James Anthony

KANNAPOLIS — James Gilbert Anthony, 71, Avante Nursing Center, Concord, formerly of 922 Indiana St., died Thursday (Aug. 9, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born in Rowan County on Sept. 8, 1929, he was a son of the late Eugene Anthony and Martha Allison Harrison. He was a 1948 graduate of G.W. Carver High School.

He was a member of Bethel AME Zion Church. He attended Modern Barber College and had been employed at Cannon Mills prior to his illness.

Survivors include wife Bettye R. Anthony, Spencer; sons James G. Anthony Jr., Kannapolis, and Jerry Moody, Charlotte; seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, Bethel AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Massey. Burial, 11 a.m. Wednesday, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 3 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Other times, the family will be at the home of James “Butch” and Kay Anthony, 5620 Charlie Walker Road.

Clark Funeral Home is in charge.

 

John Clement Brown

John Clement Brown, 88, Boone, and formerly of Salisbury, died Friday (Aug. 10, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Aug. 9, 1913, in Salisbury, he was a son of the late Laura Lingle and John Daniel Brown.

He graduated from Boyden High School and was employed for over 50 years as a route manager for the Salisbury Post.

Mr. Brown was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Boone, and a former member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Salisbury. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias.

He was preceded in death by a grandson and a great-grandson.

Survivors include wife Beatrice Y. Brown, whom he married Oct. 25, 1935; daughters Corinna B. Gardner and Joan B. Miller, both of Salisbury; brother George Kenneth Brown, Salisbury; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Monday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Timothy Smith, pastor, Grace Lutheran Church, Boone, and Vicar Tony Bradshaw.

Visitation: None. The body will remain at Summersett Funeral Home until the service.

Mary G. Byerly

LEXINGTON — Mary Elizabeth Grubb Byerly, 74, Hill Side Drive, died Friday (Aug. 10, 2001) at Sunbridge Nursing Home after several years of declining health.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Spruce Street Baptist Church. Burial, Greers Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation: 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the church. Other times, the family will be at the home.

Davidson Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Elmon F. Chance

RICHFIELD — Elmon Franklin Chance, 89, 24180 Rogers Road, died Saturday (Aug. 11, 2001) at home.

Born June 3, 1912, in Stanly County, he was a son of the late Londa Barringer and John Chance.

He retired from Wiscassett Mills after 52 years as a card grinder. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church and a deacon emeritus. He was church custodian for 14 years.

A son, Reginald “Reggie” Lamar Chance, died April 4, 1999.

Survivors include wife, Onnie Mae Crowell Chance; son Larry Chance, Albemarle; brother Royce Chance, Albemarle; sisters Hazel Chance, Reba Barbee and Helen Lowder, all of Albemarle; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Hartsell Funeral Chapel, conducted by Dr. Gary Pinion and the Rev. Sid Martin. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home.

Jimmy Cockrell

NEW LONDON — Jimmy Wayne Cockrell, 51, 1175 Lake Shore Drive, died Friday (Aug. 10, 2001) at his home.

Born Nov. 10, 1949, in Rocky Mount, he was a son of the late Homer Lee and Ella Lee Carpenter Cockrell. A self-employed brick mason, he was a Vietnam veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include wife Sallie Ann Proctor Cockrell; daughters Joy Caissie, Albemarle, and Dawn Baldwin; brothers Franklin Cockrell, Reidsville, and Jack Cockrell, Rocky Mount; sisters Frances Powell, Cary; and Phyllis Stone, Emerald Isle; and four grandchildren.

Service: Graveside, 10 a.m. Monday, National Cemetery, VA Medical Center, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Michael D. Brewer. Military rites by Albemarle-Stanly County DAV.

Visitation: 6 to 8 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of daughter Joy Caissie, 2545 Badin Road, Albemarle.

Ruby Mundy Freeze

MOORESVILLE — Ruby Mundy Freeze, 79, Hwy. 21 S., died Saturday (Aug. 11, 2001) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 17, 1921, in Mecklenburg County, she was the daughter of the late Oliver Dock and Addie Hager Mundy. She worked at Burlington Industries for 43 years.

She was a member of Southside Baptist Church, a Sunday School teacher, member of the Prayer Group II, active in the WMU, the Sunshine Club, and sang in the church choir for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hillard Ray Freeze, and son Phillip Ray Freeze.

Survivors include son Craig B. Freeze, Mooresville; sister Crosby Mundy Turner, Ypsilanti, Mich.; and three grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Southside Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Steven Gouge and the Rev. Hal D. Greene. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 tonight, at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.

