Dr. John Buford

HOUSTON, Texas — Dr. John Terry Harvey Buford, 70, Houston, died Tuesday (Aug. 28, 2001).

Born July 9, 1931, in Salisbury, son of the late Grace Harvey and Harry Blackburn Buford Sr., Dr. Buford graduated from Boyden High School in 1950 and served in the Marine Corps from 1951 to 1954.

He received a bachelor’s degree from Catawba College in 1958 and D.D.S. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1962. He practiced dentistry in North Carolina and the U.S. Virgin Islands. He was a member of St. Thomas of Canterbury Church in Houston.

Survivors include wife Charlene Buford; daughter Elizabeth “Beth” Terry Buford, Houston; and son John T. H. Buford Jr., Spencer, N.C.

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, conducted by the Rev. Jim Payne. Graveside, 10 a.m. Saturday, Longwood Cemetery, Bedford, Va.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Jeter Memorial Funeral Home.

 

Melvin Carpenter

CHINA GROVE — Melvin Carpenter, 66, 325 Corriher Heights Ave., died Tuesday (Aug. 28, 2001) at his home.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis, is in charge.

 

Dr. Clinton Lee China

Dr. Clinton Lee China, 77, Salisbury, died Saturday (Aug. 25, 2001) at his home.

Born Sept. 2, 1923, in Jarratt, Va., a son of Clinton Lee and Sara Virginia Finney China, Dr. China earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Richmond, a master’s in industrial psychology from N.C. State University in 1953, and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Tennessee in 1967.

He worked at the VA Medical Center in Salisbury from 1971 to 1986 and was chief of the psychology service. Dr. China was a life member of the American Psychological Association and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Survivors include wife Elaine Martin China, whom he married April 15, 1967; daughters Deborah China Sanders, Nashville, Tenn., and D. Rebecca China, Chesapeake, Va.; brother Charles Randolph China, Richmond, Va.; sister Christine China Phillips, Richmond, Va.; and four grandchildren.

Services: Private. Burial, Salisbury National Cemetery at a later date. The body will be cremated.

Evergreen Cremation Services of Salisbury is in charge.

William Buck Church

MOORESVILLE —William Buck Church, 83, Charlotte Highway, died Monday (Aug. 27, 2001) at his home.

Born May 20, 1918, in Iredell County, Mr. Church was a son of the late Roy Grover and Eulalia Benfield Church. Three of his nearly 4 1/2 years in the U.S. Army were spent in Italy and Germany.

In 1980, he retired after 37 years from Cannon Mills, Kannapolis, where he was foreman of the paint department. He was a member and deacon of Centre Presbyterian Church, Mount Mourne, and a member of IredellCounty Volunteer Sheriff Department for 30 years.

A retired member of Shepherd Volunteer Fire Department, he was named Fireman of the Year in 1973, was a member of the traffic control division, a former chaplain, and a board member. He was also a board member of Tom Swann VFW Post 1072 and the Stroke Club.

Survivors include wife Joncie Nantz Church, whom he married Dec. 23, 1945; daughter Jane Hendrix, Mocksville; sons William B. “Sandy” Church Jr. and Jack Church, both of Mooresville; brother Roy Church Jr., Raleigh; sisters Joan Sherrill, Mooresville, Ann Smith, Johnson City,Tenn., and Mary Adams and Margaret Helms, both of Kannapolis; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Thursday, Centre Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Robert M. Howard. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.

Ida Mae Cranford

Ida Mae Chaney Cranford, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Aug. 29, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Rev. George Hunter Jr.

ALBEMARLE — The Rev. George Henry Vincent Hunter Jr., 85, 5150 Sharon Road, Charlotte, died Tuesday (Aug. 28, 2001) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Born Nov. 17, 1915, in Kings County, N.Y., son of the late George Henry and Emily Blomeley Hunter, Rev. Hunter attended Scarsdale High School in New York, New York University and Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, Va.

He served in the Army Air Force from 1942 to 1946 and was recalled to duty in the Georgia National Guard from 1950 to 1952.

