CONCORD — The undefeated A.L. Brown girls basketball team didn’t have anyone get the Most Valuable Player trophy in the first annual Northeast Medical Invitational Saturday night at Jay Robinson High School but coach Doug Wilson got something better.
The championship.
Elise Stanback scored 17 points to lead the Wonders to a 54-42 victory over Northwest Cabarrus.
The Trojans got the MVP award, which went to Christy Killians.
“We dominated the glass and played good solid defense,” Wilson said of his 9-0 team, which led 28-18 at halftime.
His first order of business was figuring out a way to stop Killians, who had games of 30 and 23 ppoints coming into the title game.
“We played a 3-2 zone and got out on them,” Wilson said. “She scored 18 tonight.”
Stanback also had a bundle of rebounds and steals, according to her coach.
The Wonders will move straight into North Piedmont Conference play Wednesday against a talented Statesville team.
“It feels great,” Wilson said of his undefeated record. “But this part of the year has come to an end. I think we’re in a real tough league.”
Especially considering A.L. Brown has to meet West Rowan two nights after Statesville and has undefeated East Rowan later on the schedule.
Tamika Powell chipped in with 13 points and 14 rebounds while Michelle Crosby had nine points and Kesha Johnson seven.
In the boys title game, A.L. Brown lost its first game of the season in a squeaker, 63-62 to Scott Brewer’s Central Cabarrus Vikings.
