Jessie Lee Cherry
Jessie Lee Swift Cherry, 63, of 419 E. Liberty St., died Thursday (Dec. 27, 2001) at her residence after a period of declining health.
Born Sept. 29, 1938, in Salisbury, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Rilla Swift. She was a graduate of J.C.Price High School.
A homemaker, she was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and the Senior Choir.
Survivors include her fiancee, Hugh Walker, of the home; daughter Betty Lowery, Salisbury; niece Katie Wright, Salisbury, and nephews, Willie and Charles Wright, all of whom were reared in the home; and one grandchild.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Macedonia Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. W.T. Jackson, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Monday before the service at the church.

Virginia Holt Eanes
Virginia Holt Eanes, 77, of Salisbury, died Friday (Dec. 28, 2001) after a period of declining health.
Born May 20, 1924, in Danville, Va., she was a graduate of the Schoolfield, Va., schools. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was retired from Dan River Mills.
Her son, Ricky Douglas Eanes, and a grandson both preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband, Vernon Douglas Eanes, whom she married July 2, 1955; sons Jerry Edward Myers, Danville, Va., and Randal Daren Eanes, Salisbury; brother Wallace Holt, Danville, Va.; sisters Myra Campbell, Hampton, Va., and Nancy Hamlet, Danville, Va.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Service: A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. today at Brookhill Memorial Gardens in Rockwell. The Rev. Allen Holder, pastor of Sharon Baptist Church, Danville, Va., will officiate.
Visitation: 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. today before the service, at Lyerly Funeral Home. Other times, the family will be at the residence.
Martin Eckley Gainey
Martin Eckley Gainey, 53, of Salisbury, died Friday (Dec. 28, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born Aug. 19, 1948, in New Kensington, PA, he was the son of Jacqueline Eckley Gainey Cornett, South Hill, Va. and the late Robert Martin Gainey.
A 1966 graduate of Roosevelt High School, Yonkers, N.Y., he attended Washington & Jefferson College and graduated from Central Piedmont College. He was a retired industrial electrician and a substance abuse counselor with the North Carolina Department of Corrections.
A former member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Charlotte, he was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. He was a member of the VFW.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a stepfather, Col. Alan Cornett, South Hill, Va. He is also survived by his wife of 19 years, Barbara Eves Gainey; daughters Sarah Gainey and Christa Gainey, both of the home; brother Grant Gainey, Cary; twin sister, Megan Gainey, Salisbury, sisters Lauren Gainey, Old Wick, N.J., Shannon Gainey Matta, Memphis, Tenn., and Cadence Smith, Lansdale, Penn.
Services: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Marvin B. Aycock Jr. The body will be cremated.
Visitation: The family will be at the parish house after the service. Other times, they will be at the residence.

Cpl. Bear Isaac Miller
ROCKWELL — Cpl. Bear Isaac Miller, 22, of 5506 Phaniels Church Road, died unexpectedly Saturday (Dec. 29, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Miller was on Christmas leave with his family at the time of his death. He had been on active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps, stationed in 29 Palms California.

Mildred W. Moore
Mildred W. Moore, 80, of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., died Thursday (Dec. 27, 2001) in Houston, Texas, while visiting her grandchildren for the holidays.
A native of Salisbury, where she graduated from Boyden High School, Mrs. Moore is a former member of Milford Hills Lions Club and had worked with Salisbury Social Services for a number of years.
She was preceded in death by daughter Brenda Marie Moore and son Paul A. Moore, Jr.
Survivors include husband Paul A. Moore of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; son Ron Moore of Islamorada, Fla.; sister Janet Agner of Salisbury; brothers Harold, Rovie, Rudy and Ross Williams, all of Salisbury; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Burial in Chapel Hills Memory Gardens.

Harvey Tarlton Jr.
KANNAPOLIS — Harvey Hollis Tarlton Jr., 83, pf 220 West 21st St., died Friday (Dec. 28, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Born April 28, 1918, in Anson County, he was the son of the late Harvey Hollis and Martha Medley Sikes Tarlton. He was educated in the Anson County schools and a graduate of Burnsville High School.
He retired fromCannon Mills in the Bleachery Department. He was a charter member of New Hope Lutheran Church and a member of VFW Post 8989.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine Eagle Tarlton; daughters Annette Sloop and Pat Glenn, both of Kannapolis; brothers Ward G. Tarlton, Wadesboro, and John P. Tarlton, Atlanta; sister Francis T. Webb, Shelby; and two grandchildren.
