American State Championship in 1992.
Mr.Steele retired from J.P.Green Milling Co., Mocksville, after 50 years. A member of Redland Church of Christ for over 30 years, he was affiliated with the Davie Educational Union and assisted with the Masonic picnic as long as his health allowed.
His wife died Dec. 22, 1999.
Survivors include sons John Q. Steele Jr., Mocksville, and Terry Steele, Advance; daughters Alice L. Steele and Florence S. Simmons, both of Mocksville, and Dorothy S. Barker, Advance; brothers Carl Steele, Camp Spring, Md., and Minor Steele, Mocksville; sisters Ruth Lewis and Sylvia Steele, both of Mocksville, Mary Thompson, Tampa, Fla., and Odell Searle, LeVone Norwood and Azalea Carter, all of Maryland; and nine grandchildren.
