Dr. Kyle E. Black Sr.

Dr. Kyle Emerson Black Sr., 86, of Salisbury, died Friday (Dec. 21, 2001), at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born March 28, 1915, in Piney Creek, Dr. Black was a son of the late Dr. Oscar Reid and Mollie Edwards Black. He was educated at Landis High School, Oakridge Military Academy, Duke University and the University of Michigan Medical School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II with the Surgical 6th Evacuation Hospital and receiving a Bronze Star.

He was a retired surgeon, practicing from 1949 until 1987 in Salisbury. He was chief of staff at Rowan Memorial Hospital, past president of Merchants and Farmers Bank in Landis and board director for First Charter Bank. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

His wife, Helen Apps Black, died July 15, 1994.

Survivors include sons Dr. William R. “Bill” Black, Salisbury, Dr. Kyle E. Black Jr., Durham, and Dr. John Black, Wilmington; daughter Pamela A. Black, Light House Point, Fla.; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Services: Private funeral services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, conducted by the Rev. John Putnam, pastor, and the Rev. Thomas Clements, former pastor.

Visitation: None.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

Francis L. Cauble

Francis Louise Cauble, 78, formerly of the Yadkin House, died Friday (Dec. 21, 2001), at the W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center. She had been in declining health for five years.

Born Aug. 18, 1923, in Salisbury, Miss Cauble was the daughter of the late Lewis and Myrtle Curlee Cauble. Educated in Salisbury city schools, she graduated from Boyden High School. She was a U.S. Army veteran and was employed by the VA Medical Center before retiring.

Survivors include brother Billy S. Curlee of Greensboro.

Services: Graveside, 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Chestnut Hill Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Snipes.

Visitation:6:30-8 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

Arlie N. Dellinger

KANNAPOLIS — Arlie Nesby Dellinger, 68, formerly of 2003 Central Drive, died Friday (Dec. 21, 2001), at Big Elm Nursing Center.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Whitley’s Funeral Home. Arrangements are pending.

 

Pearl Greene Evans

Pearl Greene Evans, 82, 1355 St. Luke’s Church Road, died Thursday (Dec. 20, 2001) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte. She had been in declining health for more than a year.

Born Feb. 16, 1919, in Union S.C., Mrs. Evans was a daughter of the late Robert A. and Cleo Penland Green. She attended Union schools. She owned and operated Evans Ceramics Shop in Spencer and taught ceramics at the Rufty-Holmes Senior Center and Salisbury Recreation Department for a number of years. She was a member of Central Church of Christ.

Her husband, Furman Henry Evans, died Nov. 3, 1968, and a son, Bobby Austin Greene, died Dec. 9, 1960.

Survivors include daughter Elizabeth Evans Bean, Salisbury; brother Robert Austin Greene, Rutherfordton; sisters Mary Greene Jones, Winder, Ga., and Frances Green Lindley, Rock Hill, S.C.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by Chris Townsend and Chris Hutson. Burial, City Memorial Park.

Visitation:7-9 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Elizabeth Bean, 1355 St. Luke’s Church Road.

Garnelle H. Hilliard

Garnelle Helton Hilliard, 78, of Salisbury, died Friday (Dec. 21, 2001), at Rowan Regional Medical Center. She had been ill for two weeks.

Born June 29, 1923, in Rutherford County, Mrs. Hilliard was a daughter of the late Ed and Maude Hendrix Helton. Educated in Gaston County schools, she was a retired nurse and had worked as an operating room nurse at Locke Rabon VA Medical Center in Baltimore, Md. She was a member of Community Baptist Church.

A son, Patrick Michael Hilliard, preceded her in death.

Survivors include husband Harold J. Hilliard, whom she married Sept. 15, 1958; daughter Amedia Ann Boulton, Granite Tower, Ill.; brother Charles Helton, Gastonia; sister Helen Garman, Gastonia; and four grandchildren.

Services:4 p.m. Sunday, Lyerly Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Chris O’Guin, pastor of Community Baptist, and the Rev. Carroll Robinson, pastor of Lebanon Lutheran Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation:3-4 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.

Barbara C. Lambert

Barbara Jeanette Cook Lambert, 66, of Salisbury, died Friday (Dec. 21, 2001), at her home. She had been in declining health since March and seriously ill for two weeks.

Born Dec. 7, 1935, in Rowan County, Mrs. Lambert was a daughter of the late Ernest William and Margaret Marie Eagle Cook. She was a graduate of Boyden High School and a homemaker. She was a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church.

Survivors include son Jimmy Lambert, Salisbury; daughters Debbie L. Barnwell and Amanda L. Hughes, both of Salisbury; sister Genelda Cook Hunt, Salisbury; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Lyerly Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Stanley L. Champion, pastor of Park Avenue United Methodist. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation:7-8:30 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Jimmy Lambert.

Jimmy D. Thomas

Jimmy Dean Thomas, 56, 3030 Cemetery Drive, died Friday (Dec. 21, 2001) at his home.

Born June 20, 1945, in Rowan County, Mr. Thomas was a son of the late Manuel Lee “Red”Thomas Jr. and Doris Shutt Thomas. A 1964 graduate of East Rowan High School, he was employed at Rowan Auto Parts. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, where he served as scoutmaster. He was also a member of Faith American Legion and Salisbury Shag Club.

Survivors include sons Jeff D., Jamie D. and Jeremy D. Thomas, all of Rockwell; brothers Larry Eugene and Ricky L. Thomas, both of Salisbury; sister Renee Barker of York, S.C.; and one grandchild.

Services:10 a.m. Monday, Faith Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Clarence Sifford and the Rev. Gene Sides. Members of American Legion Post 327 will be seated as a group. Burial, Faith Lutheran Church.

Visitation:7-8:30 p.m. Sunday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

Bruce Weiser

LEXINGTON — Bruce Weiser, 47, of Aurora, Ill., died Monday (Dec. 17, 2001), in Naperville, Ill. He was the brother of Dr. Mark Weiser of Lexington.

Services: 2 p.m., Sunday, First Presbyterian Church. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: None.
