Albert ‘Pete’ Baker

MOORESVILLE — Albert Francis “Pete” Baker, died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001).

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, First PresbyterianChurch. Burial, Glenwood Cemetery.

Visitation:1:30-2 p.m. Wednesday at the church parlor. At other times, the family will be at the home.

Cavin-Cook Funeral Home is in charge.

Robert Lee Allen

The funeral will be Thursday for Robert Lee Allen, 78, 313 Scott Road, Dunn’s Mountain, who died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at Hefner VAMedical Center after a period of declining health.

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Paul Jones. Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury. Military rites by Salisbury-Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

 

Donna L. Bernhardt

ROCKWELL —Donna Joyce Ludwig Bernhardt, 58, Rockwell, who died Monday (Aug. 20, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

BornSept. 5, 1942, in Rowan County, Mrs. Bernhardt was a daughter of the late Cohen Chester and Ida Ruth Peeler Ludwig. She was a 1960 graduate of East Rowan High School and a graduate of Pembroke State University.

She taught kindergarten through third grade in the Hoke and Rutherford county schools. A member of Shiloh United Church of Christ, Faith, she was a former choir director at First United Methodist Church, Raeford.

Survivors include husband Floyd Gilbert Bernhardt, whom she married Aug. 4, 1962; sons Van Ludwig Bernhardt, Salisbury, and Gil “Brit” Bernhardt, Bostic; brother Neil Cohen Ludwig, Chicago,Ill.; sisters Patty June Ludwig Jung, Buies Creek, and Nan Ludwig Jansson, Alpharetta, Ga.; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Shiloh United Church of Christ, Faith, conducted by the Rev. Larry Bolick. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home.

Bessie Brown

KANNAPOLIS — Bessie Bostian Brown, 91, Charlotte Elderly TLC, formerly of Oakdale Avenue, died Saturday (Aug. 18, 2001) at Mercy Hospital,Charlotte.

Born Oct. 1, 1909, in Rowan County, Mrs. Brown, a daughter of the late George and Fannie Overcash Bostian, was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church.

She retired after 40 years fromCannon Mills Plant 4, where she was an overedger in the washcloth department.

Her husband, James M. Brown, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son James “Jim” M. Brown Jr., Charlotte; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Larry Bost.

Visitation:None.

Lady’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Delores H. Byerly

LEXINGTON —Delores Ann Perkins Hanson Byerly, 69, Mize Road, died Monday (Aug. 20, 2001) at Lexington Memorial Hospital after a month of illness.

Services: 4 p.m. Wednesday, Davidson Funeral Home chapel.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home on Mize Road.

Creston ‘Chick’ Erwin

KANNAPOLIS —Creston “Chick” Holmes Erwin, 88, 908 Oakwood Ave., died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001)at Five Oaks Nursing Center,Concord.

Garland ‘Zip’ Fowler

Garland Francis “Zip”Fowler, 56, 125 Will Black Road, died Monday (Aug. 20, 2001) at his home after eight weeks of serious illness.

Born Jan. 24, 1945, in Forsyth County, Mr. Fowler, a son of the late Roland and Leotha Dulin Fowler, was a graduate of Central Davie High School. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Retired from Hefner VAMedical Center, he was a former member of St. John’s AMEZion Church.

Survivors include wife Carolyn Blackwell Fowler; son Jeffery Chunn, Mocksville; daughter Jennifer Chunn, Mocksville; brother Robert Hogue, Cleveland; sister Valerie Chunn, Clemmons; and two grandchildren.

Agnes Krider Gunter

MOORESVILLE —Agnes Krider Gunter, 93, died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Gunter was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John B. Krider of Salisbury. She moved to Mooresville in 1920 with her late husband, Charles W. Gunter.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Mooresville, Afternoon Book Club of Salisbury and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Survivors include son Richard B.Gunter, Cornelius; three granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Thursday, First PresbyterianChurch, Mooresville. Burial at Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: In the church parlor after the memorial service.

James ‘Jake’ Heath Jr.

