James Arthur Birst

James Arthur Birst, of 221 Guffy St., Salisbury, died Saturday (Dec. 15, 2001) at his home.

Mitchell and Fair Funeral Services is serving the Birst family.

 

Vergie Bostian

Vergie Cranford Bostian, 97, of Salisbury, died Friday (Dec. 14, 2001) at Heritage Plantation Rest Home.

Born October 31, 1904 in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Jesse T. and Caroline Frick Cranford. She was educated in the Rowan County Schools and at Sundeland Academy in Concord.

She was a Nursing Assistant at Rowan Memorial Hospital for many years. She was a member of Christian Lutheran Church, where she was a member of WELCA and the Jennie Thomas Sunday School Class.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Clarance L. Bostian Sr., who died September 25, 1980.

Survivors include son Clarence L. Bostian Jr., of Salisbury; sisters Elizabeth Gillikan, Goldsboro, and Frances C. Waller, Salisbury; one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.

Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Christian Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Carl M. Haynes, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Powles Funeral Home.

 

Glen Carrington

MOORESVILLE—Glen Carrington, 78, died Friday (Dec. 14, 2001).

Funeral services will be in private.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 150 S. Church St., Mooresville, NC, 28115 or the charity of donor’s choice.

James Ervin Christian

ALBEMARLE — James Ervin Christian, 53, of 466 Davis St., died Thursday (Dec. 13, 2001) at his home.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Saints Delight Church, conducted by Elder James E. Richardson, pastor. Burial will be at Oak View Cemetery.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Kelsey Funeral Home, Albemarle, is serving the Christian family.

 

Madge Crowell Clark

LEXINGTON — Madge Crowell Clark, 92, formerly of Southmont, died Friday (Dec. 14, 2001) at Lexington Health Care after several years of declining health.

Services: 2 p.m. today at Maceonia Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Randy Tingle. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at the Fellowship Hall of the church following the service. Other times, they will be at the home of brother, Bill Crowell, 101 Glendale Road or Minnie C. Davis, 700 Fairview Drive.

Arnold Cook Sr.

KANNAPOLIS — Arnold Loverne Cook Sr., 62, of 905 West C St., died Friday (Dec. 14, 2001) at his home.

Born March 15, 1939 in Union County, he was the son of the late WIlliam Alton and Verla Aldridge Cook.

He retired in 1994 from Iredell Milk Company as a truck driver. He was a veteran of the US Army, having served in the Korean War.

He attended West A Tabernacle Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Cook, in 1980.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Canupp Cook, of the family home; sons Junior Cook, Berry Cook and Charles Cook, all of Kannapolis; brother Ted Cook, Concord; and nine grandchildren.

Services: A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at West A Tabernacle Baptist Church, conducted by the Reb. Richard Pethel. The body will be cremated. There will be no visitation.

Rosa Marie Fetherson

EAST SPENCER — Rosa Marie Fetherson, 53, of 519 S. Long St., died Thursday (Dec. 13, 2001) at University Hospital, Charlotte.

Born August 6, 1948 in Union County, she was the daughter of the late Janie Jones Fetherson and Johnnie Fetherson, of Charlotte.

She was a 1966 graduate of Dunbar High School. She worked for Scandurs Industries, Charlotte.

She was a member of Fairview Heights Baptist Church.

In addition to her father, she is survived by her son TaShea N. Fetherson, Charlotte; daughter LaTonia L. Wilson, Iron Station, NC; brothers Franklin L. Fetherson, Lexington, James Fetherson, Salisbury and Larry Fetherson, East Spencer; sister Dianetter Fetherson Roman, Lexington; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fairview Heights Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Clarence Marlin. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 1 to 2 p.m.Tuesday at the church before the service.

Robert Freeman

KANNAPOLIS — Robert Anderson Freeman, 79, of 1001 China Grove Road, died Friday (Dec. 14, 2001) at his home.

Born Nov. 10, 1922 in Rowan County, he was the son of William Anderson and Ella Mae Freeman. He attended Cannon High School.

Mr. Freeman was a veteran of World War II. He served in the 101st Airborne and received the Purple Heart, Victory Medal and EOT Ribbon. He began his career with Textile Workers Union of America that lasted 38 years after the war.