After World War II, he worked in the promotion departments of the Washington Post, Atlanta Journal and Charlotte News. He later served Presbyterian churches in Dunn, High Point, Badin and Hickory, and Shepherstown, W.Va.

He retired after a stroke in 1981 but served five years as alternate pastor at Calvary Presbyterian Church, Davidson.

After retiring, he was active in the Stanly County Chapter of the American Red Cross and Hospice of Stanly County.

His first wife, Wyndolyn McNeely Hunter, died in 1987. A stepdaughter, Kaye Hollar Fain, also preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Mary Morrison Hunter, Charlotte; stepson Howard B. Hollar Jr., Landis; stepdaughter Joann H. Beaver, Salisbury; brother Ralph B. Hunter, Longboat Key, Fla.; five step-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. John Alexander. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Mary B. Gurley

CHINA GROVE — Mary Addline Broadway Gurley, 74, 470 Morrow Road, died Tuesday (Aug. 28, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born July 20, 1927, in Davie County, Mrs. Gurley was the daughter of the late Thomas Nathaniel and Grace McDaniel Broadway.

She had worked at Corriher Mills, Landis, and Cannon Mills Plant 1. She attended Bible Truth Church, Catawba County.

Survivors include husband James Gurley Sr.; daughter Kay G. Sutton, Rockwell; sons Jeffrey Lane Gurley, China Grove, and James Gurley Jr., Rockwell; brothers Otis Broadway, Kannapolis, Fred Broadway, Salisbury, and Arnold Broadway, Old Fort; sisters Jean Singletary and Betty Jacobs, both of Panama City, Fla.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: Private graveside service Thursday, Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum, conducted by the Rev. L.N. Stanley.

Visitation: 7 to 9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

 

Norvester Huntley

OAKBORO —Norvester “Veet” Huntley, 46, 506 W. Second St., brother of Linda H. Sturdivant, Albemarle, died Sunday (Aug. 26, 2001) in Charlotte. He was a team leader for SPX (Medal Forge) in Albemarle.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, St. Matthew United Church of God. Burial, Mount Zion Church cemetery, Albemarle.

Samuel Lee Mills

JAMAICA, N.Y.—Samuel Lee Mills, 92, 110-13 147th St., died Friday (Aug. 24, 2001) at St. Joseph Hospital after a period of declining health.

Born Aug. 19, 1909, in Rowan County, N.C., he was the son of the late Thomas and Mary Janes Cowan Mills. He was educated in the Rowan County public schools.

He was a retired construction worker in New York. Formerly, he was a member of Mount Tabor Presbyterian Church, Cleveland. N.C.

Survivors include wife Grace Patterson Mills, New York, N.Y.; brother Edward Mills, Salisbury, N.C.; and sister Mabel Mills, Salisbury, N.C.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Friday, Mount Tabor Presbyterian Church USA, Cleveland, N.C., conducted by the Rev. Joe Spears. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 3 p.m. Friday at the church.

Guy A. Moore

HOUSTON, Texas — Guy Andre Moore, 34, Houston, died Sunday (Aug. 26, 2001).

Lady’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, N.C., is in charge.

 

Louise G. Moss

KANNAPOLIS — Louise Gabriel Moss, 93, 1304 Sides Ave., died Monday (Aug. 27, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a brief illness.

Born May 29, 1908, in Catawba County, Mrs. Moss was a daughter of the late Joseph F. and Nona Sherrill Gabriel.

She was employed by Cannon Mills Co. Plant 1sheet department until her retirement.

She was a long-time member of North Kannapolis United Methodist Church, where she was active with the Jet-Set senior citizens.

She was preceded in death by sons Jerry W. Moss and Hugh T. Gabriel, and a granddaughter.

Survivors include husband Donald Coleman Moss, whom she married Aug. 26, 1933; daughter Linda Moss Forester, Concord; brothers T.B. and Clifford Gabriel, both of Sherrills Ford; sisters Katherine Felts, Kannapolis, and Nancy Saunders, Catawba; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, North Kannapolis United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Susan German. Graveside, 4 p.m. Thursday, Hopewell United Methodist Church cemetery, Sherrills Ford.

Visitation: 6 to 8 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. Other times, the family will be at the home on Sides Avenue.
