LEXINGTON — Gladys Hardison Ange, 78, Lexington, died Saturday (Aug. 11, 2001) at Golden Age Nursing Home after an extended illness.

Services: 2 today, Davidson Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Zola Y. Beck

LEXINGTON —Zola Mae Young Beck, 89, North County Home Road, died Monday (Aug. 13, 2001)at her home.

Services: 4 p.m. Wednesday, Mount Tabor United Church of Christ. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home.

Norman F. Brinkley

KANNAPOLIS — Norman Franklin Brinkley, 81, 106 N. East Ave., a retired captain of the Kannapolis Police Department, died Monday (Aug. 13, 2001) at his home.

Lady’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Emma Griffin Helms

The funeral will be Wednesday for Emma Ann Griffin Helms, 86, 650 Rimer Road, who died Monday (Aug. 13, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born June 7, 1815, in Union County, Mrs Helms, a daughter of the late Calvin and Cleo Elizabeth Williams Griffin, was educated in the Union County schools. She was a member of Phaniels Baptist Church and the Golden Circle Sunday school class.

A former dental assistant, she was employed by Dr. George Spiegel Dentistry in Maryland.

Her husband,Leonard Lee Helms, died in 1974.

Survivors include daughter Jean H. Bishop,Salisbury; sisters Rebecca Trexler, Rockwell, and Betty Barber, Mooresville; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Phaniels Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Michael Taylor. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30; Golden Circle Sunday School Class will be seated as a group. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home,China Grove.

 

Ruth Heglar Ketchie

GASTONIA —Ruth Heglar Ketchie, 86, Armstrong Park Road, died Sunday (Aug. 12, 2001) at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

Born April 21, 1915, in Rowan County, Mrs. Ketchie, a daughter of the late Conrad and Anna Bradshaw Heglar, was a homemaker. She was a member of Jones Memorial United Methodist Church, Mooresville.

A son, Allen Ray Ketchie, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Shirley K. Barlow, Gastonia, Carolyn K. Groom, Savannah, Ga., and Brenda K. King, Cornelius; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jones Memorial United Methodist Church, Mooresville, conducted by the Rev. Jack Kayler. Burial, Centenary United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Brenda King, 20901 Decora Drive, Cornelius.

Margaret Laurents

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral is tonight for Margaret Barton Laurents, 75, Kannapolis, who died Sunday (Aug. 12, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born May 25, 1926, in Minneapolis, Minn., Mrs. Laurents was a daughter of the late Raymond and Zora Barton.

Her husband, Alfred Laurents, died in 1990.

Survivors include sons Michael Lee Van Dusen, Kannapolis; sister Marcella Polnasczek, Minneapolis, Minn.; stepsons John Laurents, Matthews, and Charles Laurents, Arlington, Texas; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 8 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Karl Aschmann.

Visitation: 7-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Margaret M. Leafe

KANNAPOLIS —Margaret Mullis Leafe, 81, 304 E. Fourth St., died Monday (Aug. 13, 2001)at Transitional Health Services.

Born April 7, 1919, in Caldwell County, Mrs. Leafe was a daughter of the late James Atlas and Lillie Rebecca Mullis. She retired from Cannon Mills plant 1 No. 5 weave room.

An active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, she was involved with the United Methodist Women and Exodus Sunday School Class.

Her husband,Sidney Leafe, died Aug. 4, 1975.

Survivors include daughters Patricia Leafe Miller and Sydney Leafe Yow, both of Kannapolis, and Rebecca Leafe Johnson, China Grove; son Harry Bruce Leafe, Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Wednesday, Trinity United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Pat Purdy and the Rev. Sandy Yow. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 3-4 p.m. Wednesday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Sydney Leafe Yow, 308 Idlewood Drive.

Ersell Love Little

KANNAPOLIS — ErsellLove Little, 94, 1330 Fifth St. N.E. No. 71, Hickory, formerly of Barlow Street, died Monday (Aug. 13, 2001) at Big Elm Nursing Center.

Born Oct. 30, 1906, in Union County, Mrs. Little was the daughter of Charlie and Eda Griffin and the adopted daughter of John A. and Minnie Love. She was reared in Stanfield.

A member of First Evangelical Methodist Church, she retired fromCannon Mills Co. No. 2 spinning room.

A daughter, Audrey Spears, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughter Doris Elaine Canup, Kannapolis; son B.D. Little, Hickory; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday,First Evangelical Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Rick Dawson and the Rev. Billy Carey.Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

MOORESVILLE — Gloria Jean Robinson Overcash, 51, Shinnville Road, died Sunday (Aug. 12, 2001) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Patricia Cook Rice

RICHFIELD — Patricia Amanda Cook Rice, 61, 108 Bradford St., died Tuesday (Aug. 14, 2001) at her home.

Born Feb. 5, 1940, in Gastonia, Mrs. Rice was a daughter of the late John Wesley and Elizabeth Mary Roberts Cook. She was a member of Paul’s Crossing Baptist Church.

A homemaker, she was a knitter at Mount Pleasant Hosiery Mill.

Her husband, Ralph Preston Rice, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Jesse Oscar Burton, Misenheimer; daughters Jessica Eugenia “Genia” Efird, Gold Hill, and Martha Sue Burton, Richfield; brothers Arthur Eugene Cook,Troy, Mo., and Walter Lee Cook, Bossier City, La.; sister Linda Fowler, Columbia, Ga.; and seven grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Paul’s Crossing Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mark Little, the Rev. Yates Brooks, the Rev. Furman Wilhoit and the Rev. Jessie Dennis.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. friday, HartsellFuneral Home, Albemarle.At other times the family will be at the home on Bradford Street.
