Ruby S. Blackwelder

LEXINGTON — Ruby Lee Story Blackwelder, 80, Mendota Avenue, died Monday (Aug. 6, 2001) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a three-month illness.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Second Presbyterian Church. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Davidson Funeral Home.

 

Alice Riley Dellinger

The funeral will be Wednesday for Alice Riley Dellinger, 89, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Aug. 5, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Born Sept. 16, 1911, in Mecklenburg County, Mrs. Dellinger was a daughter of the late Robert Hellard and Annie Lillian Fite Riley. She was educated in the Mecklenburg County schools and was a graduate of Charlotte High School.

She retired after 30 years from Cannon Mills, Kannapolis, and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Salisbury for more than 50 years.

Husband Edward Marvin Dellinger died Nov. 29, 1988.

Survivors include daughters Paula Kenna, Yadkinville, Terry Wolff, Salisbury, and Ann Craig, Waxhaw; sisters Ruth Pigg, Midland, and Catherine Upright, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, First Presbyterian Church of Salisbury, conducted by Dr. Robert M. Lewis. Burial, family plot, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

 

Mary Nance Gibson

CHINA GROVE — Mary Louise Nance Gibson, 75, 522 Westside Circle, died Monday (Aug. 6, 2001) at her home.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Floyd Lee Hurlocker

CONCORD — Floyd Lee Hurlocker, 82, formerly of 24 Green Acres Circle, died Sunday (Aug. 5, 2001) at Britthaven of Charlotte after three years of declining health.

Born Aug. 24, 1918, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Hurlocker was the son of the late Luther Hurlocker and Mary Starnes Hurlocker. He was employed with Linn-Corriher Mills Inc. in Landis until his retirement.

Survivors include son John Lee Hurlocker, East Spencer; daughters Nila Jean Gilliam, Beckley, W.Va.; Patricia Ann Bell, Mount Airy; brothers Fred Hurlocker and Luther Ray Hurlocker, both of Mount Pleasant; sister Pauline Thomas, Concord; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Raymond Bailey. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. The family will be at the home of sister Pauline Thomas, 24 Green Acres Circle.

 

Carl Eugene Miller

Carl Eugene Miller, 83, Salisbury, died Monday (Aug. 6, 2001) at Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Lee Frank Morgan

Lee Frank Morgan, 74, 525 Stoner Morgan Road, died Sunday (Aug. 5, 2001) at his home after two months of serious illness.

Born Dec. 6, 1926, in Salisbury, Mr. Morgan was a son of the late Leroy and Theola House Morgan. A graduate of Dunbar High School, he received his Realtor’s license from Davidson County Community College. He was a self-employed carpenter, brick mason and cement finisher.

A lifetime member of Yadkin Grove Baptist Church, he was a member for 62 years and served as church janitor, bus driver, Sunday school teacher, senior choir member, trustee and ordained deacon, including chairman for 18 years. A veteran of the U.S. Army and a Shriner, he was a member of J.C. Price American Legion Post 107 and Eureka Scottish Rite Lodge 45.

Survivors include wife Sue Hoover Morgan; daughter Suzette Bailey, Salisbury; sister Lorraine Strawder, Granite Quarry; and a grandchild.

Services: 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev Joseph Parks. Burial, National Cemetery Annex, Hefner VA Medical Center, with military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

 

John Pittman

LANDIS — John Pittman, 73, 1120 Beaten Path Road, died Tuesday (Aug. 7, 2001) at his home.

Annie Laura Sonnet

CONCORD — The funeral will be Wednesday for Annie Laura “Jo” Plyler Sonnet, 501 Cold Springs Road, who died Sunday (Aug. 5, 2001) at the home of daughter Cindy S. Flowe, with whom she lived. She was in declining health for a number of years and seriously ill for a month.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Cold Springs Road.

Velma ‘Penny’ Weaver

LINWOOD — The funeral will be Wednesday for Velma “Penny” Brooks Weaver, 70, Linwood, who died Monday (Aug. 6, 2001) at her home after several years of declining health and a week of serious illness.

Born May 5, 1931, in Rowan County, Mrs. Weaver, a daughter of the late Arthur and Ann Chambers Brooks, was educated in the Rowan County schools. She retired from N.C. Finishing Co., and was a member of Christian Baptist Church.

Survivors include husband, W.C. “Dub” Weaver, whom she married May 17, 1949; sons Jerry Brooks, Henrettia, Ray Weaver, Salisbury, and Warren “Butch” Weaver,Yupon Beach; sister Betty Tilley, Linwood; and five grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Christian Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Sam Harvey, pastor. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home, Salisbury. At other times the family will be at the home.

Juanita Williams

SPENCER — Juanita Williams, 81, Spencer, died Tuesday (Aug. 7, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Bobby ‘B.J.’ Williams

The funeral will be Wednesday for Bobby James “B.J.” Williams, 57, Salisbury, who died Thursday (Aug. 2, 2001) at his home after a lengthy illness.

