Creola McDowell
EAST SPENCER — The funeral will be Sunday for Creola Smyre McDowell, 70, 114 E. Jackson St., who died Thursday (April 19, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born Feb. 11, 1931, in Rowan County, Mrs. McDowell was the daughter of the late Henry and Hallie Marlin Smyre. A graduate of R.A. Clement High School, she worked at Rowan Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Mount Calvary Holy Church.
Survivors include daughter Brigitte Woodson of Salisbury; a grandson, Andre McDowell, who was reared in the home; sister Ruth Hughes of Queens, N.Y.; and another grandchild.

NEW LONDON — Mary Elizabeth Honeycutt Palmer, 86, 37989 Highway 52 N., died Thursday (April 19, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Doris Lee Parker
Doris Lee Chalk Parker, 73, 1714 N. Clay St., died Friday (April 20, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a serious illness of two weeks and declining health of several months.
Born Sept. 30, 1927, Mrs. Parker was the daughter of the late Wilks and Laura Rice Chalk. She was educated in the Adamsburg, S.C., public schools. She had retired from Brian Nursing Center in Salisbury.
Mrs. Parker was a longtime member of Southern City Tabernacle AME Zion Church in East Spencer, where she was president of the usher board for many years. She was a former Sunday school teacher, a member of the Kitchen Committee, Class No. 3 leader, a Parent Body Missionary, assistant secretary of the Evangelistic Committee and secretary of the Tuesday Noon Day Prayer Warriors.
Her husband, Quentin R. Parker, died in 1993. They married in 1945.
Survivors include sons Quentin L. Parker Jr., Salisbury, and Harold L. Parker, Fort Walton; daughters Delores Elaine Parker Hammond, Hampton., Va., Nancy P. Flythe, Millersville, Md., the Rev. Miriam P. Keller, Salisbury, and Judy P. Lee, Durham; stepdaughters Jackie Torrence, Salisbury, and Shelia Sullivan, Harrisburg, Pa.; brothers Melvin “Pete” Chalk, Salisbury, Walter “Billy” Chalk, Hampton, Va., Harvey L. Chalk, Huber Heights, Ohio, and Robert L. Rice, Orangeburg, S.C.; sisters Annie R. Keys and Kay Francis Ferrens, both of Salisbury; 25 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Clyde ‘Bear’ Pate
CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Sunday for Clyde Odell “Bear” Pate, 75, 113 E. Vance St., who died Thursday (April 19, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after seven months of declining health.
Born July 26, 1925, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Pate was the son of the late Robert Lee and Mary Pauline Pless Pate. Educated in the Cabarrus County schools, he had retired in 1983 from Pilot Freight Carriers in Kernersville. Mr. Pate was a member of Landis Baptist Church, where he was active in the Jim Childers Sunday School Class.
His first wife, Elise Trogden Pate, died Nov. 15, 1985, and a son, C.O. Pate Jr., died Sept. 9, 1986.
Survivors include his wife, Brenda Hill Bullins Pate, whom he married July 8, 1989; son Jesse Pate of China Grove; stepdaughter Wendy Fontenot of China Grove; brother Robert Pate of Rockwell; half brother Richard Pate of Florida; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one step-grandchild.
Services: 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Eddie Graham. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.
Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. today, at the funeral home. The remainder of the time, the family will be at the home on East Vance Street.

Thelma Cope Rogers
The funeral will be held Monday for Thelma Cope Rogers, 83, formerly of Forestdale Drive, Salisbury, who died Thursday (April 19, 2001) at the home of her daughter in Taylors, S.C., after two years of declining health.
Born Dec. 31, 1917, in Knoxville, Tenn., Mrs. Rogers was the daughter of the late Casper Jacob and Rebecca Pratt Cope. She graduated from East Spencer High School as valedictorian of her class. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include son Donald Steven Rogers of the Republic of Panama; daughter Linda R. Parks of Taylors, S.C.; sister Nell C. Barfield of Albany, Ga.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
