KANNAPOLIS —Mollie James Martin Cannon, 89, 609 Old Centergrove Road, died Monday (April 23, 2001) at her home after two years of declining health and two months of serious illness.
Born March 10, 1912, in Alexander County, Mrs. Cannon, a daughter of the late Thomas L. and Linnie Dowell James, was self-educated. She was a member of Centerview Baptist Church.
She retired in 1972 from Cannon Mills Co. Plant 1 No. 6 weave room, where she had worked for many years.
Her first husband, Jesse Hall Martin, died in 1950.
Survivors include husband Ray T. Cannon; son Jesse T. Martin, China Grove; daughters Annie Iannotte Wetter, Betty J. McManus and Mary V. Hill, all of Kannapolis, Joyce L. Hannah, Charlotte, and Shelby J. Darnell, Raleigh; sisters Mary Lou Hawkins, Kannapolis, and Edna Bumgardner, Landis; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Born April 19, 1920, in Mecklenburg County, Mrs. Derry was a daughter of the late William Sloan and Mary Talbert Parker.
Her husband, Phillip Derry, died in 1985.

EAST SPENCER — Lawrence Van “Hatchet” Jones, 83, 512 Hall St., died Tuesday (April 24, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a month of serious illness.
Born June 26, 1917, in Clemson, S.C., Mr. Jones, a son of the late Eugene and Matilda Pickens Jones, was educated in the Clemson, S.C., schools. He retired from North Carolina Finishing Co. and was a member of Northeast Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
His wife, Annie Louise Harrison Jones, died in 1992.
Survivors include sons Visco Jones, Cleveland, Emory E. Jones, Winston-Salem, Donnie Jones, East Spencer, and Jermaine M. The funeral will be Thursday for Nell Kendrick Nance, 70, 1155 Forest Oaks Drive, who died Monday (April 23, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born May 21, 1930, in Granite Quarry, Mrs. Nance was a daughter of the late Everette Michael and Sadie Daniel Kendrick. She was educated in the Salisbury city schools and was a 1948 graduate of Boyden High School.
She retired in 1991 after 30 years from Hefner VA Medical Center. She was a member of Covenant Baptist Church and a former member of Second Presbyterian Church.
Her husband, Cecil Jerome Nance, died April 9, 1979.
Survivors include son Cecil J. “Jerry” Nance Jr., Salisbury, Mo.; daughter Robin N. Miles, Salisbury; sisters Mae Kendrick Courreges, Salisbury, and Doris Kendrick Shearer and Nancy Kendrick Ritchie, both of Spartanburg, S.C.; and four grandchildren.

KANNAPOLIS — Yates S. Payne, 81, 200 E. Second St., died Tuesday (April 24, 2001) at his home.
Born March 4, 1920, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Payne was a son of the late Zeb and Lillian Carpenter Payne. He retired after 35 years from Cannon Mills Co. No. 2 weave room.
A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of VFW Poston-Perkins Post 8989.

Robert Lee Propst
Robert Lee Propst, 68, Salisbury, died Tuesday (April 24, 2001) at his home after three weeks of serious illness.
Born Feb. 6, 1933, in Rowan County, Mr. Propst was a son of Ruth Shepherd Propst, Salisbury, and the late Charlie Lee Propst. He was educated in Dukeville schools and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was a welder for Salisbury Machinery and a member of Canaan Baptist Church, the VFW and Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by wife Betty Nichols Propst, whom he married June 2, 1957; son Paul “Tommy” Propst, China Grove; daughters Lydia Hilton, Salisbury, Donna Cavin, Gold Hill, and Martha Stubbs, China Grove; sister Nancy Bell, Salisbury; and five grandchildren.

Ronald Paul Ragland, 57, Pensacola, Fla., died Saturday (April 21, 2001) at his home.
Born Oct. 22, 1943, in Monroe, La., Mr. Ragland was a son of Doris M. Ragland, Woodleaf, and the late Leo Wilson Ragland. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was an electronics repairman for Donnie’s Satellite Electronics in Summerdale, Ala. He was a Catholic.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by brothers Kenneth Ragland, St. Pedro, Calif., and David Ragland, Richardson, Texas; and sister Anne Waller, Woodleaf.

Born Feb. 24, 1908, in Lincolnton, Mrs. Tutherow, a daughter of the late John Sydney and Sybilar Clark Reynolds, was educated in the Lincoln County schools. She retired from China Grove Cotton Mill and was a member of Landis Baptist Church and the Lois Baltes Sunday school class.
She was preceded in death by husband, Lloyd R. Tutherow; son, Paul E. Tutherow; and daughter Delores T. Faggart.

Born Jan. 12, 1928, in Iredell County, Mr. Woods was a son of the late J.P. and Virginia Morrison Lackey Woods. He was a former Salisbury resident and was employed as a custodian with Salisbury school system for many years.
