Amis Monroe Barker

LEXINGTON — Amis Monroe Barker, 66, 861 Phillips Road, died Sunday (Feb. 4, 2001) at Kate B.Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.

Born Sept. 2, 1934, in Swain County, Mr. Barker was a son of Pearl Queen Barker, Lexington, and the late Ottis M. Barker. A retired building contractor, he was a Baptist.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Jewel Templeton Barker; daughter Molly Barker Potts, Lexington; brothers Nevil and Buel Barker, both of Lexington; sisters Viola Anthony and Penny Evans, both of Lexington; stepmother Oma Bowers Barker, Lexington; and two grandsons.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Forest Hill Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Sam Harvey.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of Molly Barker Potts, 115 Redwood Lane.

Elwood C. Clayton

RICHFIELD — Elwood Clamon Clayton, 75, 24817 Miller Road, died Saturday (Feb. 3, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born May 29, 1925, in Stanly County, Mr. Clayton was a son of the late Ernest C. and Ina Hicks Clayton. Retired, he owned and operated Clayton’s Grocery.

He was a member of Richfield Baptist Church and Albemarle Lions Club and a member and past president of the Stanly County chapter of the Federation of the Blind.

Survivors include wife Maxine Miller Clayton; son Richard “Dick” Clayton, Norwood; daughter Jane Clayton Huneycutt, Albemarle; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 11 this morning at Richfield Baptist Church.The Rev.C. Eugene Carroll officiated. Burial was at Richfield Cemetery

The family will be at the home on Miller Road.

Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, was in charge.

Hugh Clayton Clifton

SPENCER — Hugh Clayton Clifton, 70, Spencer, died Sunday (Feb. 4, 2001) at his home.

Born June 25, 1930, in Galax, Va., Mr. Clifton was a son of the late Troy L. and Zina Hall Clifton. He was educated in the Galax, Va., schools.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during the Korean War. He was a retired sales representative.

Survivors include wife Yoshiko Sano Clifton, whom he married May 10, 1951; sons Hugh Clifton Jr., Salisbury, Jeffery Clifton, Woodleaf, and Vincent Clifton, New Bern; daughters Deborah C. Boone, Spencer, and Marcella C. Sockwell, Oxford; sisters Carmel C.Longley, Elkton, Va., and Constance C.White, Burlington; and 12 grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home chapel, Galax, Va. Burial, Felts Cemetery, Galax.

Visitation: None.

Rachael Turner Davis

Rachael Turner Davis, 86, 820 Klumac Road, formerly of Albemarle, Spencer and Raleigh, died Sunday (Feb. 4, 2001) at Salisbury Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Born Jan. 29, 1915, in Spencer, Mrs. Davis was a daughter of the late James Henry and Susan Agnes Miller Turner. She graduated fromSpencer High School and attended Virginia School of Nursing, Richmond, Va.

A piano player, she played for various churches and organizations. In 1991, she received the Governor’s State Volunteer award for providing music for senior citizens groups. She also played for devotions at various hospitals.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Sanford R. Davis, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Sandra Davis Plaks, Raleigh, and Miriam Davis, Newton; sister Edna Mae Turner Colvin, Joppa, Md.; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, chapel at St. John’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Carl R. Sachtleben. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 1-1:45 p.m. Tuesday in the church library.

Bryon Eugene Hatley

ALBEMARLE — Bryon Eugene Hatley, 41, 24734 N.C. Hwy. 73, died Sunday (Feb. 4, 2001) at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.

Born Sept. 27, 1959, in Stanly County, Mr. Hatley was a son of Hurley Gene and Ann Harwood Hatley of Albemarle. He was a 1977 graduate of North Stanly High School and a member of Salem United Methodist Church.

Employed by Coca Cola for 10 years and later with Royster, he was a farmer.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include paternal grandmother Louise Hatley, Albemarle.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Salem United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mark Denton. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, HartsellFuneral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of Ann Hatley, 24734 N.C. Hwy. 73, Millingport community.

Harry Lewis Hipp

Harry Lewis Hipp, 88, Salisbury, died Sunday (Feb. 4, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Kathleen M. Hobbs

MOORESVILLE — Kathleen Measmer Hobbs, 77, 732 Dogwood Lane, died Saturday (Feb. 3, 2001) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Born Aug. 5, 1923, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Hobbs, a daughter of the late James W. and Bessie Blackwelder Measmer, retired from Cannon Mills.

Her husband, Junius Albert Hobbs, died in 1987, and a son, Jerry Hobbs, died in 1992.

