Golf notebook: Staton, Dwiggins win tournament at Corbin Hills

Gerald Staton and Richard Dwiggins used a sparkling 12-under-par 60 score to take a stroke lead in the Summer Two-Man Mulligan Golf Tournament at Corbin Hills Club Saturday.

Trailing with an 11-under 61 are Keith Dorsett and Adam Jordan.

Next with 62s are Bruce Hawkins and Rex Davis, Terry Mulkey and Dusty Holder, Richard Cobb and Fitcher Wilkens and Randy Bingham and Junior Rabon.

The final round for the 60 teams will be played today, starting at 8:30 a.m. A breakfast is set for contestants at 7:30 at the Corbin Hills Clubhouse.

First-round results may be round in the Scoreboard on Page 2D.

KEPLEY GOLF: The second annual Bobby Kepley Memorial Tournament will be held at Rolling hills Golf club Saturday, Aug. 25 at 8:30 a.m.

Proceeds will go toward scholarships for a golfer at each of the five Rowan County schools.

The tournament will be a 4-man captain’s choice event. The fee is $40 per person or $160 per team.

Trophies will be given to the top four teams. Awards will be given to closest to the pin, longest drive for men and women and longest putt.

COUNTRY CLUB: The team of Bernice Lerner. Louise Walser, Shirley Terry and Rosemary Spain won the Country Club of Salisbury’s captain choice tournament Thursday.

There was a tie for second with the team of Joan Harris, Betty Brittain, Elaine Fuller, Ruth Meade and Liz Mayrand, along with the team of Jean Hill, Pat McGuire, Lois Goodman and Arlene Hankins.

HOLE-IN-ONE: China Grove’s Mike Clayton put some muscle behind a shot at Greene Oaks golf course in Concord.

He had a hole-in-one on No. 15, a 274-yard, par-4. Watching were Henry Biels, Hank Biels and Mike Tarlton.
