Jay William Boone

NORWOOD—Jay William Boone, 82, 16692 U.S. Hwy. 52 South, died Saturday (Dec. 1, 2001) at the VA Medical Center.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Delane Burris. Burial will be at Stanly Gardens of Memory.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hartsell Funeral Home.

 

Vera ‘Tiny’ Brannon

EAST SPENCER—Vera Onetta “Tiny” Brannon, 66, of Geroid Street, died Thursday (Nov. 29, 2001) at Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton.

Born on Nov. 28, 1935, in Salisbury, she was the daughter of the late George E. and Hattie Hairston Brannon. She was a graduate of Dunbar High School and K.B. School of Nursing in Winston-Salem.

She was a retired registered nurse at the VA Medical Center.

A member of Southern City Tabernacle AME Zion Church, she was also a member of various organizations within the church. She was a member of the National Hairston Clan,Inc., Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Knights of Phythias and Omega Court of Calanthe #214.

She served as a nurse for the Grand Court of Calanthe for the State of North Carolina.

She is survived by her daughter, Doris Brannon Tucker, Camp Springs, MD; brothers, James “Jimmy” Brannon, Cleveland, Ohio, and Calvin Brannon, Winston-Salem; sisters Mary Thompson, Winston-Salem, Allene Poe, Salisbury, Carolyn Davis, Florissant, Mo., and Marion Himmons, Cleveland, Ohio; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Southern City Tabernacle AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Rollings Graham, pastor. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Noble & Kelsey Funeral Home, Inc.

 

Theodore Hinnant

NEW LONDON—Theodore Hinnant, 67, of 40289 Hwy. 740, died Saturday (Dec. 1, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born August 31, 1934, in Wilson County, he was the son of the late William R. and Hettie Whitley Hinnant. He was educated in the public schools of Wilson County and was a graduate of NCA&T State University. He was a retired educator of the Stanly County School System.

A member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, he was a trustee and a member of the Senior Choir. He was also a member of the Optimist Club, Black Business Men’s Association of Stanly County, Stanly County Civil Board, a former member of the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Parachutist and a former Mason.

His wife, Placidia Barnhill Hinnant, preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughter Patrice Hinnant Gordon, of the home; and sister Inez Higgins, Orange, NJ.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Troy, conducted by the Rev. Walter Coleman. Burial will be at Stanly Garden of Memory.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at the home.

Kelsey Funeral Home of Albemarle is serving the Hinnant family.

 

Maria B. Kirkman

LEXINGTON—Maria Sherwood Beck Kirkman, 91, of Greenway Drive, died Friday (Nov. 30, 2001) at Lexington Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

Service: 2 p.m .Tuesday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel, conducted by Dr. Ray Howell III and the Rev. Tommy Wilson. Burial will be at Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel.

Thomas Glenn Lee

Thomas Glenn Lee, 54, of Salisbury, died unexpectedly Friday (Nov. 30, 2001) at his residence.

Born Jan. 7, 1947, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late David Earl and Bessie Watts Lee. He was educated in the Rowan County schools.

He was the owner of Lee Automotive and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include sons, Jody Glenn Lee, Wesley Thomas Lee and Clinton John Lee, all of Salisbury; daughters, Lisa Peck, Salisbury, and Tonya Pethel, Kannapolis; brothers David Lee, Florida, and Jim Lee and Harold Lee, both of Salisbury; sisters, Jean Holloway and Sue Brady, both of Salisbury; and three grandchildren.

Services: A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Ted Davis, pastor of First Freewill Baptist Church, China Grove.

Visitation: 7:30 to 2:30 p.m. Monday before the service, at Lyerly Funeral Home.

 

Lois Peeler Ritchie

FAITH—Lois Peeler Ritchie, 90, died Saturday (Dec. 1, 2001) at her residence.

Born Oct. 26, 1911, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Luther Leo and Zelda Holler Peeler. She was a graduate of Boyden High School and was a homemaker.

She was a lifelong member of Shiloh United Church of Christ and a member of the Ladies Bible Class and of the Morning Circle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Jeremiah “C.J.” Ritchie on May 28, 1969, and her daughter, Carol Janette Ritchie Retallick, on March 13, 1997.

Survivors include sons Mark S. Ritchie, Salisbury, and Dennis B. Ritchie, China Grove; half-brothers Gregory Peeler, Ted Peeler and Jerry Peeler, all of Faith; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Shiloh United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Lawrence Bolick, pastor, and the Rev. Charles Sigler, retired pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 Monday at Powles Funeral Home. Other times, the family will be at the residence.

Wallie Strickland

Wallie Dayton Strickland, 87, of Brithaven Nursing Center, died Saturday (Dec. 1, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born Aug. 9, 1913, in Columbus County, he was to son of the late Huey and Delphie Strickland. He was educated in the Columbus County Schools.

He worked for R.H. Boulany Co. for 12 years as a welder. He was also a farmer and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by Ted Strickland and Maxie Strickland in 1965 and wife Arlene Strickland in 1999.

Survivors include sons Tony Dayton Strickland, China Grove, and Franklin Donald Strickland, Concord; daughters Betty Grainger, Rock Hill, SC, Eleanar Faye Finney and Mary Joe White, both of Kannapolis, Beulah M. Fink, Landis, Patricia Ann Register and Sylvia Jean Henderson, both of China Grove; brothers Baston Strickland and Erskine Strickland, both of Tabor City; sister Neppie Butler, Charleston, SC; 21 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren.

Services: 8:30 p.m. tonight at Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Beaver Hammonds. Burial will be at Carolina Baptist Church, Tabor City, NC.

Another service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Carolina Baptist Church. He will lie in state there from 1 to 2 p.m.

Visitation: 6:30 to 8:30 tonight before the service at the funeral home. Other times, the family will be at the home of daughter Sylvia Jean Henderson, 9555 Old Concord Road, China Grove.

 

Mary Lee Talbert

SPENCER—Mary Lee Hagler Talbert, 83, of Spencer, died Saturday (Nov. 1, 2001) at her residence.

Lyerly Funeral Home is serving the Talbert family.

 

Wilma Thompson

MOORESVILLE—Wilma Johnson Thompson, 74, of 502 Dingler St., died Friday (Nov. 30, 2001) at lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Southside Baptist Church, conducted by the Dr. Steve Gouge. Burial will be at Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Neill Funeral Home.

Marshall O. Walser Sr.

LEXINGTON—Marshall Odell Walser Sr., 85, of Koo-Leo Farm Road, died Saturday (Dec. 1, 2001) at his residence.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Monday at Yadkin College United Methodist Church.

Visitation: 7 to 9 tonight at Piedmont Funeral Home. Other times, the family will be at the residence.

 

August H. Williams

KANNAPOLIS—August Henry Williams, 84, of 1004 Brantley Road, died Friday (Nov. 30, 2001) at Transitional Health Care following a number of years declining health and six months of serious illness.

Born Jan. 8, 1917, in Hart County, Ga., he was the son of the late A.H. and Christine Zimmerman Williams. He was a graduate of Blacksburg High School, Blacksburg, SC.

Mr. Williams retired from Southern Railway with 46 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he taught the Young Men’s Bible Class. He was a member of Cannon Memorial Masonic Lodge, the American Legion and a charter member of the John R. Mott Y’s Mens Club.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Carter Williams; son Mike Williams, Kannapolis; and two grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church, Kannapolis, conducted by Dr. Joseph R. Crawford. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2 to 3 p.m. today at the church.

Memorials: First Presbyterian Church, 201 Vance St., Kannapolis, NC28081.
