Genie Partee Avery

Genie Elizabeth Partee Avery, 88, formerly of 815 Partridge Ave., Chesapeake,Va., died Wednesday (April 18, 2001) at Spencer Health Care Center, Spencer, after a period of declining health.

Born Nov. 8, 1912, in Salisbury, Mrs. Avery was a daughter of the late Milas H. and Vernie Mae Cornelius Partee. She was educated in the Salisbury schools and graduated from J.C. Price High School and Booker T. Washington Night School, Norfolk, Va.

She retired from the Virginia schools. A former member of Church Street, now Trinity Presbyterian Church, she was previously affiliated with First United Presbyterian Church, Norfolk, Va. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Norfolk, Va., where she was an ordained deacon and a member of the choir.

Her husband, William Henry Avery, died Dec. 16, 1999.

Survivors include sisters Naomi Baker, Prairie View, Texas, and Lucille Partee Witherspoon, Salisbury.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Trinity Presbyterian Church, Salisbury, N.C., conducted by the Rev.George Hunter. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Barry Mark Barringer

The funeral will be Saturday for Barry Mark Barringer, 44, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (April 18, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a year of declining health.

Born Feb. 13, 1957, in Rowan County, Mr. Barringer , a son of Katherine Miller Barringer Owen, Salisbury, and the late Calvin Ray Barringer Jr., was a 1975 graduate of West Rowan High School. He received a degree in radiology from Rowan Technical Institute, now Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. He attended Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he was a pre-med student.

He was radiology supervisor with Presbyterian Orthopedic Hospital in Charlotte for 18 years. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and the choir.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Pamela Alexander Barringer, whom he married Aug. 7, 1980; stepson Sean Rigg, Greenville, S.C.; stepdaughter Stephanie Perry, Waterloo, S.C.; nephew reared in the home Justin Green; brothers Calvin Randall Barringer, Salisbury, and William Darrell Barringer, Lexington; and one grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Bethel Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. George Rhyne. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Frances Wood Boger

COOLEEMEE — Frances Wood Boger, 87, Center Street, died Thursday (April 19, 2001) at her home.

Born Nov. 16, 1913, in Davie County, Mrs. Boger was a daughter of the late Walter and Alice Leanore Linberry Wood. Formerly employed as a weaver by Erwin Mills, she was a member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church.

Her husband, Claudie Everett Boger, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Woody H. Boger, Cooleemee; daughter Claudette Smitherman, Cooleemee; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside,2 p.m. Sunday, Legion Memorial Park Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Steve Hedgecock.

Visitation: None.

Ethel Mae Cruse Cline

Ethel Mae Cruse Cline, 88, Salisbury, died Thursday (April 19, 2001) at her home after a period of declining health.

Born Oct. 30, 1912, in Rowan County, Mrs. Cline, a daughter of the late John Edward and Ida Jane Ritchie Cruse, attended Mulberry School and Salisbury High School.

She worked at North Carolina Finishing Co. and Granite Quarry School cafeteria.

A lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, she was superintendent of the kindergarten Sunday school class, over the adult department and a member of Hanna Lingle Circle, St. Paul’s Friendship Club and the altar guild. She recently served on the homework committee and volunteered at Salisbury Lutheran Home.

Her husband, William Allison Cline Jr., preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons William Allison Cline III and Wayne Meredith Cline, both of Salisbury; daughter Jane Cline Allen, Rockwell; sister Fay Cruse Roseman,Salisbury; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. William Ketchie, senior pastor. Burial, family plot in church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home and 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the church fellowship hall.

Jessie C. Dover Jr.

ALBEMARLE — Jessie C. Dover Jr., 63, 30624 Cane Drive, died Thursday (April 19, 2001) at his home.

Born Oct. 16, 1937, in Oglethorpe County, Ga., Mr. Dover was a son of Jessie Claude and Mary Brooks Dover, Landis. He served in the U.S. Air Force. A retired auto parts salesman, he was employed by Ritchie Auto Parts. He was a member of Grace (Lower Stone)United Church of Christ, Rockwell.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Bernice Burris Dover; daughters Laura McDaniel and Wendy Safrit, both of Salisbury; stepsons Phil and Rick Burris, both of Albemarle; brother Calvin Dover, China Grove; sisters Cherry Lewis, Landis, and Jan Sides, Concord; and 10 grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Albemarle Pentecostal Holiness Church, conducted by the Rev. Ralph Shelton. Burial, West Lawn Cemetery, China Grove; military rites by Stanly County DAV.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home on Cane Drive.

