Rowan County Register of Deeds Bobbie M. Earnhardt will be seeking her third term in the upcoming election.
“I enjoy the job,” said Earnhardt. “I have a good staff and they do a great job. I want to continue.”
Earnhardt, 54 , has worked in the office since 1985 and headed the office since 1992.
A Democrat, she has successfully bucked the local Republican tide in her previous two campaigns. She is now the longest serving Democratic office holder in the county.
In the last election, she swamped Republican challenger Penny Rowland, a real estate agent and wife of former county commissioner Dave Rowland.
She credits her success at the polls to the good job her staff does and her continuing efforts to have a consumer-friendly office.
When hired in the Register of Deeds office in 1985, she was the 10th employee. The office handled an average of 60 land documents a day.
“We still have 10 employees and we average 185 to 200 documents a day,” said Earnhardt, repeating a story she tells often to illustrate how much the work has increased, and how efficient the staff is.
“My main objective is to serve all the citizens of Rowan County as efficiently and as courteously as possibly,” said Earnhardt.
And she has plans to make more information available online through the county Web site.
In 1992, she was tapped by the Democratic Party to fill the unexpired term of Jean Ramsey, who retired.
In 1994, she won her first term outright, defeating challenger Thomas L. Smith.
She and her husband, Oron, a teacher at South Rowan High School, are residents of Old Cress Road. They have three children, Dale, Laura and Hope.
A Lutheran, she has been active in Grace Lutheran Church.
Earnhardt is active in several state and national and international organizations related to the Register of Deeds and has held several regional and state offices.
