‘Madge’ S. Brogdon

LEXINGTON —Mildred “Madge” Smith Brogdon, 60, Chapel Drive, died Wednesday (April 25, 2001) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem, after two months of serious illness.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Davidson Funeral Home chapel.Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home on Chapel Drive.

‘Cedar’ Everhart

LEXINGTON — Melvin Max “Cedar” Everhart, 76, East Green Hill Apartments, died Wednesday (April 25, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after two weeks of serious illness.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Davidson Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery. Military rites by VFWPost 3074.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Nancy L.Everhart, 8 Jamica Drive, Lexington.

 

Richard Cleve Gobble

EAST SPENCER — Richard Cleve Gobble, 82, East Spencer, died Wednesday (April 25, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after several years of declining health.

Born July 31, 1918, in Rowan County, Mr. Gobble was a son of the late William Cleve and Sarah Sally Brooks Gobble. He was educated in Rowan County schools and served in the U.S. Army’s 30th Division during World War II.

A retired bus driver, he had worked for Duke Power Co., Moore Brothers Bus Lines and the city of Salisbury bus service.

He was a member and deacon at East Spencer First Baptist Church and was a member of the Spencer Moose Lodge, Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post and Woodmen of the World.

Survivors include wife Virginia Smith Gobble, whom he married June 20, 1944; daughters Linda Shelton, Colfax, and Jolet Stanley, Chapel Hill; sister Katherine Cornatzer, Lincolnton; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Lyerly Funeral Home chapel, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Vance Edwards and the Rev. Jimmie Deal. Burial, family plot at Trading Ford Baptist Church cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home in Salisbury. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home in East Spencer.

James A. Grubb Jr.

TARRANT, Ga. — James A. Grubb Jr., 49, Tarrant, formerly of Salisbury, N.C., died Wednesday (April 25, 2001) at Cooper-Green Hospital, Birmingham.

John’s-Ridout’s Mortuary, Birmingham, is in charge.

 

Frances S. Honeycutt

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Friday for Frances Evelyn Sides Honeycutt, 77, 503 S. Bostian St., who died Wednesday (April 25, 2001) at her home.

Born Nov. 22, 1923, in Stanly County, Mrs.Honeycutt, a daughter of the late Ralph B. and Anna Whitley Sides, was educated in the Rowan County schools. She retired from China Grove Cotton Mill and was a member of First Baptist Church.

Her husband,D. B. Honeycutt, died Aug. 3, 1991.

Survivors include daughter Mary Anna Vereen, China Grove; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home chapel, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Steve Wilson. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on South Bostian Street.

Vernon Johnson

The funeral will be Friday for Vernon Johnson, 68, 211 Ridge Ave., who died Tuesday (April 24, 2001) at Brightmoor Nursing Center.

Born April 24, 1933, Mr. Johnson was educated in the Rowan County schools and attended Dunbar High School, East Spencer.

He was a member of New Zion Baptist Church. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during the Korean War.

Survivors include son Gary Johnson, Virginia; daughter Laura Bost, China Grove; brothers Paul Johnson,Tennessee, and Marvin Johnson, New York; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 12 p.m. Friday, Mitchell and Fair Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Paul Jones, pastor, New Zion Baptist Church. Burial, National Cemetery, Hefner VA Medical Center location, Salisbury. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 11:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

 

Lawrence Van Jones

EAST SPENCER — The funeral will be Saturday for Lawrence Van “Hatchet” Jones, 83, 512 Hall St., who died Tuesday (April 24, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a month of serious illness.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Northeast Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Salisbury, conducted by Robert Reece. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Veatus H. Koontz

LEXINGTON — Veatus Hanes Koontz, 79, formerly of West Gate Court, died Wednesday (April 25, 2001) at Sunbridge Nursing Care after several years of declining health.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of daughter Lucille Fletcher, 699 Hoover Road, Lexington.

 

Norman Andrew Luther

WINSTON-SALEM — The funeral will be Friday for Norman Andrew Luther, 69, 1010 E. 31st St., who died Tuesday (April 24, 2001) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.

Born April 24, 1932, in Rowan County, Mr. Luther, a son of the late William Andrew and Rettie Reeves Luther, attended Dunbar High School, East Spencer. He was employed at the Hall of Justice, Winston-Salem, and was a member of Carver Road Church of Christ.

Survivors include son Roscoe Burgess, Winston-Salem; daughters Lillie Nelson and Laura Bellanger, both of Winston-Salem; brother Clifford Luther, East Spencer; sisters Priscilla Parks, Hokey E. Luther, Carrie Wilson and Ruth Krider, all of Salisbury; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 12:30 p.m. Friday, Thomas Street Church of Christ, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. William Latten.Burial, Oakwood Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 12-12:30 p.m. Friday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home of Clifford Luther, 540 Heiligtown Road, East Spencer.

Clement H. McCombs, 58, 11 W. Horah St., died Wednesday (April 25, 2001) at Autumn Care of Salisbury.

‘Sonny’ Miller

KANNAPOLIS — Calvin L. “Sonny” Miller, 66, 2300 Fowler St., died Wednesday (April 25, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born July 20, 1934, in Rowan County, Mr. Miller was a son of the late Adam and Lola Shoemaker Miller. He was a member of Charity Baptist Church.

A retired car salesman, he was last employed at Salisbury Motor Co.

Survivors include wife Sybil Hudson Miller; and sister Colleen Poston, Fort Mill, S.C.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Calvary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. R.J. Hammond. Burial, West Concord Cemetery, Concord.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Fowler Avenue.

William Morgan, 58, died Wednesday (April 25, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

ALBEMARLE — Robert Dwight Morgan, 60, 1408 Kingsley Drive, died Wednesday (April 25, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Lois Cole Phillips

KANNAPOLIS — Lois Cole Phillips, 83, First Assembly Living Center, Concord, formerly of 407 S. East Ave., died Wednesday (April 25, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after two weeks of serious illness.

Born May 11, 1917, in Franklin County, Ga., Mrs. Phillips was a daughter of the late Raymond Cole and Mamie Snipes Cole Beauford. She was educated in the Middle River School, Franklin County, Ga. and Habersham College, Clarkesville, Ga.

A homemaker for most of her life, in her later years she worked in retail for the former Endicott-Johnson Co., Salisbury.

She and her husband Denver H. Phillips, to whom she was married for 61 years, traveled to 48 of the 50 United States and were active in the Golden Slippers Square Dance group.

An active participant in the senior centers in Kannapolis and Concord, she was a state finalist in speedwalking in the Senior Games.

She was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church, where she was active in the Ladies Adult Sunday school class.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include daughters Linda Phillips Schrum, Davidson, and Depy Phillips Adams, Charlotte; sister Frances Worthingotn, Greenwood, S.C.; brothers Alvin Cole, Kannapolis, Arnold Cole, Greenwood, S.C., and Rabun Cole, Ninety-Six, S.C.; one grandson; one stepgranddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Tim Jernigan. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2-3:30 p.m. Sunday at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home on South East Ave.

Forest Arthur Stoner

Forest Arthur Stoner, 83, Salisbury, died Wednesday (April 25, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
