‘Bert’ Abernathy
ROCKWELL — Hubert “Bert” Coleman Abernathy, 81, Rockwell, died Monday (Feb. 5, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, of an apparent heart attack.
Born July 16, 1919, in Gaston County, Mr. Abernathy, a son of the late C.W. and Mary Ethel Ballard Abernathy, was educated in the Gaston County schools.
A veteran, he served during the Korean War. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1968.
He was a golf pro at Charles River County Club, Chestnut Hill, Mass., for 12 years and part owner of Little Harbor Country Club, Wareham, Mass. The former owner/operator of The TrophyHouse, Granite Quarry, he owned and operated BRSEnterprises.
A Baptist, he was a member of the PGA, Miller-Russell Post 112 American Legion, Vanoy-Sells Post 9134 VFW and Rockwell AMVETS.
Survivors include wife Mary Katherine Russell Abernathy; sons Robert Coleman Abernathy, Snellville, Ga., and Mark Houck Abernathy, Salisbury, Md.; sisters Margaret A. Nye, Concord, and Mabel A. Dosier,Lincolnton; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, conducted by a military chaplain. Military rites by Fort Bragg Military Honors Detail.

Lentz Monroe Almond
ALBEMARLE — Lentz Monroe Almond, 76, Albemarle, died Monday (Feb. 5, 2001) at University Hospital, Charlotte.
Born Jan. 5, 1925, in Stanly County, Mr. Almond was a son of the late Travis Monroe “T.M.” Almond and Rosanna Furr Almond. He was a graduate of Millingport High School and class valedictorian.
During World War II, he served in the Pacific Theatre with the U.S. Navy. He retired as a service manager from Suburban Propane.
A former member of Millingport Lion’s Club, he was a former president of PTOat Millington Elementary School and a board member at North Stanly High School. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, the SalemAdult Men’s Sunday School class and a former lay leader.
Survivors include wife Gladys Ruth Hall Almond; son Gary Travis Almond, Pinnacle; daughter Beverly Almond Johnson, Albemarle; brothers Travis J. Almond, Albemarle, and Aubrey P. Almond, Norwood; half sister Ethel Lee Morgan, Stanfield; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Jerry Lynn Bowers
ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Wednesday for Jerry Lynn Bowers, 45, 226 Williams Drive, who died Monday (Feb. 5, 2001) at his home.
Born April 7, 1955, in Rockwell, Mr. Bowers was a son of Viola Jeanette Brown Cook, Kure Beach, and the late James Harrison Bowers. He was a 1974 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School.
A truck driver, he was a member of Organ Lutheran Church.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Delores Wilson Bowers; daughter Alysha Wilson Bowers, of the home; brothers Sonny Bowers, Rockwell, Donnie Bowers, Gold Hill, and Jay Bowers, Badin Lake; and sister Joyce Bowers, Kure Beach.

Born Nov. 18, 1967, in Washington, D.C., Mr. Dallis, a son of the late Delores Dallis Moore, was educated in the Thomasville schools. He was a construction worker.

Ardell P. Gooden
LEXINGTON — Ardell Pegues Gooden, 95, formerly of Washington Avenue, died Saturday (Feb. 3, 2001) at Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
Born Dec. 19, 1905, in Chesterfield County, S.C., Mrs. Gooden was a daughter of the late David and Bessie Powe Pegues. She was a member of Union Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Johnny Jack Gooden, and daughter Willie Mae Hairston.
Survivors include seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Harry Lewis Hipp
The funeral will be Wednesday for Harry Lewis Hipp, 88, 2034 Woodleaf Road, who died Sunday (Feb. 4, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 21, 1912, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Hipp, a son of the late Charles Levi and Mary Ella Cress Hipp, attended the Rowan County schools. A lifelong farmer, he operated Milford Hills Dairy in the 1940s.
He was a member of First United Church of Christ and the Shorthorn Cattlemen’s Association.
His wife, Cora Maness Hipp, died May 9, 1946.
Survivors include sons Harry L. Hipp Jr. and John H. and George L. Hipp, all of Salisbury; niece reared in the home Hilda Shaver, Salisbury; great-niece reared in the home Ann Shaver Scott, Asheboro; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

J. Paul Leagans
MOCKSVILLE — Dr. J. Paul Leagans, 90, Wilkesboro Street, died Monday (Feb. 5, 2001) at his home.
A son of the late Granville and Camilla Collette Leagans, Mr. Leagans was born in Cana on Sept. 11, 1910. He received a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina State University in 1934.
He worked as a high school agriculture teacher, a county extension agent and an assistant state extension program leader and training specialist. He was on the faculty at NCSU for 20 years.
In 1949 he joined the graduate faculty at Cornell University, establishing a graduate program in extension and continuing education. He served for nearly 30 years. He was a consultant to the Ford and Rockefeller foundations and U.S. Agency for International Development and an adviser on extension and higher education.
A member of Mocksville Baptist Church, he was a Rotarian for over 50 years and a volunteer with Boys Scouts and the YMCA.
A daughter, Linda Sutcliffe, preceded him in death.
Survivors include wife of 67 years Mary Louise Lakey Leagans; sons John Leagans, Livingston, Texas, and William Leagans, Wood Dale, Ill.; sister Dorothy Marx, LaCrosse, Va.; brother Charlie Leagans, LaPlata, Md.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Lucille Sealey Lingle
GASTONIA —Lucille Sealey Lingle, 89, Gastonia, died Sunday (Feb. 4, 2001) at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
A native of Wake County, Mrs. Lingle was a daughter of the late Charlie Sealey and Daisey Belle Milligan Sealey. She was educated in the Rowan County schools and was a member of First Baptist Church, Gastonia. She retired from Cannon Mills in Salisbury after 51 years.
Her husband, Spencer Lewis Lingle, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughter Evelyn L. Adams, Gastonia; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Phillip Manuel Shook
MOORESVILLE — Phillip Manuel Shook, 60, Glenwood Drive, died Monday (Feb. 5, 2001) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 7, 1940, in Mooresville, Mr. Shook was a son of Florence Brackett Shook Stutts, Stonebridge Retirement Center, and the late David Manuel Shook. He was a 1959 graduate of Mooresville High School.
He retired in 1999 from Maintenance Supply, Huntersville, where he worked in the warehouse. A member of Fieldstone Presbyterian Church, he was an elder and deacon and the current clerk of the session.
He was a former member of the Cornelius Jaycees and had coached Little League baseball and basketball.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Mary Abernethy Shook, whom he married June 2, 1962; children Timothy Shook and Sherry Sawyer, both of Mooresville; brother Joel Shook, Cornelius; and two grandchildren.
