Ollie Ballard

CONCORD —Ollie Ballard, 59, 212 Goodman Circle, died Wednesday (Aug. 29, 2001) at her home.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Near the Cross Church, Kannapolis. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 6-9 p.m. Friday at the church.

Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, is in charge.

Melvin W. Carpenter

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Friday for Melvin Wade Carpenter, 66, 322 Corriher Heights Ave., who died Tuesday (Aug. 28, 2001) at his home.

Born March 16, 1935, in Rowan County, Mr. Carpenter was a son of the late Grady C. and Ruth Drye Carpenter. He was a graduate of Rowan Technical Institute, now Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. He retired as a dinkie driver from Cannon Mills distribution center and was a school bus driver for Kannapolis City Schools.

A member of Rodgers Park Baptist Church, he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include wife Marilyn Bennett Carpenter; daughters Rhonda C. Copeland, China Grove, and Kelly C. Bost, Landis; sister Gazelle C. Andrews, China Grove; and three grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Rogers Park Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tony Fox and the Rev. Leon Smith. Burial, Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery, Landis. Military rites by Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis. At other times, the family will be at the home on Corriher Heights Avenue.

Ida Chaney Cranford

The funeral will be Friday for Ida Mae Chaney Cranford, 88, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (Aug. 29, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after six weeks of serious illness.

Born Sept. 24, 1912, in Salisbury, Mrs. Cranford, a daughter of the late John Anderson and Dora Lee Albright Chaney, was educated in the Salisbury city schools. She was employed by Cone Mills and later with Stanback Co., where she retired in 1977 after 26 years.

A lifelong member of Stallings Memorial Baptist Church, she was in the Homemakers Sunday School Class. She was a member of Cone Mills Senior Citizen Club and the Cone Mills Hat Band.

Her husband,Clayton Wells Cranford, died Oct. 25, 1984.

Survivors include daughter Sylvia C. Riehm, Salisbury.

Services: 11 a.m.Friday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Robert Heard, interim pastor, Stallings Memorial Baptist Church. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Annie Rosa Dameron

ANDREWS, Texas — Annie Rosa Dameron, 98, Andrews, a former Rowan County resident, died Tuesday (Aug. 28, 2001) at her home.

Born Nov. 21, 1902, in Nelson County, Va., Mrs. Dameron was a daughter of the late Walter and Rosa Harris. On Dec. 4, 1917, she married Harry Hoyle Banton in Bristol, Tenn. They owned and operated Banton’s Cash Grocery in Ironton, Ohio. He died on May 13, 1937.

In 1939, she married William Roswell Nash, who died in 1948. In 1955, she married James Hiram Dameron, who died in 1973. That year she moved to Andrews from Altavista, Va.

Baptized at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Salisbury, N.C., she was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Andrews. Mrs. Dameron received a Gold Star Mother’s Pin when her son, Hoover Hoyle Banton, died during World War II on Nov. 22, 1943.

Survivors include daughter Pauline McDonald, Andrews; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Andrews, conducted by the Rev. Bernard Gully. Burial, Andrews West Cemetery.

Pansy Mae Livengood

LEXINGTON — Pansy Mae Livengood, 65, 101 W. Fourth Ave., died Tuesday (Aug. 28, 2001) at her home.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Reeds United Methodist Church.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home.

 

Clarence H. Morris

BADIN —Clarence Howard Morris, 86, 27 Boyden St., died Tuesday (Aug. 28, 2001) at his home.

Born Nov. 17, 1914, in Chambers County, Ala., Mr. Morris was a son of the late William Lofton and Nellie Beatrice Watkins Morris. He served with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre during World War II.

He graduated from Berry College, Earlhem College, the University of Maryland and United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio, and attended Peabody College of Music, Interlochen School of Music and South Georgia Teachers College.

He taught school in Georgia and Maryland and pastored churches in Alabama, Ohio and Maryland.

A member of Badin United Methodist Church, he was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, choir director, taught Bible study courses and was a counselor at youth summer camps. He was also a director of city bands and was a member of Jaycees, Kiwanis,Lions Club and Ruritan. A Boy Scout and scoutmaster, he was an organizer of Cub Scouts and a PTA president.

Survivors include wife of 65 years Aileen Abernethy Morris, Badin; son Robert Morris, Contonement, Fla.; brothers Hugh Morris, Valley, Ala., and Jim Morris, Columbia, S.C.; sisters Dorothy Smallwood and Helen Morris, both of Valley, Ala.; and one granddaughter.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Concord United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Bob Romanello. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation:7-8:30 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times, the family will be at the home on Boyden Street.

Rev. David Pharr

The Rev. David Pharr, White Plains, N.Y., formerly of Salisbury, died Monday (Aug. 27, 2001).

Born July 9, 1917, Rev. Pharr was a son of the late Adolphus D. and Fannie Pharr. He attended the Salisbury city schools and received his bachelor’s degree and master in divinity from Livingstone College. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

A pastor in the AME Zion Church for over 50 years, he served nine churches in his ministerial career. In 1984, he was appointed presiding elder of the Long Island District of the New York Conference of the AME Zion Church.

He led the construction of an education building at Moores Sanctuary AME Zion Church, Charlotte; restored the church steeple at Mount Lebanon AME Zion Church, Elizabeth City; and obtained a parsonage for Greater Hood AME Zion Church, New York City.

Since retirement, he acted as associate pastor of Mount Hope AME Zion Church, White Plains, N.Y.

Survivors include wife of 54 years Pauline Johnston Pharr; children Betty, Marcia, David Pharr Jr., Faith and Calvin Pharr; brother Adolphus D. Pharr Jr., Brandywine, Md.; and sister Louise Ransom, Salisbury.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Mount Hope AME Zion Church, White Plains, N.Y. Burial, Rose Hills Memorial Park, Putnam Valley, N.Y.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the church.

Lee’s Funeral Home, White Plains, N.Y., is in charge.