SPENCER — The funeral will be Thursday for James “Jake” Heath Jr., 85, Magnolia Gardens, who died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at the nursing facility.

Born July 7, 1916, in Union County, Mr. Heath was a son of the late Isonia Heath Massey. He attended Dunbar High School, East Spencer. He retired from Duke Power Co., Buck Steam Plant and was a member of the North Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Survivors include brother Joe Lewis Ferguson, Salisbury; and sisters Gertrude Brown and Pearl Oglesby, both of Salisbury, and Lorene Carter, Farrockaway, N.Y.

Services: Graveside, 10 a.m. Thursday, National Cemetery, Brenner Ave., Salisbury, conducted by Robert Reese. Military rites by Veterans Service Council.

Visitation: The body may be viewed at Rowan Funeral Service, Salisbury. The family will be at the home of Gertrude Brown, 1116 Kenly St., Salisbury.

 

Everett L. Kerns

Everett Legrande Kerns, 49, 208 Partee St., died Monday (Aug. 20, 2001) at his home.

LEXINGTON — W. Monroe Lee, 75, West Holly Grove Road, died Monday (Aug. 20, 2001) at his home.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Davidson Funeral Home chapel.Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

 

Ella E. McCorkle

LEXINGTON —Ella Elizabeth McCorkle, 82, South Hargrave Street, died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at Lexington Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

Services: 11 a.m.Wednesday, Davidson Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of daughter Edith McBride, 18 Gate Circle, Lexington.

 

Harold P. Simpson

Harold P. Simpson, a former Salisbury resident, died Friday (Aug. 17, 2001), in Anchorage, Alaska, of cancer.

Born Nov. 8, 1930, in Salisbury, Mr. Simpson was a son of Mack Patterson Simpson and Eulah Reavis Simpson. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950.

Mr. Simpson was a telecommunications specialist in the Air Force and achieved the rank of master sergeant before he retired in 1973. His tours of duty included Saudi Arabia and Alaska, where he eventually settled.

Mr. Simpson obtained an associates degree in accounting from the University of Alaska. After his retirement from the Air Force, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service until he retired in 1999.

Survivors include wife Blanche Mugford Simpson, whom he met and married in 1953, during a tour of duty in Newfoundland, Canada; sons David Simpson, Anchorage, and Robert Simpson, Phoenix, Ariz.; daughters Donna Vincent and Debbie Silver, both of Anchorage, Alaska; sisters Lottie Wood, Salisbury, and Margaret Wells, Columbia, S.C. ; brothers Harry Simpson, Salisbury, Carver Simpson, Wenatchee, Wash., and J.B. Simpson; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service today at St. Patrick’s Parish in Anchorage, Alaska.

Clifford B. Stover

CHINA GROVE —Clifford Buford Stover, 58, 620 Bostian Road, died Monday (Aug. 20, 2001) at his home after 11 months of illness.

Born Feb. 13, 1943, in Clear Creek, W.Va., Mr. Stover, a son of the late French Earl and Hazel Stover, was a graduate of Clear Fork High School, Clear Fork, W.Va. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a Baptist. Retired due to ill health, he was formerly employed with Kannapolis Service Co.

Survivors include fiance Dianne Shoe and her daughter Lee-Anne Shoe; son David Stover, Bradley, W.Va.; stepdaughter Denise Sickles, Beckley,W.Va.; sisters Nola Lambert, West Virginia, and Maggie Bishop, Port Charlotte, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 3:30 p.m. Thursday, West Lawn Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Dean Hunter.

Visitation: 7-9 Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home,Kannapolis. At other times, the family will be at the home on Bostian Road.

LEXINGTON — Patty Gargis Wall, 68, Lake Drive, died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at Forsyth Medical Hospital, Winston-Salem, following a brief illness.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, First Reformed United Church of Christ chapel. Inurnment, church columbarium.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home on Lake Drive.

Veta M. Yarbrough

LEXINGTON —Veta Veigh Myers Yarbrough, 90, Hargrave Road, died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at Lexington Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.