Hubert Gee

KANNAPOLIS — Thomas Hubert Gee, 88, 485 Gee Drive, died Friday (Aug. 10, 2001) at his home after three years of declining health and eight weeks of serious illness.

Born Jan. 22, 1913, in Athens, Ga., Mr. Gee was the son of the late Thomas and Amanda Thomas Gee. He retired from Cannon Mills Plant 4.

He was a charter member of Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, a Master Gardener of Cabarrus County, member of Piedmont Day Lily Club and the American Hemorcallis Society.

His wife, Stella Milam Gee, died in 1991; a grandchild also preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughters Brenda Daniels and Wilma Erwin, Kannapolis, and Joyce Gee, of the home; sons Thomas Lester Gee and Harold Gee, both of Kannapolis; sister Anna Bell Navaro, Gold Hill; 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Howard Tyas. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30.

Visitation: 6 to 8 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home.

Earl Thomas Jenkins

CONCORD — Earl Thomas Jenkins, 71, 2520 Hickory Ave., died Saturday (Aug. 11, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center after 11 years of declining health.

Born Nov. 9, 1929, in Pageland, S.C., he was a son of the late John and Bertha Hewett Jenkins.

Mr. Jenkins retired in 1990 as an auto mechanic with Palmer Auto Sales and Service in Charlotte and also worked with Statesville Ave. Garage in Charlotte.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include wife Leanese Hilburn Jenkins; son Roger Jenkins, Kannapolis; daughters Janice Colman, Concord, and Diane Bowles, West Virginia; brothers Donald, Hazel, Broadus, and Henry Jenkins, all of Kannapolis, Joe Jenkins, Belmont, and Lonnie Henkins, Hamlet; sister Virginia Jones, Kannapolis; five grandchildren;and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Stan Welch. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Maudie D. Lewis

Maudie Mae Dunn Maynor Lewis, 93, 820 Klumac Road, died Friday (Aug. 10, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Lewis was a native of Montgomery County and retired from Randolph Hospital. She was a member of Fayetteville Street Baptist Church.

Her husband, Daniel Lewis, preceded her in death..

Survivors include a niece, four grandchildren, and a number of great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 today at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Adrian Pugh. Burial, Randolph Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1 today at the funeral home.

Betty Clary Newman

MOORESVILLE—Betty Clary Newman, 68, West Statesville Avenue, died Wednesday (Aug. 8, 2001) at her residence.

Born March 12, 1933, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of Della Fesperman Clary, Mooresville, and the late William Graham Clary.

She was the former office manager for Royal Typewriter in Charlotte and was a bookkeeper for the family business, Newman Building Co.

She was a member of Back Creek Presbyterian Church, Mount Ulla.

She was preceded in death by a grandson.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include husband John Worth Newman; sons John W. Newman Jr. and Jim Newman, both of Washington, and Jeff Newman, Mooresville; brother Joe Clary, Mooresville; sisters Joyce Weddington, China Grove, Iris Lowrance, Derita, and Pat Jones, Mooresville; two grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Friday. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

‘Bill’ Richardson

CHINA GROVE — William Allison “Bill” Richardson, 72, 225 Shue Road, died Friday (Aug. 10, 2001) at his home.

Born June 13, 1929, in Chesterfield County, S.C., he was the son of the late Griffin and Hattie Rachel Sellers Richardson.

He worked at China Grove Cotton Mill and in Thomasville and High Point at Amazon Cotton Mill and Blair Turning and Furnishing. He was a Korean War veteran of the U.S.Air Force.

His wife, Maude Estelle “Es” Richardson, died Sept. 22, 1991.

Survivors include stepdaughter Rachel Lindley, Salisbury; brother Donald Ray Richardson, Kannapolis; sisters Ella Louise Walker, Jacksonville, Fla., and Nina Sue Talavera, Modesto, Calif.; seven step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. John Melton. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6 to 7:30 tonight at the funeral Home. Other times, the family will be at the home of step-granddaughter Wanda Jenkins, 1590 Hurley School Road, Salisbury.

 

Thomas Sherrill

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Tuesday for Thomas Eugene “Fatback” Sherrill I, 57, 1433 Village Park Road, who died Thursday (Aug. 9, 2001) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Salisbury.

He had been seriously ill for several months.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Smith, pastor.

Visitation: 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church, prior to the service.

Noble & Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.
