Dorothy Wallace Aycoth

KANNAPOLIS — Dorothy Wallace Aycoth, 65, 518 Locust St., died Friday (Feb. 2, 2001) at her residence after 10 years of declining health.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Charles Bryan Bowyer

ROCKWELL — Charles Bryan Bowyer, 31, Rockwell, died Thursday (Feb. 1, 2001)at his residence.

Born Feb. 25, 1969, in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Bowyer was a son of Billie Shape Bowyer, Salisbury, and Charles Clinton Bowyer, Lexington. Educated in the Lexington schools, he was a carpenter for D.C. Construction. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Lexington.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include stepbrother David Huneycutt, Cary; stepmother Ann Bowyer, Lexington; stepsister Leigh Huneycutt, Lexington; paternal grandmother Myrtle L. Bowyer, Salisbury; and sisters Beverly B. Coppley, Statesville, Christina B. Grooms, Salisbury, and Elizabeth I. Bowyer, Cary.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Larry Summey, pastor, Franklin Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. Jeff Coppley, pastor, Monticello United Methodist Church, Statesville. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of mother Billie Bowyer, 220 Greenway Drive, Colonial Downs.

Douglas Cleveland

SPENCER — Douglas Wade Cleveland, 69, 200 Gobble St., died Friday (Feb. 2, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Sullivan-King Mortuary, Anderson, S.C., is in charge.

 

Mariola Crawford

COOLEEMEE — Mariola Crawford, 83, formerly of Ruffin Street, died Thursday (Feb. 1, 2001) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Oct. 5, 1917, in Davie County, she was a daughter of the late J.G. and Lola Carter Crawford. A retired teacher in the Davie County schools, she was a member of Cooleemee United Methodist Church, where she served as church organist and choir director for many years.

She was also a member of the Mocksville Chapter of the Eastern Star, where she also served as organist. She received the Lifetime Appreciation Award from the Davie County Arts Council.

Survivors include brother John Grier Crawford Jr., Harrisburg, Va.; sisters Amy C. Myers, Cooleemee, Frances C. Wainio, Marblehead, Ohio, and Edna C. Harding, Charlotte.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Cooleemee United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Joe Collins and the Rev. Sandra Martin. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home, Mocksville.

Puritt L’amond Dallis

Puritt L’amond Dallis, 33, 1710 Long St., Apartment 2, died Thursday (Feb. 2, 2001) at High Point Regional Medical Center, High Point.

Ethel Fisher

ROCKWELL — Ethel Fisher, formerly of Rockwell, died Friday (Feb. 2, 2001) at Autumn Care of Salisbury.

Powles Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Mary Elizabeth FitzGerald

Mary Elizabeth FitzGerald, 94, formerly of the Spanish Arms Apartments, died Wednesday (Jan. 31, 2001) in Boca Raton, Fla., where she made her home at The Fountains.

Born Jan. 12, 1907, in Johnstown, Pa., she was a daughter of the late William Francis and Elsie Irene Bergmann. She was educated at the Indiana State Normal School and Misercordia College.

She was formerly an elementary school teacher in Pittsburgh and elementary reading supervisor in Wyoming Valley West School district in Kingston, Pa. She had served as state and local president of Delta Kappa Gamma and state and local president of the Pennsylvania State Educators Association. She was also a member of the National Educators Association.

She was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., where she served as religious education director and was a past president of the Episcopal Church Women. While living in Salisbury, she was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, where she was also active in the Episcopal Church Women.

Her husband, James FitzGerald, died June 27, 1983.

Survivors include sons Jerry FitzGerald, Tolland, Conn., John William FitzGerald, Warren, Ohio, and G. Richard FitzGerald, Boca Raton, Fla.; daughters Mary Elizabeth “Pat” McGuire, Salisbury; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Monday, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Stephen Morris, pastor. Burial, City Memorial Park.

Visitation: The family will see friends following the burial and at other times will be at the home of daughter Pat McGuire, 1287 W. Henderson St.

Ruth Patterson

KANNAPOLIS — Ruth Cline Patterson, 97, 6655 Goldfish Road, died Friday (Feb. 2, 2001) at Five Oaks Nursing Center, Concord.

Born April 17, 1903, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Patterson was a daughter of the late Robert F. and Annie Rodger Cline. She had retired from the sewing room at Cannon Mills in 1967 after 36 years with the company. She was a member of Concord Lake Baptist Church.

Her husband, Otha Alexander Patterson, died in 1965, and a daughter, Annie Bernice Patterson, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Grace Aldridge, Marjorie Moffitt and Faye Sartain, all of Kannapolis; sons Claude Patterson,Kannapolis, and Hugh “Buddy” Patterson, Faith; sister Myrtle Patterson, Kannapolis; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 45 great-great-grandchildren; and six great-great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Ralph Hager and the Rev. Terry Brown. Burial, Keller United Church of Christ.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Claude Patterson, 6660 Goldfish Road, Kannapolis.

John Douglas Sands

MOCKSVILLE —John Douglas Sands, 68, Spring Street, died Thursday (Feb. 1, 2001)at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Sept. 22, 1932, in Detroit, Mr. Sands was a son of the late Robert Malen and Margaret Elizabeth Sands. Retired from Crown Wood Products, he attended the Clemmons Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

His wife, Sarah Jane Beaver Sands, died Dec. 15, 1995.

Survivors include son Doug Sands, Mocksville; and sisters Rita Diebel and Vyvyan Weiss, both of Tucson, Ariz.

Services:1 p.m. Monday, Eaton Funeral Home, conducted by Bishop Gary Delozier. Burial, Rose Cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.

 

Gladys Tyner Scarborough

KANNAPOLIS — Gladys Tyner Scarborough, 73, 716 Evelyn Ave., died Monday (Jan. 29, 2001)at her residence.

Born April 2, 1927, in Chesterfield County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Herdy and Effie M. Tyner. She had been employed as a nursing assistant with Pathways Home Care, Concord, for the past 10 years.

Survivors include sons Robert Scarborough, Kannapolis, and Ronald Scarborough, Concord; sisters Millie Tyner Burgess, Kannapolis, and Agnes Wilkerson, Ruby, S.C.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Services: Graveside, 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Steve Sexton.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Sunday, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

 

Kenneth Ray Scott

CHINA GROVE — Kenneth Ray Scott, 28, China Grove, died Friday (Feb. 2, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem.

Linn-Honeycutt, China Grove, is in charge.

 

Manuel ‘Red’Thomas

FAITH — Manuel Lee “Red” Thomas, 76, 3028 Cemetery Drive, died Thursday (Feb. 1, 2001)at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born May 4, 1924, in Stanly County, he was the son of the late Manuel Lee and Dora Lee Harrington Thomas. Educated in Stanly County, Mr. Thomas had formerly worked for the N.C. Department of Transportation. He later retired from the maintenance department of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Mr. Thomas was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of Faith American Legion Post 327.

His wife, Doris Shutt Thomas, died June 5, 1984.

Survivors include sons Ricky L. and Larry Eugene Thomas, both of Salisbury, and Jimmy Dean Thomas, Faith; daughter Renee Barker, York, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Faith Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Keith Copeland and the Rev. Gene Sides. Burial, church cemetery, with graveside rites by Faith American Legion Post 327. Legion members will be seated as a group.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt, China Grove. At other times the family will be at the residence in Faith.
