Eveleen Ashby

KANNAPOLIS — Eveleen Ashby, 74, of 509 Locust St., Kannapolis, died Friday (Aug. 24, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center after one and a half years of illness.

Born Jan 3, 1927, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Arthur S. Ashby and Alice Geneva Harris Ashby.

She retired from Cannon Mills and also worked at Big Elm Retirement Center and Hilltop Nursing Home.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by son Johnny Lee Rogers and brother Albert C. Ashby.

Survivors include sisters Ethel Fowler and Louella Barnhardt, both of Kannapolis; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. today, Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. T. Edwin Luther. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2:30-3:30 today, the funeral home.

Cora DeVeaux

Cora Bennett DeVeaux of 615 West Horah St., Salisbury, died Thursday (Aug. 23, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center following a period of declining health.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Murray Edwards.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

Sarah Farmer

YANCEYVILLE – Sarah Dameron Farmer, 80, of 1433 Foster Road, died Friday (Aug. 24, 2001) at Genesis Nursing Center in Salisbury after an extended illness.

A native of Caswell County, she was born June 23, 1921, to the late Currie L.Dameron and Loucile H. Dameron. She was a graduate of Greensboro College. In 1992 she retired from a teaching career in Washington County, Maryland, Reidsville City and Caswell County schools.

She was preceded in death by her husband, S. Ryland Farmer and grandson Samuel W. Farmer.

Survivors include two sisters Margaret D. Hatchett of Pelham and Nettie D. Blackwell, Yanceyville; son R. Lee Farmer, Yanceyville; daughter Sarah F. Hensley; and three grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Prospect United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Joseph Lister. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation:7-8:30 tonight, Marley Funeral Home.

Everett Kerns

Everett Lagrande Kerns, 49, of 208 S. Partee St., Salisbury died Monday (Aug. 20, 2001) at his home.

Born Nov. 23, 1951, in Rowan County, he was a son of Marian Rankins Hargrave and Scott J. Kerns Sr.

A graduate of Boyden High School, he served in the U.S.Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post 107. He was a custodian at Hefner VA Medical Center.

Survivors include wife Dianna Vinson Kerns; son Everett Kerns Jr., Salisbury; two daughters, Angie Curry, Charlotte, Sonya Marie Kerns, Queens, N.Y.; three brothers, Scott Kerns Jr., College Park, Ga. and Riccardo Kerns, Anchorage, Alaska; four sisters, Curley Kerns, Duluth, Ga. and Sheryl Kerns, Pearl Clawson and Renee Harrison, all of Salisbury; and five grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday, National Cemetery on Brenner Avenue, conducted by the Rev. Martha Starks. Rowan Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

 

Helen McLendon

ALBEMARLE — Helen Kirk McLendon, 85, of 24948 U.S. 52, Albemarle, died Friday (Aug. 24, 2001) at Stanly Manor.

Born Oct. 29, 1915, in Stanly County, she was a daughter of the late Hattie Lee Kirk and Edgar Black Kirk.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Cyril McLendon Sr., in 1990. She was a retired florist at Harwood’s Florist.

Survivors include daughter Brenda M. McLendon of Albemarle and sons Charles C. McLendon, Jr. and Sidney L. McLendon, both of Albemarle.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Union Chapel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Buddy Compton and the Rev. Jim Faggart. Burial, church cemetery.

Samuel Mills

Samuel Lee Mills, 92, of 110-13 147th St., Jamaica, N.Y., died Friday (Aug. 24, 2001) at St. Joseph Hospital in Jamaica, N.Y. after a period of declining health.

Born Aug. 19, 1909, in Rowan County, he was a son of the late Mary Jane Cowan Mills and Thomas Mills. He was a retired construction worker in New York City and a former member of Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church in Cleveland.

Survivors include wife Grace Patterson, brother Edward Mills, Salisbury and sister Mabel Mills, Salisbury.

Services were incomplete at Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home.

 

Jeffrey Scott

MOCKSVILLE – Jeffrey Lawrence Scott, 39, of 420 Morse St., Mocksville, was dead on arrival Friday (Aug. 24, 2001) at Forsyth Medical Center after an apparent heart attack.

Born in Davie County, he was a son of Flossie Imes Scott and the late John Frank Scott. He was last employed at Skyline Corp.

Along with his mother, survivors include son Winson Scott of Advance; daughter Sharina Scott of Advance; two brothers, Steve “Janie” Scott, Yadkinville and Bobby Imes, Harmony; three sisters, Shelia Scott and Vanessa Scott, both of Mocksville, and Cynthia “Robert” Kenan of Greensboro.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, Graham Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Robert Bailey. Burial, Mainville AMEZion Church Cemetery.

Visitation: Tuesday, one hour before the service, at the funeral home.

 

Randy Stiller

Randy Eugene Stiller, 45, of 4455 Miller Road, Salisbury, died Friday (Aug. 24, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born July 1, 1956, he was a son of Patsy Pethel Stiller and the late Gene P. Stiller. He had worked at Cone Mills as a fixer.

Survivors include son Travis Stiller, Salisbury, and sister Penny Cannon, Salisbury.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Gary Sloop. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, the funeral home.

Joseph Wallace

Joseph Banner Wallace, 79, of 835 Cooper Road, Salisbury, died Friday (Aug. 24, 2001) at his home.

Born Aug. 9, 1922, in Altavista, Va., he was a son of the late Martha Alice Lakey and Charles C. Wallace. He served in the US Army during World War II and retired from Burlington Mills as a reed fixer. He was an usher at China Grove Church of God.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Virgie Saul.

Survivors include wife Bettie Hill Wallace; three sons, Albert J. Wallace, Salisbury, Charles Wallace, East Spencer and David Wallace, Hendersonville; two stepsons, Steven Eller, China Grove and James Eller, Jr., Salisbury; daughter Linda Herring, Salisbury; brother John H. Wallace, Daneville, Va.; three sisters, Allie Barnard, Lynchburg, Va., Marie Ferrell, Charlotteville, Va. and Ruby Sinclair, Cary, Ill.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, China Grove Church of God, conducted by the Rev. Roger Lunsford. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.
