Clara S. Crawford

MOCKSVILLE — Clara S. Crawford, 81, formerly of 201 Neely St., died Monday (Dec. 24, 2001) at Autumn Care Nursing Home.

Survivors include brothers Conard and Walter Smoot Jr., both of Mocksville; two grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Mocksville Second Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Leach. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation:Thirty minutes before the service.

Mack Henry Culp

Mack Henry Culp, 66, 519 Charlotte Drive, Charlotte, died Tuesday (Dec. 25, 2001) at the VA Hospital in Asheville.

He was born in Stanly County.

Services: Graveside, 1 p.m. Friday, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery; military rites by Stanly County DAV.

Visitation:6-8 p.m. Thursday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord. At other times, the family will be at the home.

Ralph James Hall

CLEVELAND —Ralph James Hall, 68, 705 E. Main St., died Monday (Dec. 24, 2001) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation of Salisbury. He had been in declining health for a year and seriously ill for several weeks.

Born April 2, 1933, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Cora Wood and Ralph A. Hall. He was educated in the Rowan County Schools, graduating from R.A. Clement High School.

He was formerly employed as a bus driver with Campus Coach Bus of New York, and later worked for several years with Mitchell & Fair Funeral Service.

Mr. Hall was a member of Third Creek AME Zion Church and was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include sons Walter E. Hall, Salisbury, and J. Douglas Hall, Mooresville; sisters Ada Hall-Stockton and Ruby H. Sifford, both of Cleveland, and Dorothy H. Midgett, Greensboro; and three grandchildren.

Florence Q. Kenny

Florence Marie Quinn Kenny, 81, Salisbury, died Monday (Dec. 24, 2001) at home following a brief illness.

Born May 27, 1920, in Queens, N.Y., Mrs. Kenny was a daughter of the late Richard M. and Mary E. Fogarty Quinn. Educated in the Queens, N.Y., schools, she graduated from John Adams High School.

A homemaker for years, she later retired from Nassau County Medical Center in Long Island, N.Y., where she was an emergency room administration clerk.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Holy Rosary Society in New York and the Sacred Heart Society in Salisbury. She was secretary/treasurer of her bowling league.

Her husband, Thomas Francis Joseph Kenny, died Nov. 8, 1994.

Survivors include sons Thomas Kenny, Miller Place, N.Y., Richard Kenny, North Bellmore, N.Y., and Kevin Kenny, Monroe, N.Y.; daughters Loretta Griffin, Lexington, Joanne Kenny, Santa Fe, N.M., and Mary Kenny Galliger, Philadelphia, Penn.; brothers Richard Quinn and Edward Quinn, both of Long Island, N.Y.; sisters Agnes Smith, Chicago, Ill., and Theresa Anglim, Norfolk, Va.; and 13 grandchildren.

Services:10 a.m. Friday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, conducted by the Rev. John Putnam, pastor. Burial, Salisbury National Cemetery.

Visitation:3-4 p.m. and 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Lyerly Funeral Home.

Frances J. Lowery

The funeral will be Thursday for Frances “Big Mama” Jackson Lowery, 75, 1520 Maxwell St. She died Sunday (Dec. 23, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.

Born Oct. 31, 1926, in Monroe, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Osbey and Mattie Sue Tillman Jackson. She graduated from Walker Parker High School in Monroe, Ga., and received her certified nursing certificate from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. She was a retired employee of the VA Medical Center.

A member of First Calvary Baptist Church, she was a member of the Usher Board, Missionaries Unit 2, the Royal Ambassadors Club and Eastside Community Club.

Her husband, Charles Lowery, and son Joseph Banks preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Carlos and Tyrone Lowery, both of Winston-Salem, David Lowery, Hickory, and Leonard Lowery, Salisbury; daughters Shirley Moses, Atlanta, and Betty Branch and Pamela Hoyle, both of Salisbury; stepdaughter Gertrude Watson, Salisbury; brother Howard Jackson, Atlanta; sisters Elizabeth Peters and Geneva Brown, both of Monroe; 22 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, First Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Leamon Brown officiating. Burial, U.S. National Cemetery, Hefner VA Medical Center.

Visitation: 12:30 p.m. Thursday, First Calvary Baptist Church. The remainder of the time, the family will be at the home of son Leonard Lowery, 526 Gold Hill Drive.

Grace Patterson Mills

Grace Patterson Mills, 96, of Queens, N.Y., died Sunday (Dec. 23, 2001) at Chapin Home for the Aged in Jamaica, N.Y.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Mount Tabor Presbyterian Church, Cleveland, conducted by Bishop Wayne Brown and the Rev. Clyde Cowan Jr. Burial, church cemetery.