Survivors include sons Larry and Lathan Hobbs, both of Mooresville; daughters Frances Alexander, Sherrills Ford, and Kathy Ellis, Salisbury; brother June Measmer, Murphy; sister Emma Horton, Kannapolis; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Community Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. J.R. Speece. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Neill Funeral Home.

 

‘Mac’ McIntyre

WINSTON-SALEM — Matthew “Mac” McIntyre, 63, 700 McLean Ave., died Thursday (Feb. 1, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Born July 31, 1937, in Salisbury, Mr. McIntyre, a son of the late Archie and Nancy McIntyre, was a graduate of the Rowan County schools.

He retired fromMilestone Nuclear in Waterford, Conn. A veteran of the U.S.Navy, he was a member of American Legion Post 255, Lexington.

He was a former member of Shiloh Baptist Church, New London, Conn., where he was involved with various church organizations.

Survivors include son Matthew McIntyre Jr., Winston-Salem; daughters Shelia Crux, Bronx, N.Y., Jolanda L. Williams, High Point, and Nancy McIntyre, Greensboro; brother Clarence McIntyre, Lexington; and seven grandchildren.

Margaret E. Milligan

CLINTON, N.J. — Margaret E. Milligan, 89, Clinton, mother of Dora Jean Whitfield, Salisbury, N.C., died Sunday (Feb. 4, 2001) at Hunterdon Care Center, Flemington.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Clinton Presbyterian Church. Burial, Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, Martin Funeral Home, Clinton.

Myrtle Cline Patterson

KANNAPOLIS — Myrtle Elizabeth Cline Patterson, 93, 2495 Centergrove Road, died Sunday (Feb. 4, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born April 26, 1907, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Patterson, a daughter of the late Robert F. and Annie S. Cline, was educated in the Cabarrus County schools. She retired from Cannon Mills.

She was a member of Keller United Church of Christ and the VFWAuxiliary.

Her husband, Albert B. Patterson, died Nov. 14, 1963.

Survivors include son A.B. Patterson Jr., Landis; daughters Verna Wilkerson and Mildred P. Barringer, both of Kannapolis; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home chapel, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Robert Myers. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6:30-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Grover Roger Phillips

ALBEMARLE — Grover Roger Phillips, 56, 703 Bethany Road, died Sunday (Feb. 4, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 19, 1944, in Stanly County, Mr. Phillips was a son of Floyd Jackson and Esther Earnhardt Phillips of Albemarle. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church. He retired after 39 years from Wiscassett Mills, where he had worked as a machine overhauler.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife of 36 years Eula Jane Arey Phillips; son Nelson Roger Phillips, Albemarle; brother Lonnie Ray Phillips, Albemarle; and sisters Shirley Smith and Bonnie Troutman, both of Albemarle.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, Northside Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Larry Dennis. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory Mausoleum.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, HartsellFuneral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Bethany Road.

 

Cordelia Louise Walker

Cordelia Louise Walker, 89, 411 S. Grim St., died Sunday (Feb. 4, 2001) at the Laurel’s of Salisbury. She had been in declining health for several months and seriously ill for a week.

Born Dec. 4, 1911, in Mecklenburg County, Mrs. Walker was educated in the Mecklenburg County schools. She retired from Hefner VAMedical Center and was a member of Soldiers Memorial AMEZionChurch.

Her husband, Forney Walker, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Robert Jolly, Salisbury; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the home of granddaughter Cheryl Cuthbertson 212 S. Institute St., Salisbury.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Madolyn M. Yates

The funeral will be Tuesday for Madolyn McIntire Yates, 53, Salisbury, who died Saturday (Feb. 3, 2001) at her home after a year of declining health.

Born Jan. 1, 1948, in Rutherford County, Tenn., Mrs. Yates was a daughter of Robert E. McIntire of Stone Mountain, Ga., and the late Eleanor Foss McIntire and the stepdaughter of Elma McIntire of Stone Mountain,Ga.

She was educated in the Rowan County schools and attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the Department of Revenue School in Chapel Hill.

A business and personal property tax assessor for Rowan County for 22 years, she was a member of the North Carolina Assessors Association. She was also a member of Central Piedmont Business-Personal Property Appraiser’s Association where she was a former president and the current secretarytreasurer. She was a Baptist.

Survivors include husband, Allan Yates, whom she married Aug. 3, 1965; daughters Tammy Yates Snow, Mooresville, and Ginny Yates Alley, Salisbury; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday,Neel Road Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jerry P. Wilkes. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.
