Livingstone football player injured in car crash

BY BRAD A. HODGES
SALISBURY POST

A Livingstone College football player was flown by helicopter to a Charlotte hospital Saturday after another man who had been drinking fell asleep at the wheel and struck his car head-on, Salisbury police said.

Jamie Lee Usher, 20, of 3363 W. Innes St., was charged with driving while impaired. He was in satisfactory condition Saturday night at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Wayne Donnell Majors, 22, of Clancy Street remained in critical condition Saturday night at Carolinas Medical Center. Majors, who is listed on the Livingstone roster at 6-foot, 245 pounds, is a senior who plays inside linebacker for the Bears.

At 6:58 a.m. Saturday, Usher’s 1993 Ford Ranger crossed the center line as he was driving on Jake Alexander Boulevard between the railroad tracks and Industrial Avenue, police said.

The truck struck Major’s 1995 Saturn, flipped, and threw Usher through the window, Sgt. Sam Russell said.

Rescue responders had to cut a hole in the roof of the car to free Majors.
