Ella Faye Alexander

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Tuesday for Ella Faye Alexander, 65, 543 Westside Circle, who died Tuesday (Dec. 11, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after seven months of declining health and 10 days of serious illness.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oak Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. James I. Smith. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery,Salisbury.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Jada A. Cowan, 158 Third Ave.

Mitchell &Fair Funeral Service, Salisbury, is in charge.

Edna Nunn Bates

KANNAPOLIS — Edna Mae Nunn Bates, 90, Caremoore Retirement Center, died Sunday (Dec. 16, 2001) at the retirement center after a brief illness.

Born Dec. 6, 1911, in Patrick County,Va., Mrs. Bates was a daughter of the late Sam and Mary Jane Craddock Nunn. In 1975, she retired from Cannon Mills after 39 years. She was a member of Kannapolis Foursquare Church.

Her husband, William Clay Bates, died in 1984, and a son, Jimmy Bates, died in 1999.

Survivors include son William R. “Bill”Bates, Kannapolis; daughters Dorothy Arlene Foster,Kannapolis, and Phyllis Bates Shive, China Grove; sisters Lucy N. Hord, Kannapolis, Pearl N. Collins, Mount Airy, and Bessie N. Hall, Stuart, Va.; brother Noel Nunn, Kannapolis; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Darryl Adams. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Phyllis Shive, 385 Peaceful Lane, China Grove.

 

Ralph Aldo Eddy

WINSTON-SALEM — Ralph Aldo Eddy, 87, Winston-Salem, died Saturday (Dec. 15, 2001) at W.G. “Bill”Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury.

Funeral services will be held at the U.S. National Cemetery in Salisbury at a later date.

Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Anne Rufty Glasgow

Anne Rufty Glasgow, 91, 3181 W. Innes St., died Sunday (Dec. 16, 2001) at Autumn Care of Salisbury after six months of declining health.

Born April 6, 1910, in Rowan County, Mrs. Glasgow was a daughter of the late William Arthur and Bertha Owen Rufty. She was educated in the Salisbury City schools.

A retail sales clerk, she was employed at Efirds Department Store, Gold Shop and Belk’s before her retirement. Prior to that, she and her husband, the late M.A. “Sunshine: Glasgow, operated Coleman’s Snack and Flowers.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Salisbury and Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 17.

Her husband preceded her in death on Aug. 13, 1991.

Survivors include daughter Jackie A. Myers, Spencer; sisters Frances Rufty Barnhardt and Mary Rufty Morgan, both of Salisbury; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, First Baptist Church, Spencer, conducted by the Rev. Franklin Myers, pastor, and the Rev. Tom Roberts. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, City Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Summersett Funeral Home.At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Jackie A. Myers, 803 Fourth St., Spencer.

Memorials: Donor’s choice.

 

John Frank Graham I

John Frank Graham I, 66, 133 Harper Ave., Lima, Ohio, a former East Spencer resident, died Thursday (Dec. 13, 2001) at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, Ohio.

Born March 22, 1935, in Chester County, S.C., Mr. Graham was a son of the late Robert Milton and Mozelle Mitchell Graham. He retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years as a master sergeant. During his military service he received many military honors.

He was affiliated with Military Order of the Cooties and VFW 1275, where he was on the funeral detail and honor squad. He was a member and senior vice president of the Blanket BUM of Pup Tent 6.

He was a member of American Legion 96, and AMVETS Post 1, where he was first vice commander of the 9th District and a chaplain. He was also deputy chaplain for the state of Ohio AMVETS.

He also retired from the control department of General Dynamics. A member of Fourth Street Missionary Baptist Church, Lima, Ohio, he was a driver for Veterans Services at the VAHospital in Dayton, Ohio.

His wife, Merlene V. Hasty Graham, died April 23, 1990. A son, Robert M. Graham, also preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons John F. Graham II, Lima, Ohio, and Dexter L. Graham, Fort Hood, Texas; daughters Renika V. Walls and Brigitta F. Graham, both of Lima, Ohio; brother Leonard Graham, Lancaster, Calif.; sisters Robbie Davis,Salisbury, and Ester Roseboro, Durham; and 15 grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Fourth Street Missionary Baptist Church, Lima, Ohio, conducted by the Rev. Earnest Stephens Jr.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jones-Clark Funeral Home, Lima, Ohio.

The body will be brought to Salisbury, where Mitchell &Fair will be in charge of local arrangements.

 

Judith Carter Watkins

SPENCER — The funeral will be Tuesday for Judith Carter Watkins, 65, Spencer, who died Saturday (Dec. 15, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after eight months of declining health and three weeks of serious illness.

Born June 14, 1936, in Rowan County, Mrs. Watkins, a daughter of the late Daniel Carl and Hattie Ritchie Carter, was a graduate of Spencer High School. She was a homemaker and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and the Christian Women’s Club.

Her husband, Charles Adam Watkins, died Nov. 30, 1984.

Survivors include sons Charles A. “Charlie” Watkins Jr., Spencer, and Michael “Bubba”Watkins, Salisbury; daughters Teresa Jones, Lexington, Connie Vance, Spencer, Angela “Angie” Mickey, Salisbury, and Sandra “Sandy” Kalalau, Clarksburg, W.Va.; brothers Johnny Carter,Salisbury, Phil Carter,Locust, and Jimmy Carter, Florida; sisters Myrtle Moore, Hagerstown, Md., and Patricia Carter, Salisbury; 14 grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Services: Noon, Tuesday, Tabernacle Baptist Church, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Mark Brown and the Rev. Tony Fox. The body will be placed in the church at 11:30. Burial, National Cemetery,Railroad Street, Salisbury.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home, Salisbury.At other times the family will be at the home of son Michael “Bubba” Watkins, Salisbury.
