KANNAPOLIS — An 82-year-old Kannapolis woman died Friday in a near head-on collision on Lane Street.
Three people remain hospitalized after the grinding crash that demolished both cars.
Glennie Smith Spry of 1301 Stone Ave. was a passenger in a 1988 Buick driven by David Harwood Sr., 78, of Collins Street.
Officer W.E. Morgan said Harwood’s car was going north on Ruth Avenue and apparently didn’t stop at the intersection with Lane Street, a four-lane street.
Morgan said Harwood’s Buick made a very wide right turn crossing into the far side of Lane Street, and striking a 1991 Eagle driven by Trudi Herrin, 39, of Hamblin Court. The Herrin vehicle was going west on Lane Street.
Spry was dead at the scene.
The accident shocked the congregation of Franklin Heights Baptist Church where both Spry and Harwood were members. “The whole congregation is tore all to pieces,” said Hazel Roland, a longtime friend of Spry.
Roland said Harwood and Spry had both lost their spouses several years ago, and had been dating for sometime.
“She was a wonderful person, quite and always easy going,” said Roland.
Two others involved in the accident were in fair condition Saturday night.
Harwood, and Herrin were transported to NorthEast Medical Center.
Late Saturday, a nursing supervisor at NorthEast reported Harwood’s condition as fair and Trudi Herrin’s condition as good.
A passenger in the Herrin vehicle, Erica Herrin, 17, of Hamblin Court, was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
A spokesman at Carolinas Medical Center said she was in fair condition late Saturday.
Police are continuing to investigate the accident. No charges have been filed.