Thomas D. Moore

Thomas Donald Moore, 72, 209 Ackert Ave., died Sunday (Dec. 23, 2001) at home.

Born Nov. 28, 1929, in Rowan County, Mr. Moore was the son of the late Thomas Holland and Bessie Trexler Moore.

A graduate of China Grove High School, he was a U.S. Air Force veteran, retiring after 20 years. He worked for Litton Co. until retiring.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. He was a member of Amvets of Rockwell, VFW Post 3006, Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post, Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge 576, the Scottish Rite, Oasis Temple of the Shrine and Elks Club.

Survivors include sons Ronald Moore, Victorville, Calif., and Michael Moore, Salisbury; daughters Linda Struebing, Laurel Springs, and Brenda Norton, Victorville, Calif.; sisters Bonnie Barrow, Salisbury, and Charlotte Cooper, Granite Quarry; and six grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 1 p.m. Friday, U.S. National Cemetery, conducted by the VA Medical Center chaplain; military honors by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Summersett Funeral Home.

 

Virginia S. Poole

Virginia Swink Poole, 87, Salisbury, died Tuesday (Dec. 25, 2001) at Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks after being seriously ill for one week.

Born May 29, 1914, in Salisbury, Mrs. Poole was the daughter of the late Charles Preston and Florence Ludwick Swink. Educated in Salisbury City Schools and a graduate of Boyden High School, she was a homemaker. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Arcadia, Fla.

Her husband, Harold Benjamin Poole Sr., died Aug. 31, 1999.

Survivors include son Harold B. Poole Jr., Salisbury; and brother Charlie Swink, Salisbury.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by Dr. Larry Summey, minister, Franklin Presbyterian Church. Burial, U.S. National Cemetery.

Visitation: None.

 

Ethel M. Reese

Ethel Marie Reese, 66, Salisbury, died Tuesday (Dec. 25, 2001), at home.

Evergreen Cremation Services is in charge.

 

Kathleen J. Rymer

ROCKWELL — Kathleen Josey Rymer, 77, Rockwell, died Tuesday (Dec. 25, 2001) at home.

Born May 8, 1924, in Rowan County, Mrs. Rymer was the daughter of John and Laura Catherine Bostian Josey. She was educated in Rowan County Schools. She worked at Cannon Mills Plant No. 1 for 27 and retired from Fiber Industries in 1988 after 16 years. She was a member of Organ Lutheran Church and the Organ Lutheran Church Missionary Society.

Her husband, Millard Glenn Rymer, died Nov. 20, 1997. Her son, Millard Glenn “Buddy”Rymer, died Dec. 22, 1994.

Survivors include daughters Judy R. Poston and Kay R. Grant, both of Salisbury; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Organ Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. John E. Pless, pastor. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home.

Mable G. Winecoff

Mable Ruth Goodnight Winecoff, 1915 Mooresville Road, died Tuesday (Dec. 25, 2001) at Carillon Assisted Living Center. She had been in declining health for six months.

Born Dec. 13, 1921, in Rowan County, Mrs. Winecoff was the daughter of the late Arnold McBride and Irene Sifford Goodnight. Educated in Rowan County Schools, she retired from Norman’s. She and her late husband ran several businesses in Salisbury, including Bill’s Bakery and Roy’s Rhythm Ranch.

Her husband, Roy William Winecoff Sr., died Feb. 9, 1982.

Survivors include sons Roy William “Bill” Winecoff Jr. and Terry Mack Winecoff, both of Salisbury, and Harvey Everett Winecoff, Oklahoma; daughters Kay W. Allen, Mocksville, Brenda W. Windsor and Peggy W. House, both of Mooresville, and Barbara W. Kirk, Salisbury; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Carriker. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation:6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of son Bill Winecoff, 1965 Cauble Road.

John H. Zimmerman

GEORGETOWN, Del. — John Harold Zimmerman Sr., 74, Cokesbury Road, died Monday (Dec. 24, 2001) at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford, Del. after a heart attack.

Born in Salisbury, N.C., Mr. Zimmerman was a son of the late Ernest L. and Myrtle Graham Zimmerman. He had worked as a pipe fitter out of Local 782, retiring in 1991. He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge 2458 and Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include wife Ruby Cauble Zimmerman; son John H. Zimmerman Jr., Rehoboth Beach; daughters Elaine Z. Grant and Bonnie Sue Kern, both of Georgetown; brother Bobby L. Zimmerman, Salisbury, N.C.; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Thursday, Watson-Yates Funeral Home, Seaford, conducted by the Rev. Diane Melson. Burial, Odd Fellows Cemetery, Seaford.

Visitation: One hour before the service at the funeral home.
