West’s Sherina Steele gains track honor

BY ED DUPREE
SALISBURY POST

KANNAPOLIS — Sherina Steele of West Rowan swept all four of her events and repeated as the South Piedmont Conference’s Girls Track Player of the Year honor here Wednesday.

The meet started Tuesday, when it was delayed by rain, then finished up yesterday.

Steele, a sophomore, triple jumped 34 feet, long jumped 16-10 and had hurdles performances of 15.50 and 47.90 in the 100 and 300, respectively.

She’s now had seven first places and one second (100 hurdles) in the SPC meet in two years.

“I think that’s great, being that I am a sophomore,” said Steele, who led West’s girls to a third-place finish with 122 points behind Harding’s 195 and Northwest Cabarrus’ 128.

Steele says the long jump is her favorite event and that she has a goal of leaping 19-5 before she graduates. Her goals in the other events are 37 feet in the triple jump, 14.0 in the 100 hurdles and 45.0 in the 300 hurdles.

Steele took a third place in the 300 hurdles in the state 3A meet last year and hopes to compete in all four events this season.

“If I don’t make it in all four,I hope to make it in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and long jump.I’m not too hot on that triple jump,” she said.

Coach Mike Young said of Steele, “She won all four events. She did what she was supposed to do. If we had a few like her, we would be really tough.”

Other first places for Rowan County girls were a shot put of 33-5 by West’s Desiree Charleston, a discus toss of 92-9 by East Rowan’s Jordan Huffman and a pole vault of 9 feet by teammate Mikal Ann Fesperman.

Huffman and Fesperman led East to a fourth-place finish with 83 points.

A.L. Brown’s girls took sixth with 39.

Northwest’s boys won with 135.5 points to 113.5 for West’s Falcons. A.L. Brown (60) was fifth, and East (52) was eighth.

Coach Ralph Ellis’ West boys took six first places — Brant Marlin with a shot put of 49-8, Steven Meseroll with a discus throw of 136 feet, Mark Sturgis with a triple jump of 42-4 1/2, Michael Ellison with a time of 52.34 in the 400, Matt Smith with a 14.93 clocking in the 110 hurdles and the 400 relay unit with a time of 44.40.

“I’m real pleased with the meet,” said Ellis. “We had a lot of individual first places. I’m real happy with the performances today.”

The scoring system through eight places was 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1, and Ellis thought that hurt his team.

“That was the first time we’ve ever used that format in the conference. It’s not used in the regionals, and it’s not used in the state. Six places, I thought we had little better chance,” he said.

East’s Jonathan Adams triumphed in the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.31.

Northwest’s Phillip Stafford, a junior, was chosen Boys Player of the Year after winning both the 800 and 1600 and finishing second in the 3200.

Named Coaches of the Year were Keith Rhoney of the Northwest boys and Arthur Tucker of the Harding girls.
