Robert Lee Allen

Robert Lee Allen, 78, 313 Scott Road, Dunn’s Mountain, died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury, after a period of declining health.

Born Feb. 27, 1923, in Rowan County, Mr. Allen was a son of Frena Allen McKenzie Oglesby, Salisbury, and the late Lee McKenzie. He was educated in the Rowan County schools and retired from BeckEngraving Co.

A former member of New Zion Baptist Church, Dunn’s Mountain, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Jessie A. Bullock

Jessie Alton Bullock, 78, Salisbury, died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at his home.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Richard ‘Dick’ Connell

ALBEMARLE — Richard Douglas “Dick” Connell, 75, 619 N. Sixth St., died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001).

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, First Presbyterian Church.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, HartsellFuneral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home on North Sixth Street.

 

Brenda Harris Finger

LANDIS — Brenda Gail Harris Finger, 52, 706 W. Rice St., died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center,Salisbury, after 14 months of serious illness.

Born May 6, 1949, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Finger was a daughter of Earl F. “Jack” Harris, Landis, and the late Peggye Howard Harris. She was a 1967 graduate of South Rowan High School and received a BA degree from Catawba College, Salisbury.

Employed by Duke Power Co. for 30 years, she was a team leader. She was a member of Sandy Ridge AMEZion Church and their Trustee Board, Parent Body Missionary society, Missionary Choir, Victory Choir, Life Members Council, Stewardess Board No. 1, Lay Council, and the kitchen, hospital and hospitality committees.

Mrs. Finger was also a member of Kannapolis Rotary, and was the secretary/treasurer for Credit Professionals.

She was reared in the home of an aunt, Mary Elizabeth Lipe, who died in 1989.

Survivors include son Paul Edward Finger,Salisbury; brother Tony K. Harris, Charlotte; an uncle, Ira Frankin Lipe, Landis, in whose home she was reared; and two grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sandy Ridge AMEZion Church, conducted by the Rev. Bobby L. Smith. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 3 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Doris W. Harrelson

LEXINGTON — Doris Leona Walser Harrelson, 68, East Center Street, died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Friendship United Methodist Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of daughter Jayne Sechrest, 314 Will Jose Drive.

James Heath

James Heath, 1116 Kenly St., died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at Magnolia Gardens, Spencer, after an extended illness.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

 

William ‘Bill’ Hess

William Oscar “Bill” Hess, 75, 211 Ridge Ave., Wiley School Apartments, died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at his home after four years of declining health.

Born Sept. 13, 1925, in Salisbury, Mr. Hess, a son of the late John Lee and Madge Pauline Wilkerson Hess, was educated in the Salisbury city schools. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Self-employed as a painter, after he retired he worked at Service Distributor Gas Station. He was a former member of North Main Methodist Church, Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342 and Hudson Miller Tatum VFWPost 3006.

Survivors include daughter Amy J. Hess, Salisbury.

Services: The body will be cremated.

Visitation: The family will be at the home of Amy Hess, 1423 Filbert St.

Kinda Kay Love

ALBEMARLE — Kinda Kay Love, 28, Robert Thompson Group Home, died Saturday (Aug. 18, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Norview Cemetery, Norwood.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of father Ronnie C. Love, 5379 Rushin Road, Stanfield.

 

Larry Mallett

EAST SPENCER —Larry Mallett, 51, 918 Cedar St., died Sunday (Aug., 19, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after several months of declining health.

Nona Ballard Miller

MOORESVILLE — Nona Ballard Miller, 94, 509 N. Church St., died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at Genesis Eldercare.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Neill Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Darel Robert Parcell

BADIN — Darel Robert Parcell, 77, 121 Pine St., died Saturday (Aug. 18, 2001).

Born Oct. 21, 1923, in Virginia, Mr. Parcell, a son of the late Tobias and Anna Mae Mustard Parcell, served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired as the owner/ operator of Diamond Limousine Service, Washington, D.C.

Survivors include wife Lillian Dorsey Parcell; son Thomas R. Parcell, Woodstock,Ga.; and two grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Stanly Funeral Home, Albemarle.

Catherine B. Safrit

Catherine Bernhardt Safrit, 88, Salisbury, died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after three days of serious illness.

Born March 14, 1913, in Rowan County, Mrs. Safrit was a daughter of the late Joseph Clarence and Mary Upright Bernhardt. She was a graduate of Boyden High School and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

A teacher, she taught junior high school for nearly 40 years. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where she was active in phases of the church.

Mrs. Safrit helped organize and served in all phases of the Rowan County Literacy Council and later the North Carolina Literacy Council.

Her husband, Robert Glenn Safrit, died Aug. 28, 1997.

Survivors include son Christopher “Chris” Robert Safrit, Misenheimer; daughter Glenna Safrit Sears, Raleigh; and one granddaughter.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. William Ketchie, senior pastor. Members of Rowan County Literacy Council, students and tutors will be seated as a group at the church. Burial will be in the family plot in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight,Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home.

James Clay Walker

CHINA GROVE —James Clay Walker, 93, formerly of China Grove, died in Kingsport, Tenn., at the home of daughter Nancy Walker Jones.

Born July 18, 1908, in Landis, Mr. Walker was the son of the late Martin Odell and Daisy Ola Roberts Walker. He attended Asheville Farm School and graduated from Christ School, an Episcopal boarding school in Arden. While attending Duke University, he played basketball and football. He graduated from Wingate College, where he was a member of the national champion junior college basketball team.

At the age of 75, he retired from Cannon Mills, Kannapolis, after 57 years. He was active in Boy Scouts of America, was a member and past president of the Rotary Club, and was junior warden and an active member of Christ Episcopal Church, Concord. He attended Bridwell Heights Presbyterian Church, Kingsport, Tenn.

Survivors, in addition to his daughter, include wife of 68 years Lois Brower Walker, Kingsport, Tenn.; sons Dr.James Calvin Walker, Baltimore, Md., and David Shelley Walker, Paris, France; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Saturday, Bridwell Heights Baptist Church, Kingsport, Tenn., conducted by the Rev. Larry Ball.

Visitation: The family will be at the home of Nancy Walker Jones, 1053 Rotherwood Drive, Kingsport, Tenn.

Oak Hill Funeral Home, Kingsport, Tenn., is in charge.

Jerry M. Walters

LEXINGTON —Jerry Mitchell Walters, 48, Conrad Hill Mine Road, died Sunday (Aug. 19, 2001) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after six months of illness.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Davidson Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home on Conrad Hill Mine Road.
