Vandalism at mall raises security concerns

SALISBURY POST

I am writing to ask for help from shoppers and employees of the Salisbury Mall. There have been several incidents of vandalism to cars parked in the mall parking lot. On Nov. 11, the tires were slashed on 17 vehicles, totaling approximately $3,500 just in tires, not counting towing and other charges. On Monday, Nov. 10, windows were broken out in three cars, with radios and other valuables stolen totaling approximately $2,000.

These episodes of vandalism make shoppers feel at risk every time they shop at the mall. For mall employees, however, there is a daily risk. In fact, some employees fell victim in both of the above incidents. If there were security cameras in place on the building, better lighting and a guard patrolling, this could be a deterrent to thieves.

Fortunately, the damages so far have been limited to property. Unfortunately, a decline in the economy is often accompanied by a rise in the overall crime rate. Implementing more safety measures would be a proactive approach to improve the personal safety of all who frequent Salisbury Mall; perhaps this is a better option than waiting for more drastic offenses (such as assaults on people) to force authorities to take further action.

Please, if you feel the same about safety contact Salisbury Police Chief Chris Herring at 638-5333 and mall security, Steven Keels, at 637-7467. I am contacting these authorities and hope that everyone who reads this letter will do the same.