Born May 23, 1944, in Rowan County, Mr. Williams was a son of Bessie Gullett Williams Smith, Salisbury, and Arthur J. Williams, Laurinburg. He was educated in the Salisbury city schools.

A veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Samuel C. Hart American Legion Post 14.A member of the National Rifle Association, he retired as a painter.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, U.S. National Cemetery, VA Medical Center, conducted by the Rev. Joseph LaFrage, minister, Salisbury Church of God. Military rites by Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: None.

Elizabeth ‘Micky’ Furr

ALBEMARLE — Elizabeth Leigh “Micky” Tevepaugh Furr, 67, 628 Love St., formerly of Midland, died Saturday (Aug. 4, 2001) at her home.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord. Burial, West Concord Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home.

 

William Olly Glaspy

CLEVELAND — William Olly Glaspy, 66, of Frankfort, Ky., died Friday (Aug. 3, 2001).

Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Antioch Baptist Church.

Mary Sherrill Hager

MOORESVILLE — Mary Frances Sherrill Hager, 68, Mooresville, died Monday (Aug. 6, 2001) at her home.

Born Dec. 8, 1932, Mrs. Hager was a daughter of the late Tommy Sherrill and Nell Armstrong Wilson.

She retired from Burlington Mills in 1998 after 34 years and was a member of Southside Baptist Church, BMW Mission Group and Joy Sunday School Class.

Husband Lonnie Ray Hager and son Terry Hager preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Tommy Hager, Mooresville, and Tony and Gerry “Pudge” Hager, both of Mount Ulla; daughter Patricia Hager, Mooresville; sisters Margaret Bradshaw and Dorothy Alexander, both of Mooresville; and seven grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Southside Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. D. Steven Gouge.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.

Eugene Leslie Hill

Eugene Leslie Hill, 86, 615 W. Fisher St., died Monday (Aug. 6, 2001) at Brightmoor Nursing Center.

Born Sept. 22, 1914, in Cumberland Gap, Tenn., Mr. Hill was a son of the late John Emory and Lucy Eversole Hill.

Educated in the Cumberland Gap, Tenn., schools and the Civilian Conservation Corps, he was a civil engineer with the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge, Tenn., and later worked for Union Carbide for 27 years.

Mr. Hill served in the Marine Corps in World War II and was a member of the Oak Ridge, Tenn., congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and the Oak Ridge Jaycees.

Wife Imogene Ledger Hill died on Jan. 21, 1999, and daughter Mildred Stookesburry died in 1995.

Survivors include sons Leslie Ray Hill, Surfside Beach, S.C., James Edward Hill, La Follette, Tenn., and Amel Lee Hill, Mooresville; daughter Peggy Ann Fracker, Orlando, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services: A memorial service will be conducted later. The body has been cremated. Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

Visitation: None.

Harold ‘Coot’ Kearns

TROY — Harold E. “Coot” Kearns, 77, 177 Alexander Road, died Sunday (Aug. 5, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Stepbrother Jack Kearns lives in Badin.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Zion United Methodist Church. Entombment, Stanly Gardens of Memory Mausoleum. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m.

Myrtle Elizabeth Long

KANNAPOLIS — Myrtle Elizabeth Long, 94, formerly of 517 Kansas St., died Monday (Aug. 6, 2001) at Five Oaks Nursing Center.

Born Nov. 4, 1906, in China Grove, she was a daughter of the late James Sylvester and Frances Lillian VanPelt Long.

She worked for Cannon Mills Plant 1, No. 5 spool room, retiring in 1971 after 50 years. She was an active member of Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church.

Survivors include sister Nancy Long Yorke, Kannapolis.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Richard Rhodes. Burial, Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery, Concord.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Visitation: 12:45-1:45 p.m. Wednesday at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home of sister Nancy Yorke, 517 Kansas St.

Leila Suddeth

CLEVELAND — Leila W. Suddeth, 103, 110 Academy St., died Sunday (Aug. 5, 2001) at her home after a long illness.

Born in Blacksburg, S.C., Mrs. Suddeth was a daughter of the late Preston and Elizabeth Dempsey Wilson. She was a homemaker and member of North Pacolet Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by husband Esley Lee Suddeth, daughter Evelyn S. Lane and son John Preston “Jack” Suddeth.

Survivors include son Edward “Ed” Suddeth, Cleveland; eight grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Thursday, North Pacolet Baptist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Todd Joyner.

Visitation: 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Seawright Funeral Home, Inman, S.C. At other times, the families will be at their respective homes.

Otis Edward Thomas

ALBEMARLE — Otis Edward Thomas, 87, 620 Heathwood Drive, died Sunday (Aug. 5, 2001) at Forrest Oakes Healthcare Center.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sharon Memorial Park, Charlotte.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Midland. The family will be at the home of daughter Sibyl Williams, 24588 Strand Drive, Albemarle.
