Charles Alexander

COOLEEMEE — Charles Erwin “Buddy” Alexander, 89, Center Street, died Wednesday (Aug. 22, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Eaton Funeral Home, Mocksville, is in charge.

Creston Holmes Erwin

KANNAPOLIS —The funeral will be Friday for Creston Holmes “Chick” Erwin, 88, who died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at Five Oaks Nursing Center, Concord, after a period of declining health.

Born July 27, 1913, in Sunflower County, Miss., Mr. Erwin was a son of the late Lewis Holmes and Eunice Farish Martin Erwin. He retired after 50 years from Cannon Mills plant 1 No. 6 weave room. He also was a self-employed finish carpenter for many years.

Survivors include wife of 68 years Evelyn Cox Erwin; sons Quiedon Erwin, Kannapolis, and Creston Erwin Jr., Denver, Colo.; daughters Judith Rodgers, Kannapolis, and Jann Dennison, St. Petersburg, Fla.; sister Alice Bonds, Kannapolis; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 4 p.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by Dr. Joe Crawford. Burial at Carolina Memorial Park at a later date.

Visitation: At the funeral home after the memorial service.

 

Garland ‘Zip’ Fowler

The funeral will be Thursday for Garland Francis “Zip” Fowler, 56, 125 Will Black Road, who died Monday (Aug. 20, 2001) at his home after eight weeks of serious illness.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Albert Young Jr. Burial, 11 a.m. Friday, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

 

Janie F. Freeze

CHINA GROVE — Janie F. Freeze, 94, formerly of China Grove, died Tuesday (Aug. 21, 2001) at Autumn Care of Mocksville.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, is in charge.

 

Ruth Arlene Garrison

Ruth Arlene Garrison, 80, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Aug. 22, 2001) at Carillon Assisted Living of Salisbury.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Zella B. Gillespie

LEXINGTON — Zella Briggs Gillespie, 88, formerly of Mount Moriah Drive, died Saturday (Aug. 18, 2001) at Centerclair Nursing Home.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Davidson Funeral Home chapel.

Visitation: At the funeral home after the service.

Memorials: Donor’s choice.

 

Garland C. Humphries

LEXINGTON — Garland Clyde Humphries, 93, Southview Road, died Tuesday (Aug. 21, 2001) at his home.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Piedmont Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Southview Road.

Lucille Gilmore Jones

The funeral will be Saturday for Lucille Gilmore Jones, 76, 424 Best St., who died Monday (Aug. 20, 2001) at her home.

Born May 9, 1925, in Rowan County, Mrs. Jones is a daughter of the late Rev. George P. Gilmore and Annie Bell Gist Gilmore. She was a graduate of Price High School, received a bachelor of arts degree from Livingstone College and a master’s degree from North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro. She did further studies at Columbia University, Temple University and New York University.

She taught at River Elementary School, Beaufort, for 20 years, where she was a basketball coach, chairman of the primary grades and a member of the Beaufort County Teacher’s Choir.

She taught for 27 years at Cleveland Elementary School before her retirement.

Mrs. Jones was a member of the PTA, School Base and Teacher Assistant Team committees; Rowan-Salisbury Unit of the North Carolina Teachers Association and the National Education Association. She represented the Rowan-Salisbury Schools as a delegate to the North Carolina Teachers Convention.

A member of Soldiers Memorial AME Zion Church, she was a member and former president of the Lay Council. She was involved with the Parent Body Missionary of the WHOMS, senior choir, president of the associate trustees, on Stewardess Board 28 and was director of education.

Mrs. Jones was director of youth for the WesternNorth Carolina Conference of the AME Zion Church and a member of the Life Members Council.

She was also a member of Rose of Sharon Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Salisbury Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Her husband,Willie Jones, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Lonnie Jones, of the home; daughters Diedre Redd, Salisbury, and Eidre Fantt, of the home; brothers George Gilmore Jr., Philadelphia, Pa., Steve Gilmore, Salisbury, Frederick Gilmore, St. Albans, N.Y., Samuel Gilmore, Flushing, N.Y. and Leon Gilmore, Harrisburg; cousins reared in the home, Donald Gist, Brooklyn, N.Y., and William Hickman, Bennettsville, S.C.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Saturday, Soldiers Memorial AME Zion Church, conducted by Dr. Murray L. Edward. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Diedre Redd, 429 Best St.

Mitchell &Fair Funeral Service is in charge.

 

 

Alva V. Lewis

KANNAPOLIS — Alva V. Lewis, 79, 7947 Arizona Place, died Tuesday (Aug. 21, 2001) at his home.

Larry Mallett

EAST SPENCER —The funeral will be Friday for Larry Mallett, 51, 918 Cedar St., who died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after two weeks of serious illness.

Born March 5, 1950, in New York City, Mr. Mallett was a son of Grace McGurry Goins, of the home, and the late Amos Mallett. He was a graduate of Dunbar High School and was last employed at Cone Mills.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include sons Demarko Sturdivant, Salisbury, and Larry and Billy Ford, both of East Spencer; brother Gary Mallett, East Spencer; and sisters Betty Hubbard, Jamaica, N.Y., and Patricia Corpening, East Spencer.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home chapel, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Rollins Graham. Burial,Oakwood Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

 

Ralph Morris

KANNAPOLIS —The funeral will be Thursday for Ralph Woodrow Morris, 89, 302 William St., who died Tuesday (Aug. 21, 2001) after seven years of declining health and eight months of serious illness.

Born May 29, 1912, in Madison County,Ga., Mr. Morris was a son of the late Samuel Claud and Pearl Verna Thompson Morris. He retired from Cannon Mills plant 1 and was a member of Centerview Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Willie Mae Dudley Morris and Gladys Bonds Morris.

Survivors include daughter Phyllis Morris Shirley-Ritchie, Kannapolis; son Vernon Morris, Jacksonville, Fla.; sister Myrtha Morris, Kannapolis; brothers Sam Morris, Charlotte, and Willard Morris, Richfield; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Thursday, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. John Sell, Hospice of Cabarrus County chaplain.

Visitation: 5:30-7 today, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Phyllis Morris Shirley-Ritchie, 304 William St.

CLEVELAND — Clyde L. Wilhelm, 71, Cleveland, died Wednesday (Aug. 22, 2001) at Davis Medical Center, Statesville.
