Man dies in Florida diving accident

A Salisbury man died shortly before noon Saturday in an apparent scuba diving mishap.

James Lee Webb, 48, of Salisbury, died at Mariner’s Hospital in Key Largo, Fla.

A spokesman for the hospital said emergency medical service workers brought Webb to the hospital around 11 a.m.

Efforts to save him failed and he was pronounced dead.

The spokesman said emergency workers indicated that while diving he apparently came up too quickly and his body could not adjust to the rapid change in pressure.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

Webb was on a scuba diving trip to the Keys.

Officials in Key Largo apparently contacted local law enforcement officers to get in touch with Webb’s family.

Summersett Funeral Home in Salisbury is handling arrangements, which are incomplete.

Rev. William Ketchie, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where Webb and his family are members, said the family is in shock.

Ketchie said they had little information on what happened.

Law enforcement and emergency personnel in Key Largo were not immediately available to comment.
