Miller W. Cavin

CHARLOTTE — Miller W. Cavin, 92, 3420 Shamrock Drive, died Friday (Dec. 28, 2001) at Asbury Care Center in Charlotte.

Born March 31, 1909, in Landis, he was the son of the late Katie Rice and John P. Cavin.

Mr. Cavin graduated from Landis High School and Kings Business College. He worked at Mutual Savings and Loan in Charlotte. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include wife Thelma Jones Cavin; and sisters Margaret Cavin, Landis, and Eloise Cavin, Charlotte.

Services: Graveside 3 p.m. Sunday, Greenlawn Cemetery, led by the Rev. Graham NaHouse.

Visitation: None.

Neil Alexander Hatley

The funeral will be Sunday for Neil Alexander Hatley, 81, Salisbury, who died Thursday (Dec. 27, 2001) at his home.

Born April 28, 1920, in Salisbury, Mr. Hatley, a son of the late William Alexander and Betty Clarke Hatley, was a graduate of Spencer High School.

He retired after 40 years from Southern Railway, where he worked as a locomotive engineer. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Spencer.

Survivors include wife Frances Nussman Hatley, whom he married Oct. 10, 1942; son Michael Neil Hatley, Boring, Ore.; daughter Martha H. Smith, Salisbury; brother William C. “Bill” Hatley, Spencer; one granddaughter; two step-granddaughters; and two step-great-granddaughters.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Rodney Hagans, pastor, Central United Methodist Church, Spencer. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Polly Huffstetler

The funeral will be Sunday for Pauline Cody “Polly” Huffstetler, 70, Salisbury, who died Thursday (Dec. 27, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born March 3, 1931, in Kings Mountain, Mrs. Huffstetler, a daughter of the late Avery James and Eunice Tate Cody, was educated in the Kings Mountain schools.

A secretary at Knox Middle School, she retired in 1993 from the Rowan-Salisbury Schools. She was a member of Franklin Presbyterian Church and Quilter Club.

Survivors include husband Bob L. Huffstetler, whom she married July 31, 1948; son Michael L. “Monte” Huffstetler, Cornelius; and sister Mildred C. Smith, Bessemer City.

Services: 4 p.m. Sunday, Franklin Presbyterian Church, conducted by Dr. Larry Summey. The body will be placed in the church at 3:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Josephine Ramsue

STATESVILLE — Josephine R. Graham Ramsue, 83, 219 Brookview Road, died Thursday (Dec. 27, 2001) at Iredell Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 20, 1918, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Blanche G. and John Edward McGee.

Mrs. Ramsue was educated in Rowan County. She was a housewife. She was a member of Knox Grove Baptist Church in Cleveland, where she was a member of the usher board, a Sunday school teacher, missionary, deaconess and treasurer of the treasury.

Her husband James Franklin Ramsue, died Dec. 16, 1989; and her daughter, Mary Ramsue, died in 1950.

Survivors include daughters Rosea M. and Lula “Lulu” Ramsue and Margaret “Frankie” Scott, all of Statesville; sisters Dr. Zepihelia Darby, Camden, S.C., Irene DosSanto, of Queens, N.Y,. and Elizabeth Watts; Howard Beach, N.Y.; grandchildren reared in the home Crystal Ramsue, Statesville, Nikkie Ramsue, Harmony, and Senior Airman E-4 Keesha Ramsue, Charlotte; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Knox Grove Baptist Church, Cleveland, conducted by the Rev. James Milsap, pastor, and the Rev. Robert L. Coleman. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 2 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Davis and Mangum in Statesville is in charge.

 

Thelma Shrewsbury

Thelma Loleta Miles Shrewsbury, 89, Salisbury, died Thursday (Dec. 27, 2001) at her residence after a period of declining health and serious illness for the past three weeks.

Born Feb. 9, 1912, in Kimball, W.Va., she is the daughter of the late Sarah Elizabeth Wirt Miles and Asa Taylor Miles.

She was educated in the West Virginia schools.

Mrs. Shrewsbury was a homemaker and retired after 18 years from Cannon Mills Swink Plant. She was a member of Morlan Park Church of God for more than 50 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband Arnold Luck Shrewsbury Sr., who died Sept. 23, 1996, and son Daniel Gerald Shrewsbury, who died in 1991.

Survivors include sons Arnold L. and Paul J. Shrewsbury, both of Salisbury; daughter Elizabeth Shrewsbury Lawson, Salisbury; sisters Elva Lockhart, Bluefield, Va., and Stalle Poff, Bluewell, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and seven great- great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Lyerly Funeral Home chapel, led by the Rev. Brian Mcmasters, pastor of Morlan Park Church of God. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell.

Visitation: 2 to 3 p.m. today at the funeral home.
