Thursday, Salisbury’s girls basketball team bombed against Davie County and it meant defeat.
Friday, Hornet sharpshooter Jamie Seay bombed and it meant victory.
The first four baskets by Seay, a 5-foot-4 junior, were 3-pointers and, along with the always-dominating Shayla Fields, led Salisbury to a convincing 41-25 win over neighbor North Rowan in a Sam Moir Christmas Classic consolation game.
Salisbury improved to 2-7 while North is still winless at 0-9.
After three lackluster quarters that saw the Hornets up just 26-21, Seay’s most important basket may have been her only two-pointer, a layup, that gave Salisbury its first double-digit lead at 34-23. The Hornets coasted home from there. But Seay’s performance stood out.
“Jamie was able to light it up,” beamed Salisbury coach Jennifer Shoaf. “She must have liked these goals, I guess. I hope it carries over to conference.”
Fields, a freshman, was her usual self, scoring 19, including 9-of-11 from the free throw line, including 5-of-7 in the fourth.
“Fields is tough,” sighed North coach Mike White. “She’s a heck of an athlete to deal with for four years.”
White was not happy afterward. His team had watched Salisbury lose to Davie the previous night and came in confident. Too confident.
“That might have been the worse thing that could’ve happened to us,” he said.
Crystal Craige led North with 10 points, but only two after halftime.