He was an active member of VFW Post 8989 and DAV Chapter 54, as well as Elwood Lane Freewill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Freeman; daughters Robbie Jackson, Memphis, Robin Freeman, Kannapolis and Linda Rufty, Raeford, Va.; son Dino Jackson, Winston-Salem; sisters Ruth Hedrick and Juanita Bennett, both of Mooresville, Phyllis Baucom and Brenda Addison, both of Kannapolis and Lois Barbee of Harrisburg; and six grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elwood Lane Freewill Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. David Parrish and the Rev. Curtis parker. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park with military rites conducted by DAV Chapter 27.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Richard Freeze

STATESVILLE — Richard Davidson Freeze, 87, of Old Mountain Road, died Friday (Dec. 14, 2001) at the Brian Center, Salisbury.

His is survived by his wife, Sudie Rumple Freeze; son Dr. Gary Freeze, a professor at Catawba College; sister Margie Wagner, Cooleemee; brother James A. Freeze, Statesville; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at New Perth ARPChurch. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30 to 8 p.m. tonight at Troutman Funeral Home.

Eva D. Fritts

LEXINGTON — Eva Atwood Dorsett Fritts, 63, of Dorsett Road, died Friday (Dec. 14, 2001) at Lexington Memorial Hospital after a 4-year illness.

Services: 2:30Tuesday at North Lexington Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Robert Floyd. Burial will be at Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel. Other times, they will be at the home.

 

Holly Renee Love

STANFIELD — Infant Holly Renee Love, of 5011-A Rushing Road, died Friday (Dec. 14, 2001) at University Hospital.

Services: A graveside service will be held today at Hatleys Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Ronnie Simpson.

Visitation: The family will be at the home in Stanfield.

Dewitt Mills

ALBEMARLE — Dewitt Mills, 79, of 25971 Dunlap Road, died Friday (Dec. 14, 2001) at his home.

Born June 21, 1922 in Stanly County, he was the son of the late George Stamie and Ester Mae Dennis Mills.

He was a veteran of the US Army, having served in World War II.

He attended Anderson Grove Baptist Church. He retired from the City of Albemarle in Street Maintenance.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Survivors include wife, Vernie Louise Pinion Mills, of the home; sons Paul Stephen Mills, Oakboro, and Matthew Mark Mills, Albemarle; daughters Lou Archer, Albemarle, Judy Smith, Richfield, Mary Daniels, Lexington, Barbara Davis, Gold Hill, Linda Crisco, Locust, Kathy Tucker, New London, Tammy Deaton, Mt. Gilead, Susan Mauney, Mt. Pleasant and Kelly Speights, Concord; brother James Thomas “Jim” Mills, Albemarle; sisters Cleola Deese and Bertie McKeithan, both of Albemarle; 20 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Ronald Honeycutt. Burial will be at Stanly Gardens of Memory.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at Hartsell Funeral Home. Other times, the family will be at the home of daughter, Lou Archer, 116 Holt Road, Albemarle.

Joel Allen Oliphant Sr.

MT. ULLA — Joel Allen Oliphant Sr., 55, of Childers Road, died Saturday (Dec. 15, 2001) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born on March 13, 1946 in Iredell County, he was the son of the late Robert Davidson and Alma Lowrance Oliphant. He was a retired supervisor for Food Lion, having 26 years of service.

He currently owned and operated O’s Farm Fresh Produce on Mazeppa Road in Mooresville.

He was a member of Faith Independent Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Hunt Oliphant.

Survivors include fiance, Deborah, Mt. Ulla; sons Joel Allen Oliphant Jr., Mt. Ulla, and Geoffrey Todd Oliphant, Mooresville; brother R. Powell Oliphant, Mooresville; sisters Geraldine O. Avett, Murphy, NC, Lena O. Jenkins, Mt. Dora, Fla., and Nan O. Jones, Mooresville; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Cavin-Cook Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Craig Seaford. Entombment will follow at Iredell Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Visitation: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.

ALBEMARLE — A. Gerald Rummage, 74, of 1116 East McGill St., died Friday (Dec. 14, 2001) at Carolina Medical Center.

Services: A graveside service will be held today at 2:30 p.m. at Stanly Gardens of Memory, conducted by the Rev. Sid Martin and the Rev. Gary Pinion.