Corinna W. Kearns

SPENCER — Corinna Walton Kearns, 87, Spencer, died Thursday (April 19, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after three years of declining health and a week of serious illness.

Born Nov. 9, 1913, in Rowan County, Mrs. Kearns, a daughter of the late Adam Lee and Allie Coppley Walton, was educated in the Rowan County schools.

A seamstress, she retired from Dolly Madison Industries.She was earlier employed by Carter Brothers Furniture, Salisbury.

She was a lifelong member of Oakdale Baptist Church, where she taught the primary Sunday school class for over 40 years. She was also a member of the Annie Armstrong Circle.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Schwartz Medinger, and her second husband, Frank Alton Kearns.

Survivors include sons Barry Medinger, Salisbury, Grey Medinger, Clayton, and Neal Medinger, Moncks Corner, S.C.; daughter Sylvia Spivey, Gastonia; stepson Buddy Kearns, Florida; stepdaughters Nancy Starnes, Smithfield,Va., and Annie Starnes, Hampton, Va.; brothers Jake Walton, Spencer, and Jimmy Walton, Chesapeake, Va.; sister Elsie Brown, Salisbury, and Naomi Lingle, Spencer; 20 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Oakdale Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Conred F. “Buddy” Cornelius and the Rev. Mark Walton. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home, Salisbury. At other times the family will be at the home of son Barry Medinger, Salisbury.

Willie M. Kelley

KANNAPOLIS — Willie Mae Montgomery Kelley, 78, 2505 Linda Ave., died Thursday (April 19, 2001) at his home after five months of serious illness.

Born Sept. 11, 1922, in Lancaster, S.C., Mr. Kelley, a son of the late Phillips Montgomery and Addie (McCardell) McCardell, was educated in the Lancaster, S.C., schools. She worked at Fieldcrest Cannon and was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church.

Her husband, Robert Kelley, died Feb. 13, 2000. A son, James Montgomery, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Robert Vinson Kelley, Kannapolis; daughter Mary Glaspy, Kannapolis; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Randy Guy Long

The funeral will be Saturday for Randy Guy Long, 39, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (April 18, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born April 19, 1961, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Long was a son of Helen Montieth Nichols, Salisbury, and Bobby Guy Long, Gold Hill. He was educated in the Rowan County schools and was a Baptist. He worked as a residential and commercial roofer.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include son Randy Guy Long Jr., Salisbury; daughters Ashley and Heather Long, both of Salisbury; brothers Tommy and Larry Long, both of Salisbury; and sisters Loretta Chamberlin and Becky Long, both of Salisbury.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Powles Funeral Home Chapel, Rockwell, conducted by the Rev. Barry Kemp, pastor, Liberty Baptist Church, China Grove. Burial, Coldwater Baptist Church cemetery, Concord.

Creola McDowell, 70, 114 E. Jackson, died Thursday (April 19, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

CHINA GROVE — Clyde Odell Pate, 75, 113 E. Vance St., died Thursday (April 19, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Howard Hancel Raper

KANNAPOLIS — Howard Hancel Raper, 82, 207 Blackwelder St., died Wednesday (April 18, 2001) at his home.

Born April 6, 1919, in Cherokee County, Mr. Raper was a son of the late Marshall and Adenia Beaver Raper. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and attended Blackwelder Park Baptist Church. He retired from Cannon Mills plant 1 No. 1 weave room.

Survivors include wife Hazel Steele Raper; children Darlene Smothers, Janice Eberhart, Shirley Looney, David and Danny Raper, all of Kannapolis, and Gary Raper, China Grove; brother Horace “Chuck” and Ronia Raper, both of Kannapolis; sisters Bonnie Noble, LaBell, Fla., and Hazel Smith and Charlene Scott, both of Kannapolis; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one step-grandson.

Services: 8:30 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Stan Welch, pastor, Blackwelder Park Baptist Church. Graveside, 10 a.m. Saturday, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Thelma Cope Rogers, 83, Forestdale Drive, died Thursday (April 19, 2001) in Greenville, S.C.
